MLB 2K8 News Post

Matt Blumenthal had an opportunity to demo Major League Baseball 2K8 this afternoon. His official writeup of the event will be up later this week, but we wanted to get some quick thoughts up here for you guys.
  • This game looks beautiful, the player models have improved but the real leap is in the animations. The animations move silky smooth and there is no need to worry about herky jerky animations of the past anymore.
  • I'm impressed with how intuitive and fresh the analog controls are. The pitching takes a little time to get the hang of but the new mechanics add a whole new dimension to the pitching model.
  • The baseball cards feature is surprisingly cool, expect me to have more on that later on this week.
  • In-game saves are officially in the game this year.
  • Check swings don't seem to be a chore anymore. They are now accomplished by pulling back on the right analog stick - no more right trigger necessary.
  • Stadium-specific animations are in. The Yankee Roll Call was mentioned specifically.
  • There should be plenty of foul balls this year. I saw several in the few at-bats I played.
  • No spring training games this year.
  • I counted eight unlockable classic stadiums. I think more might be available by default as well.
  • No co-op play
  • You will have the option to make trades for CPU-controlled teams in franchise mode, but you won't be able to edit their rotations and lineups.
  • It was suggested to me that the demo is done and has been submitted. If that's the case, it's in Microsoft's hands now.
  • I will hit on a few of the big questions from the forum here.

One question:
How is baserunning this year?
Thanks in advance.
Things seem good so far. Only thing I'm noticing, is that if you're impatient, and keep pressing A (on 360), your runner will run home, rather than it speeding up the game. I've been thrown out a few times because of that! =( Lol.

Everything looked about right.

Giambi makes $20M. Vernon Wells around $18M. I'm not sure if they're right on, or within the millionth, but it looked right.

Kiz, is there a reason why your using the buttons to advance runners & not the ANALOG STICK?

I hope this is true. I hate playing against the Yanks in my Franchise for example when the CPU has Abreu leading off, Giambi batting 2nd and Jeter way down in the lineup at like 7 or 8.

The left-analog is used to select the runner. When they're selected, you can press Y to go to 2nd, X to go to third, etc. It's great when you have a hitter like Reyes hit one into the gap, and you know you can take 3, and just pressing X to run for 3rd off the start.

Yeah, you can edit the lineup in the menu, when you're editing yours before the game.

Question on simmed games in franchise:
Can you jump in and out of sim games? Can I sim a game until I take over playing in the ninth inning? Can I jump out of a game that I am losing 10-2 in the fifth and the let the CPU sim the rest?
I'm pretty sure MVP had this. Never played 2k so I don't know.

Really, I though base running was, the button represented the runner & the ANALOG STICK was used to advance the runner to the base you want that runner to go.

Thanks for the answer

I thought so also. He just described how The Show has been doing it for 2 years now. I'm surprised they adopted the same method of running.

Maybe he is confused? Either way it's a very intuitive way to run the bases.

but you have the option to adjust the lineup on game day

So at least when we play the CPU their lineup will be 100% correct. I can live with that, I don't care if Derek Lee is batting lead off in a simmed CPU v CPU game.

You could do this the last couple years, so I'd be very surprised if it's gone this year.

Though it will affect his stats (i.e. less RBI's in leadoff spot). Oh well. Hopefully, the lineup AI has improved.

Def true but I'll settle for that over what we had last year.

It does mess it up, but the stats in a season don't mean anything to me for CPU teams. Honestly, I could care less. MVP '05 had awful sim numbers, most seasons the league leader in HR would be in the mid-30's and a million guys hit over .300 but it didn't bother me.

I have one favor for anyone who has the game; can you use Joba Chamberlain and see what his slider is like? I hope it has a realistic break, I have a feeling the break is going to be far too little.

Oh, no definitely not. I'm just saying in theory it won't be a gamekiller for me.
