Madden 09 News Post

Evening,

There's been a lot of discussion around rosters and patches so i wanted to go ahead and post an update.

Rosters
For those that manged to get an early copy, you may have noticed that a roster update was recently made available. Many of you also noticed that Brett Favre was listed as the 2nd QB for the Packers. This roster was posted up as a final test of our roster update capability. We're actually prepping a more final roster update that should be available on 8/11.

As for our roster update frequency... Our current plan is to update rosters about every two weeks. This could change based on major roster movement but expect us to drop rosters on an average of twice a month through the Super Bowl.

Patch
Yes, I'm finally going to discuss the state and details of the patch.

Regarding the patch status... Yes we submitted a patch to MS and Sony about a week ago. They are currently going through certification and all indications point to them going live some time next week. Please understand that it's very easy for issues with the patch to delay the release of the patch. For example, if MS finds a new bug with the patch, it would easily be delayed by 2 weeks. We're hopeful the patch will drop on or around 8/14.

What's in the patch?

There's a number of changes in this patch. Most would never be noticed by the average consumer but some were targeted at improving the experience as quickly as we could.

1. Changed default quarter length of online leagues to 5 minutes.
2. Solved a very rare stability issue that occured when using a couple of playbooks.
3. Eliminated a button mashing glitch during high latency online games.
4. Eliminated a stability issue that sometimes occured while viewing the player HUB in online leagues.
5. Fixed a tricky disc eject glitch that occured at specific points of online games.
6. Kick Return Tuning - made improvements to help reduce frequent long kick returns.
7. Safety Tuning - eliminated issue where safeties in deep zone coverage would sometimes not react to a run to their side.
8. The game skill slider for interceptions was tuned to amplify it's affect.

What about some of the other early feedback on the game? Keep reading, we're not done.

Patch #2 & DLC
Now that some details for patch #1 have been discussed, it's important to note that we're not done. We think it's very important to continue to improve the game even after it's release. We're actually very happy with the non-patched product but having the ability to patch the game to make it the ultimate experience is fantastic capability that we definately want to use.

We're already hard at work on the 2nd patch and are also evaluating releasing a FREE DLC. Here's a sneak preview of what you might expect in future updates.

Patch #2 Possibilities
Please understand this list is under construction and won't be finalized until we've received more feedback on the final game from the community.
1. Ghost Juking OOB fix - aka CPU players running out of bounds
2. CPU Accuracy tuning
3. Amplify the field degredation effect (the system is currently working but is hidden by some of our late added post effects)
4. Other post-release community feedback

DLC Possibilities
The same warning comes with this one. We're still evaluating these changes and are working hard to get them out as quick as possible.
1. Accelerated Clock
2. CPU Sliders (you would have the all new human sliders as well as a brand new screen of CPU sliders)
3. Legacy Gen Controller Config
4. Madden Community Gamerpics (a variety of gamerpics that will show what community you belong to. make sure your community managers know you want an OS gamerpic.)

We're targeting a mid-September release for patch#2 and the DLC but will give constant updates and screenshots as we progress.

I look forward to seeing all of your very constructive feedback next week when the game is released and will do my best to answer additional questions here.

Phil

And yes I know he was being nice to the EA guy but this whole "keeping us informed" is goofy to begin with. IMO, there shouldn't be a need to after 20 years of development. Again, 2K's developers did a hell of a job on their first football game. As I understand it there were some developers from the EA team that worked on it? Still, same logic applies right?

You're doing the same thing so many other people do and thats make excuses for EA. You may be what they call an enabler. You are lying to yourself if you believe that a lot of what EA does with Madden isn't done on purpose. I mean, it's their business plan. If one of the developers came in one day and said "EUREKA! I HAVE DISCOVERED THE PERFECT CODE FOR THE PERFECT GAME OF FOOTBALL!!" do you think the suits at EA would implement it? No friggin' way! LOL! They would slowly add parts of it over the coarse of a lifetime and at the same time purposefully break other parts of the game (that were fine to begin with) just so they can claim "We listen to our customers and are working hard to blah blah blah..." They do this EVERY YEAR! One year we have a realistic amount of penalties, the next year WE DON'T! One year we have pretty good presentation, the next year WE DON'T ( and don't give me the "NEXT GEN" excuse) this is so obviously done to make us sheep (and I am indeed a part of the herd) believe that they are trying their damnedest to bring us a realistic game of football when in fact, it's "all...part of the plaaaan".

No big deal. I am actually laughing so don't get all worked up. And we still have NFL HC which I like. And hopefully the Wii version is indeed a better game realitically speaking than its next gen version and i'll be content. And with EA, that is the whole goal with them. Make them content juuuuust enough to bring them back for more the next year.

Ain't that right EA?!

I am just as much a part of the problem as everyone else that buys into their hype machine so it's not like i'm bashing anyone other than EA. And it's America dammit! I am allowed to gripe about them!
Wow! you really are getting mad. Hey why don't you call a girl you haven't talked to in a while and go out on the town and have some fun."I'm really getting worked up now",LOL.

I do agree that if there was competition these things would not be an issue, but have you played some of the horrible non Madden football games. 2k was the only real comp. I have been reading the boards and though some of the complaints are valid a lot of us just need to find a hobby and take madden for what is is,"a video game".They must be doing something right, every year these same people are driving 2 or 3 hours just to get it 2 days early....sigh!
Yep, Tetris.

And besides, I never said anything about wanting the game to be PERFECT! Just a whole lot better. There is a difference.

Come on man, if you're indeed a football freak like me and also love playing video games then you should understand where all the complaints come. It's not like we are all just saying crap for the hell of it. NFL 2K wasn't a perfect game at all but IMO it was a whole lot better than EA's game. A lot of people agree with this.

Don't you want a realistic experience when you fire up Madden? Wouldn't it be cool if we had a half time show of some sorts with highlights from the game and around the league? What about the penalty issue. Does this not bother you? Or players that really responded like they do in real life during a play? (or at least a lot closer)

What about the cpu time management issue? Does this not bother you either? To watch them make stupid calls over and over again.

There is a ton of problems with Madden that should have been corrected YEARS ago.

As long as there are people like us (yes US) that keep paying them every year and as long as they have ZERO competition it will ALWAYS be like this. We will TRAGICALLY never, ever, ever get a realistic game of football.

I sure wish 2K would keep on with their APF series but I understand it just isn't feasible for them. What a MAJOR drag this whole NFL license deal was for us video gamers. Un-American and sad.

BTW, did you all just see on CNN where Toyota is going to be the only car manufacturer starting in 2012? Yep, from 2012 on we will ALL have to drive Toyotas. AND, they are only going to make one color.

Bummer.

Comparing the Q&A process for a next-gen title like Madden to that used on a game that probably requires less computing power than some major household appliances is not the best way to make your point.

No thread is safe on OS right now. They all go down the same dumba** path.

I Agree, though all I really want is field degradation, cpu accuracy to drop and the safetys and corners to react better.

Phil and Ian,
Great to hear your working on a second patch.
If seemed in your post Phil that you were looking for community feedback. I know that myself and several of my friends have been buying the PS2 versions for the last few years mostly b/c we like more camera options. For us we all love to play in the overhead view (NCAA) on Madden Long (Madden). I've been waiting 4 years for this now and although I like the new action cam better than the Classic. I would probably fall in love with this game again if I could play in the view I wanted.
Regards

You have to go online and start an online match. Then just back out before you start it. It will give you the online rosters and ask if you want to save it.

I'll take what you're talking about. Funny thing is NFL 2K5 had a lot of this. Next year is the year! (You can tell I am a Cubs fan).

For the life of me, I will never understand why they abandoned different camera angles. I suspect in the beginning, it was for technical reasons, but by now they could have added it back.

And please, please make sure to get those CPU sliders and Accelerated Clock in a patch or downloadable content. I promise I won't badmouth you EA guys (at least for another year .

I think when "on or around 8/14" is put out there, it is a given that many people will take that as 8/14 at the latest (even though I know that isn't correct). With all the interaction that took place before release, an update on the first patch would be nice if it isn't dropping today.

oooohhh...Please put the accelerated clock in...That would be HUGE...Then I could actually play out a good strategic game of football rather than feeling rushed to get plays off in order to see a normal amount of run/pass attempts.

Accelerated clock is must...Pretty pretty please.

my thing is where are the developers now. dont stop coming in once you've got the $. keep us posted. even if you were to say "there was an issue with the patch. we want to resolve it so you get the best of it.", then many ppl would appreciate that rather than not hearing anything and letting imaginations run wild...imo...
