Madden 09 News Post

Evening,

There's been a lot of discussion around rosters and patches so i wanted to go ahead and post an update.

Rosters
For those that manged to get an early copy, you may have noticed that a roster update was recently made available. Many of you also noticed that Brett Favre was listed as the 2nd QB for the Packers. This roster was posted up as a final test of our roster update capability. We're actually prepping a more final roster update that should be available on 8/11.

As for our roster update frequency... Our current plan is to update rosters about every two weeks. This could change based on major roster movement but expect us to drop rosters on an average of twice a month through the Super Bowl.

Patch
Yes, I'm finally going to discuss the state and details of the patch.

Regarding the patch status... Yes we submitted a patch to MS and Sony about a week ago. They are currently going through certification and all indications point to them going live some time next week. Please understand that it's very easy for issues with the patch to delay the release of the patch. For example, if MS finds a new bug with the patch, it would easily be delayed by 2 weeks. We're hopeful the patch will drop on or around 8/14.

What's in the patch?

There's a number of changes in this patch. Most would never be noticed by the average consumer but some were targeted at improving the experience as quickly as we could.

1. Changed default quarter length of online leagues to 5 minutes.
2. Solved a very rare stability issue that occured when using a couple of playbooks.
3. Eliminated a button mashing glitch during high latency online games.
4. Eliminated a stability issue that sometimes occured while viewing the player HUB in online leagues.
5. Fixed a tricky disc eject glitch that occured at specific points of online games.
6. Kick Return Tuning - made improvements to help reduce frequent long kick returns.
7. Safety Tuning - eliminated issue where safeties in deep zone coverage would sometimes not react to a run to their side.
8. The game skill slider for interceptions was tuned to amplify it's affect.

What about some of the other early feedback on the game? Keep reading, we're not done.

Patch #2 & DLC
Now that some details for patch #1 have been discussed, it's important to note that we're not done. We think it's very important to continue to improve the game even after it's release. We're actually very happy with the non-patched product but having the ability to patch the game to make it the ultimate experience is fantastic capability that we definately want to use.

We're already hard at work on the 2nd patch and are also evaluating releasing a FREE DLC. Here's a sneak preview of what you might expect in future updates.

Patch #2 Possibilities
Please understand this list is under construction and won't be finalized until we've received more feedback on the final game from the community.
1. Ghost Juking OOB fix - aka CPU players running out of bounds
2. CPU Accuracy tuning
3. Amplify the field degredation effect (the system is currently working but is hidden by some of our late added post effects)
4. Other post-release community feedback

DLC Possibilities
The same warning comes with this one. We're still evaluating these changes and are working hard to get them out as quick as possible.
1. Accelerated Clock
2. CPU Sliders (you would have the all new human sliders as well as a brand new screen of CPU sliders)
3. Legacy Gen Controller Config
4. Madden Community Gamerpics (a variety of gamerpics that will show what community you belong to. make sure your community managers know you want an OS gamerpic.)

We're targeting a mid-September release for patch#2 and the DLC but will give constant updates and screenshots as we progress.

I look forward to seeing all of your very constructive feedback next week when the game is released and will do my best to answer additional questions here.

Phil

No, there is a difference. Right now I have both versions (PS3 and 360) as I mentioned. The PS3 gameplay is slightly better in some areas. The areas I notice are returns and some of the safety play. The safety play is subtle, but they come up quicker on runs, and seem to play better coverage (although that may be placebo effect for me). Return coverage is definitely better. If you want to know some of the other things supposedly fixed, do a search as I know it was talked about by one of the devs.

If you have a chise going, will you need to restart it after the 2nd patch for the gameplay fixes to take effect?

Yep same question should 360 users wait to start franchise until the patch comes out?

Nice job, Microsoft. It's perfectly acceptable that we should have to wait a week longer than PS3 owners.

I bought Madden on Wednesday, went on xbox live and can't find a roster update. Am I doing something wrong?

Fair?... FAIR?!

What the...? FAIR? Why is this "Fair" to you? Why would this be considered "fair" to anyone? Is there something I am missing here? Is this SUPPOSED to be how it is? Is there some kind of negotiating going on with gamers and developers about how glitches/problems are to be addressed or fixed with a patch?

I am very happy that EA is doing this. I am but I don't understand the "fair" part of your statement. They have had 20 years to make a realistic game of football so why were these problems not fixed before release? I fully understand the new consoles but they have had a YEAR at minimum with this engine to get these things fixed before release. I am convinced they don't have beta testers. Or ANY testers. Or, they just don't listen. I found a **** LOAD of problems my first game (this is after a few FREEZES that I had BEFORE I could even GET through a complete game!) so screw this "fair" business.

And why are you thanking Phil? Or anyone for that matter. Don't be a kiss *** dude. It's embarrassing. They are making a killing off of us suckers who purchase their games so they should be thanking YOU! I mean NO OFFENSE to you man. None at all. I am sure you're a nice guy but it just irks me to no end when I see posts like yours. EA knows EXACTLY what they are doing and I would not be the LEAST bit surprised if this whole patch thing was planned WAY in advance to make it LOOK as though they are HARD AT WORK TO MAKE US HAPPY!

Yeah right. One step forwards and two steps back for Madden. Every single year.

Having said that, I have heard that the Wii version actually has PENALTIES!! (imagine that) and plays a pretty good game of football (at least better than 360/PS3) so I am going to give that version a go and see what happens. And yes, I am aware of the irony here

EA isn't all bad. So far Head Coach is pretty damn impressive and I am LOVING it! They also publish some pretty awesome titles (publish-not develop) Why can't they get Madden right? You'd think after 20 years we would have a MUCH better representation of the game of football but IMO we are still a long way off which is truly a shame.

Competition breeds quality. True story.

And with that I am off to Gamestop to give EA more of my money for I am indeed one of the millions of fools we have here on this fine planet.

Still no patch for the 360 then?

You obviously don't have slightest clue on how video games are developed. I'm not gonna make is seem like I do, but I at least understand how long it takes to get these things done. Not to mention how long it takes to go through Microsoft and Sony.

Unfortunately, in my opinion, your getting a little worked up about absolutely nothing. He is being nice to the EA guy because he has no obligation to come to this board and post anything. Yet he is and it goes a long way to keeping us informed and in touch with the inner workings of the game.

Not only that, but they have no obligation to put a patch out. That's why its fair. I don't dispute the fact that the game shouldn't need a patch, but that has been the reality since video games began. Be thankful they are even willing to do it.

Be fair man.. 360 owners usually get patches and upates well before ps3 owners. Honestly thats how it usually is.. and even though i dont have a ps3..i always sorta felt bad for the ps3 owners..let them get a piece of the pie first for once.

go online and start a ranked game. It will prompts you to load the roster update. Then backout of the game and you're set.

i just hope the patch fixes the qb acc. and linemen engagements. this game is pretty solid from there...

Question, Have any of you ever bought a game that was perfect? I do agree that there are issues, but this game is still worth my $60. I remember a time when we didn't have roster updates and patches, but this is a very good game. I do agree that if there was competition these things would not be an issue, but have you played some of the horrible non Madden football games. 2k was the only real comp. I have been reading the boards and though some of the complaints are valid a lot of us just need to find a hobby and take madden for what is is,"a video game".They must be doing something right, every year these same people are driving 2 or 3 hours just to get it 2 days early....sigh!

Thats true. I understand about the whole approval process and all but you get my point. And I'm not THAT worked up. But tell me this, why then did the folks over at 2K get it done a lot better than EA in a lot less time? Explain that. That logic just doesn't compute.

And yes I know he was being nice to the EA guy but this whole "keeping us informed" is goofy to begin with. IMO, there shouldn't be a need to after 20 years of development. Again, 2K's developers did a hell of a job on their first football game. As I understand it there were some developers from the EA team that worked on it? Still, same logic applies right?

You're doing the same thing so many other people do and thats make excuses for EA. You may be what they call an enabler. You are lying to yourself if you believe that a lot of what EA does with Madden isn't done on purpose. I mean, it's their business plan. If one of the developers came in one day and said "EUREKA! I HAVE DISCOVERED THE PERFECT CODE FOR THE PERFECT GAME OF FOOTBALL!!" do you think the suits at EA would implement it? No friggin' way! LOL! They would slowly add parts of it over the coarse of a lifetime and at the same time purposefully break other parts of the game (that were fine to begin with) just so they can claim "We listen to our customers and are working hard to blah blah blah..." They do this EVERY YEAR! One year we have a realistic amount of penalties, the next year WE DON'T! One year we have pretty good presentation, the next year WE DON'T ( and don't give me the "NEXT GEN" excuse) this is so obviously done to make us sheep (and I am indeed a part of the herd) believe that they are trying their damnedest to bring us a realistic game of football when in fact, it's "all...part of the plaaaan".

No big deal. I am actually laughing so don't get all worked up. And we still have NFL HC which I like. And hopefully the Wii version is indeed a better game realitically speaking than its next gen version and i'll be content. And with EA, that is the whole goal with them. Make them content juuuuust enough to bring them back for more the next year.

Ain't that right EA?!

I am just as much a part of the problem as everyone else that buys into their hype machine so it's not like i'm bashing anyone other than EA. And it's America dammit! I am allowed to gripe about them!

Where did you get the PS3 rosters? From within the game or from your PC? I just got the game yesterday and went online from within Madden (my first time to play this game since Madden 2002 on the PS2) and couldn't find any rosters. If from your PC, what site?

Further study is warranted.

So im assuming that no patch is out yet. Not being a Microsoft know-it-all, when do they typically release patches or stuff to the servers?
