Madden NFL 11 News Post

IGN has posted the first Madden NFL 11 screenshots, as well as the first details on the game.

Quote:
"Not only will players recognize the boundaries of the field, but Cummings also said that they'd be fully aware of the location of first down markers. "We have specifically tuned and added support to make it so receivers wait for the ball on a curl and have awareness for the first down. Also, receivers will now be working to catch the ball in stride on crossing routes so they don't end up slowing down or losing yardage," said Cummings. He later conceded that receivers will occasionally lose yardage if it means coming back to the ball and avoiding an interception. I, for one, can live with that.

But what about defense? It seems with all this newfound firepower for the offense, the defensive guys might have fallen by the wayside. Cummings assured us that wasn't the case, saying, "We never want to make it so the offense is too powerful, so we have really focused on giving the defenders the ability to go up and also knock the ball out in mid-air. We've added all new animations for mid-air collisions so defenders have an even better ability to get up with a receiver and fight for the ball. With recent changes, players will definitely play the ball more aggressively, but the elite guys are the ones who are going to be able to hang on to it." So while you'll see wide receivers like Larry Fitzgerald going up in traffic and coming down with an astounding grab, there's certainly the opportunity for defenders like Ed Reed to make you sorry you ever tried working the ball into the middle of the field."

Patches/Upddates should be for minor cosmetic issues and roster changes not essential core gameplay function/issues. Gameplay should be PRIORITY #1!
110% agreed, Hopefully Ian can go in depth about this horrible animation because everyone is tires of seeing it. Loose the "faith catch" and the "piggy back swat and tackle" animations please.

I am sure that Ian is expected to produce a product that INCREASES sales year-over-year and that alone creates an enormous amount of inertia that is tough to overcome in any corporate setting (for the youngsters on this forum, pray you never have to learn the inner working of a large conglomerate/corporation like EA). I feel badly for him because it really is the ultimate no-win scenario. Change too much and alienate the "base" of customers and casual game buyers who routinely buy Madden every year. Change too little and you piss off the hard core crowd who always buys the game and always complains about its lack of depth and changes by October 1st each year. Its like trying to make porridge for Goldie-locks without any idea of what she would define as "just right".

On the other hand, a lot of the quotes are starting to sound canned and repeated year after year. This has been true for a long time, but it becomes jarringly so when it is the same person making the annual statements and promising the same fixes as the previous 2 games. Ian is in year 3 of a job that really should not have more than a 2-year public shelf-life.

David Ortiz suffered from many personal attacks and some that were partially justified, but the visceral hate he engendered at the end of his tenure was IMO due to staying on too long in a stagnant franchise.

Madden is going to be Madden. There will be a few things done better, a few things left 100% the same from games as old as 2006 and a few things promised that don't "get into the game though we REALLY wanted that one this year". This is all part of the annual cycle, nearly as predictable as spring thunderstorms and summer sun.

A brief recap:

2006 --> crap game, should have been killed and did so much harm to the series in terms of not meeting even basic expectations that it truly has poisoned the well for the entire series on current gen hardware...

2007 --> better than 2006, but still FAR short of "next-gen" expectations. EA got some credit for making the game playable initially, but glitches came in torrents and the game was generally a big disappointment on the 360 and in its PS3 debut.

2008 --> still progressing over 2006 and 2007, but not at a pace that satisfied many of the game's hardcore fans...worth noting - the 2006 game was done on a very compressed timeline to coincide with the release of the XB360 (November 2005) and THAT decision led to a similar compressed timeline on 2007 (released August 2006). Madden 2008 was truly the first game on this generation to get a full 12 months in development - from September 2006 to August 2007.

2009 --> anger was already boiling over in the fan base for not having a "classic" Madden to play on the PS3 and XB360. In the previous generations, by the 4th title - say Madden NFL 2004 on PS2 or Madden NFL '94 on PS1 - Madden had hit new series highs and won a ton of approval. To date that is still missing this time around...

2010 --> a truly decent Madden in many, many respects; but by this time the "Hate-Madden-is-cool" bandwagon was at full speed and circling the building with sign-waving zealots.

The common thread though all of these releases has been a carefully controlled media circus that starts in the spring and hits a peak with the release of NCAA in July and 4 weeks later culminates in the "new" Madden. Between now and then, about 5,000 times people will say "its still early...wait until 'x,y,z' " and another 5,000 retorts will say "yeah, but what about 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 or 2010?" The long and the short of it is that if you expect too much change in any single Madden then you simply have not been paying attention to the Madden Cycle very well or you are still new to the series.

Madden 11 will satisfy some and disappoint others, but what personally disappoints me is that Backbreaker shows a real attempt to change the perspective of how we play video football and introduces Euphoria-based unique tackles (in place of canned animations) and the only talk out of Orlando is about superficial and following the usual script. It will be enough to trounce Backbreaker in sales for certain, but not in originality and that counts for a lot.

Another year and another Madden that gets incrementally better when most people want something revolutionary every 12 months.
Well said!!!! Bravo!!!!! You captured the essesnce of what has been going on these past 4-5 years and why people feel the way they do about Madden whether pro Madden or not. Ian Cummings does have a job I honestly do admit that, but he knew what he was getting into when he took the job as Lead Designer.

Just like anyone else, I like the blogs and bits of information, but the above comments frustrate me. No offense at all, but if you are saying they said something would exist in last year's game and then didn't, why would you be excited about another promise in this year's game?

I'm sure it will look nice, but what needs to be addressed is how the AI pays no attention to the possibility of yards after a catch. Most of the time the AI catches the ball close to the sidelines and then is pulled out of bounds. Hopefully this is fixed.

They are still running that same receiver/DB fight for the ball as last year? They need to get some new running animations in this game cause it is really getting old.

Panther -- ALL of your posts reek of glass-half-fullness LOL. How about some balance? Womalee is correct; the NCAA screenshots do look better. I don't think that'll be indicative of what we see in July & August, but as far as screenshots, he's right.

so after sleeping on it the information was interesting. what i hope is when the recievers goes after the ball he doesn't run back five yards. also will this enable us to direct the ball more so you can throw the ball to the ground and reciever will scoop it. or on fade your ball will have an arc for the player to go up and get it. also maybe this debug tool will count awareness in it also so not all recievers will be able to make the sideline catch.

I had to do the same actually ...in order for me to appreciate them placing some focus on this area. Throwing to the sidelines has been almost been non-existent b/c the AI is too dumb. Hopefully this shores this up, and will impact the 2 minute drill.

And Madden 10's screens looked really really good last year.

I liked what Ian had to say. I just hope they come through on their promises this year. In Madden 10, there still is no noticeable variation in player run take-offs. They just seem to go from 0 to full speed in a nanosecond.

I wish I could be as excited for Madden 11 as others are here, but I've been burned for the past five years. This year, I will not be buying Madden 11 off the shelf. I will wait for a used copy. They usually start rolling in about 2 or 3 days later.

Yooo.. I was hype as hell to log onto OS to see "Madden 11 Screenshots and first details"..... Until I viewed the pics and said "UGHH WTF"!

First off I will buy the game Day 1 so there is no arguing with that.

Second...Why show the same wack animation that was in Madden 08-10 "Rocket tackle". Don't give me that "Ugh the defender is playing the ball more aggressively this year". THAT SAME ANIMATION WAS IN MADDEN 08-10!!!! If you re-worked a certain aspect of the game then PLEASE don't show us the same ugly animation from previous years!!!

Im not a graphics nut but after seeing Backbreaker I would've thought EA would atleast make the grass look a bit more realistic. We are on the 6th iteration of Madden on Next Gen consoles and not much has changed regarding graphics. Hopefully the physics and animations are top notch this year. Only thing I've wanted from Next Gen consoles but EA has not delivered on that as of yet.

Im just tired of the same s*** each year....Last year we were promised sideline catches, specific stadium sounds, etc... and when the game came out they were nowhere to be found.... REMEMBER THIS???
http://insideblog.easports.com/archi...irst-look.aspx

S***!...The CPU can throw a bullet pass and I can click on the defender and press L2 and strafte in 1 second to pick the ball off without ever seeing the ball. The CPU does that aswell....I never saw that technology work in Madden 10!

2nd!!..WR/DB JOSTLING!!

"Adding these animations also allowed us the ability to call more realistic pass interference penalties. We've added a lot of variety that ranges from minor hand-fighting to severe push-offs and holds, so now we can make sure that pass interference gets called in a much more accurate manner. We're using the man coverage rating of the defender to determine how well he keeps the WR in check and how often he gets penalized. "

ARE YOU SERIOUS!!!!... Your lucky to see 1 Pass Interference call in 30 games...

Like I've said before I will buy this game day 1 because I am a biiiggg madden fan but I am TIRED TIRED TIRED!!!!. I still think having David Ortiz lead Next Gen consoles was the biggest factor in why we are still lacking specific features in the madden series. The framework was broke from the gate so it takes ALOT of work to get it back up to speed.

I agree 100% and I think we speak for 90% of the madden community.

I'm quite surprised with how news about a feature that will more than likely help the game can bring such animosity.

After seeing the Boldin picture I think it is safe to say Madden will be another huge disappointment. There is nothing real about Melvin Bullet being 5 feet up in the air barely grabbing onto Boldin. Another year of Space like animations GREATTTTTTTTT!!!!!

Yeah... I mean it isn't like the game is still greatly being worked on or anything like that

No you're not. I actually liked pro tak too. It could be better, but it was ok for a first generation technology

Nice to have some new info. With that said I agree with both sides of the posts here. It's early so I think we should still wait and see what else they have in store, but I also agree that we've heard "hey we've fix abc.." before and when we played the game we couldn't tell.

As far as the graphics are concerned these screens are probably basically Madden 10. They probably haven't started to add the polish and some of the animations so old things will still be visible. I think they will get better.

Even if they don't I'd settle for these graphics with much improved animations and presentation. You know actual close-ups that we see on sundays, and replays as well.

# 157 bxgoods @ 03/24/10 03:20 PM
The screens leave me disappointed, it looks like Madden 10. I was hoping they would get rid of that stick figure problem in 10, and add more meat to the players. The players are too skinny, they don't look like real football players.

Really trying to not troll here, but with the Pro-Madden agenda i'll probably get banned anyway, nonetheless, I just want to give my opinion on what I've seen and heard so far this year and in the past. This new article made me chuckle a little bit. First, EA comes out and basically says, "One of our main goals is to find a way to have people spend more and more money on this game, and to accomplish this, we will be adding things in DLC that we could have put in the game in the first place." What Peter Moore basically was saying is, "Why put something in Madden 11, when people will pay an extra $5-10 per copy of the game to have it in?" This becomes obvious when Madden 11 starts pimping that they have "sideline catches." Really, sideline catches? I thought this was suppose to be in Madden 08? I KNOW Ian said it was going to be in Madden 10. Th fact is Madden had been going downhill every year since it came to the next gen consoles, and Madden 10 plateaued the fall, but Madden 11 seems to be right back on track with 07,08,09. Do you REALLY believe that the additional gameplay improvements are with another 60 dollars? I guarantee you could go into Madden 10 and capture the same exact screenshots, minus the fact that EA photoshops them all. Along with the extra $15 that Peter Moore wants to take from your wallet. Personally I am done with the franchise, and hope some of you realize that Madden doesn't have your best intentions at heart as much as you think they do.
