MLB 2K8 News Post

Matt Blumenthal had an opportunity to demo Major League Baseball 2K8 this afternoon. His official writeup of the event will be up later this week, but we wanted to get some quick thoughts up here for you guys.
  • This game looks beautiful, the player models have improved but the real leap is in the animations. The animations move silky smooth and there is no need to worry about herky jerky animations of the past anymore.
  • I'm impressed with how intuitive and fresh the analog controls are. The pitching takes a little time to get the hang of but the new mechanics add a whole new dimension to the pitching model.
  • The baseball cards feature is surprisingly cool, expect me to have more on that later on this week.
  • In-game saves are officially in the game this year.
  • Check swings don't seem to be a chore anymore. They are now accomplished by pulling back on the right analog stick - no more right trigger necessary.
  • Stadium-specific animations are in. The Yankee Roll Call was mentioned specifically.
  • There should be plenty of foul balls this year. I saw several in the few at-bats I played.
  • No spring training games this year.
  • I counted eight unlockable classic stadiums. I think more might be available by default as well.
  • No co-op play
  • You will have the option to make trades for CPU-controlled teams in franchise mode, but you won't be able to edit their rotations and lineups.
  • It was suggested to me that the demo is done and has been submitted. If that's the case, it's in Microsoft's hands now.
  • I will hit on a few of the big questions from the forum here.

For all those with the game here's my suggestion in reference to FRAME RATE ISSUE:.

If you have a FIXED PIXEL DISPLAY:

LCD or a PLASMA HDTV you should have your system set-up to output in either :

720p OR 1080p. YOU SHOULD NOT SELECT 1080i

If you have a CRT type HDTV, you should try enabling 720p within your system. If you get a signal, leave-it @ 720p.

If your CRT HDTV doesn't accept a 720p signal, then your only choice is to set your system to 1080i..

If you do this you should see improvements within the FRAME RATE of the game

This choppiness talk is scaring me...

Well, my main concern so far after reading the impressions is the "meatball" pitch. I couldn't stand this feature last year, but with the new pitching system, it sounds like this could potentially be a game killer for me.

To anyone that has played the game extensively, if you "miss" with a pitch, does it automatically become a meatball pitch? Basically, I'm scared that any bad pitch is going to result in a meatball pitch, which should not be the case.

Can anyone please give some feedback on this?

Are we under the impression that the frame rate problems are based on people's TV/dashboard settings?

If not, a choppy 2K8 could be a 'deal breaker' for me.

The choppiness I assume will go away if you set the 360 to output as 720p and let your TV convert to its native 1080i if your native mode is 1080i..

Why? In real baseball you are severely penalized for "hanging" a pitch. Great feature...you have to pitch well

Ok Setting it to 720p...

Ooh... that's very nice. Couple that with force trades on and it seems like they almost got CPU roster control down this year.

Check out the full game video on Vetzballin.com. It's clear that once we learn 'how' to pitch, meatballs will not be frequent. In fact, the CPU even fouled a few off in that video... they aren't automatic homeruns.

I think the initial, knee jerk detest of the meatballs is due to the fact people are adjusting to the new pitching mechanic.

This is what I'm getting from people. Those with Interlace TV's or Interlace set in their system settings are seeing real choppiness & those who have Progressive display & Progressive set in their system are not seeing as much

I thought you could turn off the meatball pitch feature anyway. Isn't there also a slider for the meatball pitches?

# 473 mcmagic13 @ 03/04/08 12:20 PM
Ok It's better in 720p but not smooth by any means...

Right now, I have my 360 hooked up to a Dell 24" monitor via VGA connector running at 1920x1080.. can't wait to get home and see if I get the choppyness.

You can turn OFF the MEATBALL Indicator & there's a slider to lower MEATBALL Pitches all together

How bad is the choppiness?

# 479 SPTO @ 03/04/08 12:24 PM
I'm too tired to wade through all this so can someone give me a consensus here for the X360? I'm going to pick it up at 2 PM time. (if they have it here which i'm sure they will) I also wonder if the choppiness won't be there on a Standard Def TV which is what I have my X360 hooked up to.

Thanks in advance.

I just dont get it why this game is soo choppy i mean i didnt look that way in the videos i saw. its hard to beleive that it would be worse than last years.
