MLB 2K8 News Post

Matt Blumenthal had an opportunity to demo Major League Baseball 2K8 this afternoon. His official writeup of the event will be up later this week, but we wanted to get some quick thoughts up here for you guys.
  • This game looks beautiful, the player models have improved but the real leap is in the animations. The animations move silky smooth and there is no need to worry about herky jerky animations of the past anymore.
  • I'm impressed with how intuitive and fresh the analog controls are. The pitching takes a little time to get the hang of but the new mechanics add a whole new dimension to the pitching model.
  • The baseball cards feature is surprisingly cool, expect me to have more on that later on this week.
  • In-game saves are officially in the game this year.
  • Check swings don't seem to be a chore anymore. They are now accomplished by pulling back on the right analog stick - no more right trigger necessary.
  • Stadium-specific animations are in. The Yankee Roll Call was mentioned specifically.
  • There should be plenty of foul balls this year. I saw several in the few at-bats I played.
  • No spring training games this year.
  • I counted eight unlockable classic stadiums. I think more might be available by default as well.
  • No co-op play
  • You will have the option to make trades for CPU-controlled teams in franchise mode, but you won't be able to edit their rotations and lineups.
  • It was suggested to me that the demo is done and has been submitted. If that's the case, it's in Microsoft's hands now.
  • I will hit on a few of the big questions from the forum here.

Makes no sense.
Because maybe the beta version was stripped down? How does that not make any sense?

I had concerns when they made the announcement seeing they couldn't get a steady 30FPS last year.

I haven't seen it yet but if true, disappointing. 3 years for frame rate problems.

the other game is awesome and I'm hoping this one turns out to be also. I just want us gamers to have as many good options to play this year for our enjoyment. Gonna go pick it up now and give my impressions which isn't saying much.
JSKYWALKER1, Ive seen you on The Show boards. Had the Show 08 since Saturday, and lovin it.

seeing as how you also have the Show (or at least played demo) I would love to see some impressions from you, stating the system you picked it up for (I have both PS3 and 360) and a comparison between the 2 games. Setup (what type of TV & res) would also be nice seeing as how some seem to be having framerate problems on certain setups.

I really hope this game turns out good as I am looking for a reason to buy it. Can never have too many good baseball games!

Could it be a cache issue?

It wouldn't be the first MLB2K that has had issues that were resolved with clearing it.

This cant be..... All the reports seem conclusive.

I think it's the game engine or either the graphics engine(if that makes sense)

what i mean is it seems that they didn't rewrite code so it's gets mixed up with old I'm assuming kinda like the nba 2k games. they didn't REALLY fully redo the graphics engines just tweaked them...

But a beta, should be just that.

A full version should be as bug free as possible.

With the beta, you suppose to iron out all the bugs you find, not create new ones.

If the game is so choppy why didn't they hold it back to fix it, or even in the videos from IGN or Vetszballin we'd see some choppiness unless that was the same beta that have been played by Steve

Folks from all over the net are confirming the framerate issue. And the scary thing it's happening to lot's of sets - 720,1080,Sd etc.

Let's hope we can get this thing figured out

I'm holding out for more impressions, but this makes my heart sink.

So much for my big plan of buying a 360 right away for some hardball heaven.

i can definatly confirm that there is alot of choppiness. my reccomendation for anyone thinking about getting this game is to wait for more impressions. graphics are major downgrade they cut content such as some uniforms, etc and its very laggy/ i thought it was freezing a few times but it never did. again, these are my initial impressions maybe 1-2 hours with the game. im not telling anyone to not buy it the game sucks, im telling you that if 60 bucks is alot of money for you or hard to come by, wait till tomorrow or thursday when this board can get alot more solid impressions.

I wonder if I will see framerate issues if I am using a LCD monitor?

I can't comment on the MLB2K8 PS3 because I do not have it but will be going soon to get it, as for the Show it's WONDERFUL IMO!!!! I play it on a 50' Plasma tv 720p. I am keeping my fingers crossed that I like MLB2K8 just as much if not more. Heck last years 2K7 I liked so I just can't see this year being all that bad. Plus I don't want to talk about the Show on this board that is designed for 2K8 unless the Mods agree to have a MLB 08 vs MLB2K8. Peace!!!

Are framerate issues something that could be fixed in a patch or is it something that is too "big" of a problem?
I was going to buy this today, but now I'm having doubts...wonder if anyone updated High Heat 2004 rosters for 2008?

# 556 FedEx227 @ 03/04/08 01:07 PM
I'm a bit scared to be honest. I heard gameplay outside of the framerate problems is fantastic, so that's a plus considering they can always patch.

But I'm still a bit scared, I had pretty high hopes for this one.

# 557 soldaderyan @ 03/04/08 01:09 PM
yep im scared too :S

# 558 pearljimkusz @ 03/04/08 01:11 PM
when its not choppy the gameplay is very fun from what i've played so far..pitching is challenging, and the fielding/throwing is really fun...also the sig celebrations i've seen so far have been pretty sweet...manny's most noticeably

Thanks! There really should be maybe a board set up for comparisons between games of the same sport. What stinks is there are a lot of fanboys out there who will mistreat it and use it to bash the other side (and thus rationalize their purchase).

They ruin it for people like me who have no bias. I have PS3 and 360, had 2K7 and The Show 07 and liked both, have the Show 08 and would like to get MLB 2K8 unless it stinks.

Looks like I might have saved myself $60. I wish I was more patient last summer before I flushed $60 down the drain on NCAA Football. Just as well, College Hoops, NHL 08 and NBA 2k will keep me occupied through the summer.
