NBA Elite 11 News Post

NBA ELITE 11 is back with the first of two gameplay videos featuring 5 on 5 action. This video is a user vs. user matchup with NBA ELITE Gameplay Producer Novell Thomas taking on NBA Community Manager Yaw Obiri-Yeboah (also known as blackflash83 on the forums) . The game is being played on a Pre-final build with some tuning left to do but it provides a good representation of how the game will play once you developed your skills with the new Hands-On control.

Be sure to check out some of the quick plays being called during half court offensive sequences (press X on the 360 to begin a quick play or the Square button on PS3) and the importance of playing the passing lanes as balls can get deflected. You have complete control this year in NBA ELITE 11.

^^ I read a couple pages before watching the video and I don't get this sentiment. Breen sounds just like Breen, maybe a toned down version of what he gives you at a real game. Same with Van Gundy. I thought Jackson was best at infusing his personality into his lines.

Couple more things I noticed:

Pros
+ Switching hands on the RS. It looks fairly important, not just for ball security or driving, but passing as well. Notice the users making sure to switch the ball to the hand closest to their intended recipient when running plays.
+ The physics at work when posting up, post game in general.
+ Rotation AI
+ post game in general (Gallinari using Maggette down there, I look forward to abusing mismatches in the paint in this game)
+ Freedom to choose a right handed layup lets Jennings evade the help after the pumpfake.
+ A legitimate crossover beating a defender, something I don't feel has ever been done well in a game
+ Very good entry pass animation and jumper from Gallinari (2:34) following good defense with the switch on the PnR forcing the mismatch with Redd on Gallo.
+ Live Ball = Deflections
+ Being able to choose to contest a shot with right or left hand. At 2:12, Maggette gives Gallo a pumpfake and the user contests with his left hand, which allows him to still cutoff baseline and force Maggette to give up the ball. CPU teammate Amare in position to help in the even Maggette had beaten him baseline is also a +.
+Play that starts at 4:06, Jennings passes the ball, sets a screen for Redd, then goes down low and screens Gallinari to free Maggette. This time Gallinari challenges with his right, Maggette takes the open lane and abuses the rim. Not a fan of the dunk type in that situation, but it isn't ridiculous and the animation looks nice.

Cons:
- Obviously the lack of fouls
- Salmon's bs Jumper animation
- Questionable rebounding animations
- A "generic" quality to the ballhandling, from watching Danilo & Amare handle the ball. Maybe the difference is in responsiveness and success rate, but the quickness seems to be there regardless. The demo will shine light on this.
- Little variation on rim interaction for made shots, all swish, no rim ins or outs or backrims or frontrims, etc.
- Salmons gaining air due to a collision. The desired result is there, but it's ugly. Like the no-call on that animation though.
- I like that physics lets you get physical with the ballhandler and acknowledges your presence (big improvement on 10) but you have to account for that. 3:40 is a foul and should be called as such.
- At 4:30, i'm assuming Amare wanted to hit Walker under the basket for an above the rim finish. That it went in Gallinari's direction makes me wonder about the accuracy of RT passing for quick hits.

? - Walker comes close to going out at 2:30. I think the line is out, and if so I hope the game calls you for going out like that. If it's lenient due to sliding, tighten up the sliding.
? - Looks like heavy thumbs on the sticks @ 3:47 causes Bogut to break his own ankles. Don't think I like.
? - Like the user responsiveness to try and deflect the pass at 4:06. Also like the no-look animation, but not in that context lol.

Next year, as far as total control goes, I'd like to see Elite give you some as far as dunks go. I have no suggestions for implementation, but the basketball logic that permeates the game with these controls is kind of tossed to wolves when dunking. The choice is purely yes/no. Of course, they need to add a bunch of different kinds of dunks as well.

I'm looking forward to tomorrow's video, hopefully earlier. Interested to see the LT defense slide in action on the perimeter and post, as well as the take charge button. I'm also interested to see how block/charge logic was tuned and how physics works there.

Another small little feature EA got right this year is head tracking. Every player has an eye on the ball especially from a standstill so they look a little more engaged now on defense.

Also check out the new off ball animations for defenders in the paint (start at 2:38 or 4:00). Guys putting there hands up to prevent passes from getting. Or Stoudamire turning his body aware that Jennings just hop stepped pass his man.

These little contextual animations were nowhere to be found in Live 10. Also on that same possesion just look at the way the players rotate and help. Looked great to me even though the animations weren't perfect I liked how aware they were on D.

Even the guys on the perimeter are moving better (last possesion 4:55). Watch Bogut as he approaches to defend the pick and roll. Last year he wouldn't have been running straight up the whole way. Now he's got hands in position to try and deflect a pass into the post (even if he was facing the wrong way lol!)

Or Salmons on the same play staying with Walker on defense, he kept his head on a swivel making sure he sees ball and man. While at the same time keeping his body in a position to make a play if a pass went his way.

Its also nice to see that animation is not apart of a two player package its all contextual same with the post guys.

Last year they looked and acted so helpless on defense. I'm sure these things aren't much to guys who didn't play Live last year but I'm lovin it.

I dont think anyone from the knicks or bucks have a special pregame routine but will the players like kobe, lebron. d-wade, and d-12 still have theirs?

I wish they would show something else for the teams and players that dont have a pregame routine besides them standing on one spot and dribbling the ball between their legs or laying the ball up.

This is very worrying! If this is not a finished product I would be shocked! Absolutely horrid gameplay. NBA Jam is projecting to be more influential to sales than Elite is on its own merits, and EA knows it! This is not a quality product.

i have gamefly, so i think ill rent it and try it out. But man 60 bucks, shld be 40 instead. its to robotic they need to stick to one formula, and stay with that for awhile.

I loved the in and out move jennings did at the 2:04 mark but to bad felton stayed in front of him and jennings couldnt go anywhere.

Thats what i like about this game. On offense you have the ability to get past the defender but on defense you have the tools to stay in front of your man. And that goes back to removing the canned animations.

Mark my words that will be what makes this game for the people that like it

This just is not a 'Realistic NBA Basketball Game'.

Great find, I wonder if you have that same control on defense for in air collisions too?

Not too bad looking forward to the demo to see it with my own eyes and my own way of playing.

Wow, it almost seem that neither guy wanted to play defense in the beginning. On that Salmon shot "Blue" switched to the closet man and could attempted to close out but for some reason he switched off of him. And the same goes for the Jennings lay-up around the 1:32 mark. Jennings got by his man, "Blue" switched to Stoudamire who was in the lane alone, who could have close out out or protect the basket, but he decided to switch off of him and a second later switch back only too late to doing anything about the lay-up. I just don't think these guys did the game justice by playing "half-on" "half-off" defense.

I think both developers should just release A.I. vs A.I. in broadcast camera and let us judge simulation for ourselves. I think we have enough gameplay from users, where we know how the players are going to react under our control. Now I'm more interested in seeing a more realistic and simulation playing A.I.

Jennings is a speed demon. Maybe it was on purpose, but since the game doesn't have turbo, I have a magnifying glass on fast breaks. Jennings could have turned that 2nd to last possession into something out of nothing (despite no numbers).

I don't get saying the game isn't a realistic NBA game. It looks to me like it still matters who you are using and what you do with them. The onus is just on you a bit more in Elite.

It looked too deliberate. There were times when the one user could have easily drove to the basket or scored and they passed the ball around instead trying to make the game look good. You can clearly see they wanted to highlight a few things like the dribble moves and this was a much better video to watch than those other ones. But it felt too much like a promotional video trying to hide some flaws.

Interesting net physics...

# 216 carnalnirvana @ 09/02/10 08:11 AM
ok this was stale.....

any display of gameplay should have a human vs AI. human vs human especially 2 guys trying to sell a product will be fake. this seemed fake

about the game itself, its so generic i cant even tell the difference between the players unless i see or hear their names.

once again every guard is either a slower or taller version of each other, same handle, same skills at the hoop....

running plays still seem robotic, if i bump a guy trying to run off a screen it would be nice for him to a an escape option say maybe go backdoor since my team has changed our focus, not continue the original play where i can get the easy steal because i know where the play is going to finish..

You will know when a game is a real sim game when cheesers cant win at it via cheesing. cheesers now dont have to find some super glitch all they have to do is abuse some unrealistic portion of the game and wa-la. none of these games are 100% on target.

I want it all personally. but i will sacrafice look for gameplay for one year knowing if the game play is 75% there in their first year. it will be 90% there the second year using RTP and tighting up the graphics.

people are complaing about a look more so then they are the RTP. but they keep saying they dont see any RTP. you cant really see it. you FEEL it with the sticks. thats why they keep saying this. but people act as if they didn't read those threads from the devs or something.
and you can say that elite wont be a cheeser game????? take a look at those videos and realize that elite 11 will be a killer cheeser game...... the videos all showed that.

i don't see any defense that you are talking about.... the game seems like the users are trying their hardest to make this look like a sim experience, jennign crossing over on felton pretty much no defense their, the fast break jennings had a free layup instead the user stopped and set up a play, y???? just tooo many things that i can't over look, so my decision is about 97.9% made up, i leave it to the demo to for 2.1% TO CONVINCE ME, this game looks like a cheesers dream!!!!!

there seems to be some suction in the video, it seem really fast but seems to be there and that in air collision looks soooooo bad...........sigh
