IGN has posted a preview for Franchise Mode in Madden NFL 12.

"'Any Given Sunday' isn't just the title of a bad football movie; it's an old adage that you never know what you're going to get when players step out on the field. Anything can happen. Your star QB could sling it five yards past every receiver. Your shaky rookie cornerback might come up clutch with a game-changing interception. Over the course of weeks and seasons, players are defined by their tendencies and begin assuming roles in their teams.
Madden NFL 12 developer Tiburon recognizes this and has made it part of the core upgrade to Franchise mode. It's true, Madden has disappointed with its Franchise mode the past few years, but that looks to be changing this year. The amount of improvements is staggering, but the most significant are the additions of dynamic player performance and player roles."
IGN will be releasing a follow-up blog on Monday, May 16th going more in depth about the changes to Franchise Mode.
Im curious to find out how you receive an "underachiever" role. It says 20+ roles. I wonder what some other roles will be? Could be "1st round bust", "Diamond in the rough". I just hope there isnt a big icon underneath the players feet on the field. Leave the player roles on the menu's please.
Ah, sweet, roles. Franchise is finally getting back to where it was, plus some! I love the ideas behind consistency, maturing, etc. Finally, there's a reason to play a vet over a rookie beyond mere attributes.

1 of the IGN screens had Alex Smith and Ted Ginn labelled as underachievers, so I'm guessing its for failed 1st and 2nd round picks.

In past gen, I believe it was about not living up to your ratings. Same for a "bust" role. If a 1st round player wasn't starting within a certain amount of time, they were considered a bust. So I'd imagine if a 90 OVR running back only averages 2.5 ypc, they're an "underachiever."

There's probably an "overachiever" to go with that. If I had to bet, an underachiever would be a 90 OVR playing like a 75 OVR, and an overachiever would be a 75 OVR playing like a 90 OVR.
Franchise is looking really good right now, I really like the fact now that it seems rookie QB's can be developed without having to play them right away. Going to be fun playing through NCAA Dynasty and picking up a QB you recruited and took your program to a new level, then being able to develop him and continue his legacy!
It is going to suck when online franchise will continue to be overlooked...
I know I have an unpopular opinion, but I think if we look somewhat objectively, the last 6-7 years have been geared more towards the online gamer.
I'm not suggesting that they have ignored online franchise -- more news is certainly coming. But I have no sympathy for folks asking "what about online" when offliners have gotten the shaft ALL of this generation.

A part of me hopes that they don't disclose the details behind players roles as far as the amount of ratings boosts, what specifically makes a QB a franchise QB, etc.
I really hope there's some difference between a player in a 3-4 and a player in a 4-3, no news so far. What I mean by that is in free agency if there's players that fit the 3-4 scheme should be pursued by teams that play that scheme and so on.
So i wonder if every player in the game will have a role, or just the players that actually see the field.
If every player doesnt have a role they could eventually grab one.
No and the reason I say this is because the IGN dude made mention to brunell being a "mentor" player for sanchez so i would assume the mentor role affects the awareness or something else rating wise for the players around them...much like the mentor rating in allpro2k football.
Adrian Peterson is fumble prone. It's in his head now. In big moments, he's more likely to cough up the rock. Sadly, that's his role right now on the Vikings. (EA hasn't revealed if Peterson has the Fumble Prone role; if not, we should riot.)

One of the screens at IGN shows the Giants roster and only a few players (Eli Manning, Keith Bulluck, Umenyiora, Chris Snee, Bradshaw) have player roles so I'd assume they are limited.
See:
The Jets and Niners have quite a bit more players with roles, though, which is a little odd.
