MLB 2K8 News Post

Matt Blumenthal had an opportunity to demo Major League Baseball 2K8 this afternoon. His official writeup of the event will be up later this week, but we wanted to get some quick thoughts up here for you guys.
  • This game looks beautiful, the player models have improved but the real leap is in the animations. The animations move silky smooth and there is no need to worry about herky jerky animations of the past anymore.
  • I'm impressed with how intuitive and fresh the analog controls are. The pitching takes a little time to get the hang of but the new mechanics add a whole new dimension to the pitching model.
  • The baseball cards feature is surprisingly cool, expect me to have more on that later on this week.
  • In-game saves are officially in the game this year.
  • Check swings don't seem to be a chore anymore. They are now accomplished by pulling back on the right analog stick - no more right trigger necessary.
  • Stadium-specific animations are in. The Yankee Roll Call was mentioned specifically.
  • There should be plenty of foul balls this year. I saw several in the few at-bats I played.
  • No spring training games this year.
  • I counted eight unlockable classic stadiums. I think more might be available by default as well.
  • No co-op play
  • You will have the option to make trades for CPU-controlled teams in franchise mode, but you won't be able to edit their rotations and lineups.
  • It was suggested to me that the demo is done and has been submitted. If that's the case, it's in Microsoft's hands now.
  • I will hit on a few of the big questions from the forum here.

Much like the earlier impressions, I get the feeling 2K8 does not like running in 1080i/1080p.

I'm curious what setup Steve played the beta in because he didn't mention anything about frame rate.

So if I have a standard TV is it going to play really bad?

# 485 lived @ 03/04/08 12:30 PM
No, I think the choppyness is only happening to HDTV's.

HAH! for once it pays for being cheap and having a standard def TV. Well no problems with choppiness when I pick this bad boy up!

That's because that song is one of the Stadium Beats. You can take it out.

I cant see how playing on a SDTV can give you the same choppiness of a 1080i. I mean your resolution is only at 420i. I mean playing 2k7 on my SDTV in widescreen option the framerate was Ok it hiccuped bad at certain times but not as bad as what people are saying, and to not have that fixed this year is rediculous.

The choppiness so far has been interlace displays which would be SDTVs also..

Can anyone fill us in on the crowd atmosphere. Noise level, Loud at the right times etc.

Awesome.
Why is there always a giant bruise on the 2K apple?

Woa.. early verdict is showing it was good to hold off on this, hope they at least have a patch for the issues

Cripes man, Every year there's something huge or distracting about 2K's baseball product. Oh well, I guess I could live with it if the gameplay is good.

I want to hear more from people with the game with SDTV's.. this is worrying me.. doesn't sound like a good buy.

# 497 UNC_Pete @ 03/04/08 12:36 PM
I'm reserving judgment until I see it myself, though. The problem is that some interlace native TVs will convert from 720p better than others, so it may be hit or miss..But from what I gather if you do own an interlace native tv you should adjust to 720p before you even load up if you have the option to.

Anyone else with a PS3 version, does your PS3 lock up when you try and go Online?

Please post someone if you do NOT have this problem. I need to know if it's universal
