Madden 12 News Post

IGN has posted a preview for Franchise Mode in Madden NFL 12.

Quote:
"'Any Given Sunday' isn't just the title of a bad football movie; it's an old adage that you never know what you're going to get when players step out on the field. Anything can happen. Your star QB could sling it five yards past every receiver. Your shaky rookie cornerback might come up clutch with a game-changing interception. Over the course of weeks and seasons, players are defined by their tendencies and begin assuming roles in their teams.

Madden NFL 12 developer Tiburon recognizes this and has made it part of the core upgrade to Franchise mode. It's true, Madden has disappointed with its Franchise mode the past few years, but that looks to be changing this year. The amount of improvements is staggering, but the most significant are the additions of dynamic player performance and player roles."

IGN will be releasing a follow-up blog on Monday, May 16th going more in depth about the changes to Franchise Mode.

Wow, this is a great addition. It's really going to change how I sign free agents and draft rookies...

Dynamic player performance and roles sound very cool, but I hope the effects aren't overdone. For example, Peterson, while "fumble prone" according to the article, has fumbled 21 times in 61 career games, or once every 3 games. I worry that this will be much more often in Madden.

EDIT: The lowest ratio of attempts to fumbles last year was Mike Goodson, who fumbled once every 25 carries. That should be the extreme case for being fumble-prone. Most of the other high-fumble rbs fumbled once every 35-40 attempts.

Sounds pretty bad ***!

Looks like Madden has that portrait blending stuff from NFL 2K5 for Rookie portraits, maybe? I have no earthly idea who "Carter Wilson" and "Deangelo Washington" are, otherwise.

Yeah, but the role can be changed from season to season. So if he didnt fumble that much he should get another role.

Good stuff. Finally franchise gets some spice.

Are these the exact same player roles from the previous gen? I didn't spend much time in franchise on the PS2, but I remember reading countless threads on them and I seem to recall all of these roles. Regardless, I'm glad they're back.

Hopefully these player roles are unlimited unlike the NBA 2k series. I don't want to roll with a 32-team franchise and I can't set player roles because one or two teams are incompetent enough to have limited player roles.

Except that if the effect is overdone it will create a snowball effect. For example, maybe a guy like Peterson fumbles in real life once every 63 touches (total touches/fumbles), but in Madden that number jumps to once every 31.5 touches (because his role is to be fumble-prone). Now you have a situation where he fumbles maybe once per game, furthering his fumble-prone status and lowering his fumble rating over the course of the next season. Now maybe he fumbles once every 25 touches. The next season then becomes worse, and so on.

If they implement this and it is as powerful as some of the other player enhancements they've done in the past, the cover-up button needs to be enough to limit fumbles, so that it's not just random dicerolls that have worse and worse odds as the user moves through franchise.

Looks like we aren't getting prospects walking up to the podium to shake Goodell's hand. Oh well, still looks pretty cool...

Does that mean if I draft Andrew Luck or LaMichael James (downloaded class) they may have a picture completely different that their appearence?!?!

There you go. EA finally got me. I have to say that I'm PUMPED.

I, for one, am glad player roles are back. I think it was a big part of what made last gen Madden franchise so fun, exciting, fresh and dynamic for multiple seasons. I too hope that certain roles aren't over-exaggerated so as to make players perform ridiculous things, but I don't think that will be the case. I'm very excited right now for this game.

A lot of them appear the same, but I think Playoff Performer is new.

I'm excited for the player roles and it looks like they'll have a dynamic effect on franchise mode, but looking at the screen shots draft presentation hasn't been improved and the new free agency bidding system has me worried that people who like to control all 32 teams won't be able to...

I think its only for Madden generated classes.

Just re-read the article (you know it takes a couple times to digest the info). Franchise sets up to be sweet.

I really like that hot/cold streaks reset after a max of 3 weeks. That's very reasonable.

The roles are going to finally bring franchise mode back to life. Now I'll be able to identify the make up of a team without perusing through the depth chart.

"Tom Brady is a playoff performer. He's good in the regular season, but something kicks in during the playoffs that boost his ability to win games. Mark Brunell has become a mentor. His role is to support the development of Jets QB Mark Sanchez. Having Brunell as mentor has Sanchez learning and improving at a faster rate. Adrian Peterson is fumble prone. It's in his head now. In big moments, he's more likely to cough up the rock. Sadly, that's his role right now on the Vikings. "

This paragraph just sold the game to me. This is pretty huge.

Hopefully with the new players roles effecting the computer controlled teams in a positive way towards signing free agents, and drafting towards team needs means users wont have to control all 32 teams

# 20 blklightning @ 05/13/11 04:26 PM
i think this stuff should be under the hood. i don't need a label to tell me if someone is fumble prone when i can just watch their performance or check their stats. if someone is future starting qb material, i'd rather read that in a headline or in a scouting report rather than a label. so while i like the idea, i'm not a fan of its vanilla execution.
