We have just posted our hands-on NCAA Football 11 preview. Find out what Christian McLeod has to say about the game, a few months before release.
Quote:
"The NCAA series used to be my favorite sports franchise. I use the past tense because ever since the series came to current-gen consoles the gameplay quality and presentation values have taken steps backwards, culminating in the extremely disappointing NCAA Football 10.
So my mission was clear at this preview event in New York: track down those responsible for the development of the series, ask them the tough questions that the OS faithful expect and see just what was so special about this year's version of the game, especially after years of disappointment.
But before I go any further, I wanted to bring up one thing. In today’s world of yearly sports releases of varying quality, it is quite easy to scapegoat a developer or producer, placing the blame on those particular individuals for the quality of their aforementioned game. Our forum users here at OS have a somewhat notorious reputation for holding development teams to somewhat impossible standards at times -- just look at the 180-degree turn in excitement for NCAA 11 after the initial "gameplay" video was posted on site."
Co-sign. It doesn't take much to get over on the OS sheep year after year. There will have to be something drastically different in either NCAA or Madden for me to even think about buying this year.
I actually liked Madden this year. Which is why I'm hopeful for this year. But reading OS once again saying how much the game improved is useless.
Hearing they slowed down the gameplay is encouraging.
April: OS says this years game is really great.
June: OS says the NCAA team really stepped it up this year.
July: OS gives it a good review. It comes out everyone hates it.
End of July: After everyone says it sucks, OS does a 180 on the forums and wonders what happened, that this is not the game they played.
Next April: OS says, sure LAST YEARS sucked butman this years game is really great.
Repeat.
To be fair, those getting their hands on the game are not playing the final build so they in turn can only cast an eye over whats in front of them and as to what the future promises by EA developers lurking at the time. I don't think a website putting it's name out there each and every time they get a hands on preview are going to be hyping up a game just for the heck of it. That's not good business. That detracts from their integrity in an industy where integrity is of the upmost importance (especially when giving honest feedback to would-be consumers) in my opinon.
Should we expect EA developers (in this example) to be suggesting to those fortunate to be previewing the game "You know what, you're going to be a little disappointed. We missed the mark this year". No. It's not happening.
I read somewhere on this website/forum whereby one said, "football gamers are the hardest to please" - something along those lines. The poster ain't far off the mark in my opinion. Cut those attempting to do their job some slack and cast judgment (if you have to) when the final build is released. A review of the game as opposed to the preview, is where you should be judging a site like this.

Maybe my memory's failing me, but last year OS wasn't nearly as excited. Every one was complaining about how gameplay was the same and of course the addition Season Showdown.
Oh man... I'm dying to play this. So much that he's said is making me so impatient. Sounds like there's a big feature concerning jerseys and equipment and another concerning presentation. Can't wait. You can say I'm officially hyped.

Last year was a bad year for NCAA. I was always bashing the dev team because their decisions. There wasn't a gameplay blog outside of the pocket blog if I remember correctly. Then they had a blog for Bowl endzones, field goal socks, and 3 blogs for season showdown. Last year everyone was hyping Madden 10 and bashing NCAA 10. This year I am anxious to see more of NCAA 11 and I don't really care much for Madden 11 because it will most likely match NCAA 11.
I'm hoping the Jersey news is throwbacks and the nike uni's...and existing team edit in TB. that would be great.
One of the reviews mentioned that EA had added some throwbacks. The pointed out Oregons unis against Oregon State... I hope they added a lot of throwbacks. And really hope that they added uniform and helmet templates to TB.
Looks promising from what I've read. Will shall see in two months, as a scouting assistant I watch tons of game film and am just hard to please but that is why this site is so great, there are a bunch of people like me advocating for all sports games. Everything will come out in the wash in July can't wait

This is true. OS was VERY unreceptive to NCAA 10's info and rightfully so. Season Showdown got the most rejection. NCAA 10 was just a blown season.
I'm very pumped for this one, additions I've heard so far sound great! I haven't heard anything yet about improvements to the sound. That for me has been one of the biggest disappointments for me. It just hasn't sounded like an authentic gameday setting imho.

Yeah, I agree, when I said OS I meant actual OS reviewers that get to play it before the rest of the OS community.
Momentum works, no more robo qb, no more suction blocking, and running animations are better. Is is possible that all these things are fixed? The way this review made me feel is that this will be the best football game on next gen. Throw in ESPN presentation and damn. It's hard not to be skeptical, this review is going to generate so much hype. Please if anything is actually fixed let it be OLine DLine interaction.
I actually read another preview somewhere else (gamespot??) that said there was still suction blocking. I really find it hard to believe EA did away with that because it's crucial to how the game works so that the game doesn't become defensive oriented (which EA does not want).
Maybe i'm just being a negative nelly here but no suction blocking? I find it impossible to believe until I play it. No matter who says it or how many people say it in previews.
Enjoy the Kool Aid gents, I am not drinking it any longer. If EA 'wows' me with a great game, then I promise to return to slobber all over it and give the dev-team and EA marketing some big wet e-love....but until then, consider me completely unmoved by the hype train...seen this pattern all too often in the last 5 years to believe it even a little bit.
Good for you on making your decision, but why does it even matter to you how other's view this stuff? If people like it, they are going to like it, but theirs honestly no reason for posts like that. If you don't like it, say so and move on till they impress you or don't impress whichever it be. Just don't get yourself worked up about other's thouh. No point to it.

I see your point but I see where he's coming from too. I think what he may be saying, and what I *am* saying, is that if people quit letting themselves get so ridiculously hyped up then maybe when the game came out they'd not have sky-high expectations and then be able to just enjoy it more each year.
I am most certainly looking forward to getting this game, I will try to get it early as well, like I do every year. But I'm expecting a minimal improvement, a realistic expectation I believe. Therefor I doubt I'll be disappointed. But so many folks build this up so high that the game will always disappoint them.
Don't let EA or anyone on this forum set your expectations so high that the game will only disappoint!!

I agree with you ODogg, I feel the same exact way. Honestly if they fixed the 90 degree turning I was gong to be happy this year. And I'd probably say the same thing I said to him about the people who get extremly hyped then continue to try to yell at the people who aren't impressed. I can think of one such person who deos that off the top of my head, but I won't name names. His post just seems to me like a copycat post of what crimsontide said in the original gameplay vid thread and I just don't believe its necessary to see it everywhere we go in the forums. It gets kind of annoying.
I hope you accidentally worded that wrong.... I respect people wanting 3d grass, new equipment, but bowl patches over uniforms and authentic entrances just puzzles me.
