MLB 2K8 News Post

Matt Blumenthal had an opportunity to demo Major League Baseball 2K8 this afternoon. His official writeup of the event will be up later this week, but we wanted to get some quick thoughts up here for you guys.
  • This game looks beautiful, the player models have improved but the real leap is in the animations. The animations move silky smooth and there is no need to worry about herky jerky animations of the past anymore.
  • I'm impressed with how intuitive and fresh the analog controls are. The pitching takes a little time to get the hang of but the new mechanics add a whole new dimension to the pitching model.
  • The baseball cards feature is surprisingly cool, expect me to have more on that later on this week.
  • In-game saves are officially in the game this year.
  • Check swings don't seem to be a chore anymore. They are now accomplished by pulling back on the right analog stick - no more right trigger necessary.
  • Stadium-specific animations are in. The Yankee Roll Call was mentioned specifically.
  • There should be plenty of foul balls this year. I saw several in the few at-bats I played.
  • No spring training games this year.
  • I counted eight unlockable classic stadiums. I think more might be available by default as well.
  • No co-op play
  • You will have the option to make trades for CPU-controlled teams in franchise mode, but you won't be able to edit their rotations and lineups.
  • It was suggested to me that the demo is done and has been submitted. If that's the case, it's in Microsoft's hands now.
  • I will hit on a few of the big questions from the forum here.

I hope this is something that can be patched... I played the show at gamestop and it's looking awfully good right now...

I totally agree. I am ITCHING bad to play this game as I love baseball games- but choppiness and a graphical downgrade? The meatball pitches things seems to be way overblown as well but I'm sure that can probably be adjusted with sliders.

I am waiting for either a demo, or some in depth reviews before plunking down $60 on this one. I'm going to have to stay away from electronics stores though because I am an impulse buyer and if I see it I'll probably buy it.

Thank goodness I have MLB 08 The Show on PS3, or I wouldn't be able to wait it out. Need my baseball fix!!

Why do all my other games run fine on 1080i though?

These early posts are probably going to make me around $430 lighter in the pocket today...

Where are you getting a ps3 for 370?

just messed around with the game a bit.

Graphics are okay. not bad but nothing that makes you say WOW. Really like the new throwing meter / controls. Game plays better than last years so if you liked last years you should not have any worries. I haven't messed with sliders or anything as I am just getting a feel for the game. There are definitely some frame rate issues at times but I don't think it affects the game play. Not sure if this will take my time away from the other game. I am going back and forth right now playing the same teams and kind of comparing the two.

Sounds like MVP 2005 still is the best baseball game out there. How sad to say this in 2008 with next gen systems out there.

Hey,

I don't have MLB 2k8 (yet), but I did pick up MLB 08 The Show last week, was so excited to play it, then it would get to the "Press Start" screen, then when I hit start it would freeze right there.

I thought after all this wait, I had gotten a defective copy! And I had driven a long way, bought it at some ghetto mom and pop location with no receipt.

Anways, I went to the PS3 main menu and set internet connection to "disabled" and the game started fine. Some people on The Show boards chimed in and said they had the same problem and it is related to what router you are using.

Maybe it could be the same with yours just on a different game? If you want to read the thread I started on The Show board the thread title was "Defective! I may be SOL".

Hope that helps.

Can you guys that don't have the game keep your opinions of why it was a good idea to hold off buying the game to yourself. It's hard to distinguish the impressions from the reaction to the impressions.

I think 08 the show holds that title now

Well it'd be a game issue.

What your doing by forcing it to output in 720p is making your TV convert it to 1080i. Some TVs do it better than others..

Well you don't have to worry about me being scared off. I'm still buying it regardless. Unless it's already sold out in which case you won't see me posting a lot until I do get the game in my hands.

Can turning off the ball trail, and the announcers (I do anyway) make the frame rate better?

Well I play on sdtv and the game is very choppy in the field. Very noticeable. Uggh. I can still deal with it though.

Well, it seems that when I select Online, It stops at Signing in and I have to go behind my PS3 and flip the switch on and off. System does nothing until I do that. Curious if this is happening to anyone else.

I agree other than the fact that it doesn't take hours of play to see framerate issues...that is a killer for me...
