MLB 2K8 News Post

Matt Blumenthal had an opportunity to demo Major League Baseball 2K8 this afternoon. His official writeup of the event will be up later this week, but we wanted to get some quick thoughts up here for you guys.
  • This game looks beautiful, the player models have improved but the real leap is in the animations. The animations move silky smooth and there is no need to worry about herky jerky animations of the past anymore.
  • I'm impressed with how intuitive and fresh the analog controls are. The pitching takes a little time to get the hang of but the new mechanics add a whole new dimension to the pitching model.
  • The baseball cards feature is surprisingly cool, expect me to have more on that later on this week.
  • In-game saves are officially in the game this year.
  • Check swings don't seem to be a chore anymore. They are now accomplished by pulling back on the right analog stick - no more right trigger necessary.
  • Stadium-specific animations are in. The Yankee Roll Call was mentioned specifically.
  • There should be plenty of foul balls this year. I saw several in the few at-bats I played.
  • No spring training games this year.
  • I counted eight unlockable classic stadiums. I think more might be available by default as well.
  • No co-op play
  • You will have the option to make trades for CPU-controlled teams in franchise mode, but you won't be able to edit their rotations and lineups.
  • It was suggested to me that the demo is done and has been submitted. If that's the case, it's in Microsoft's hands now.
  • I will hit on a few of the big questions from the forum here.

Yeah, they didnt have it at my walmart either. Then i asked the guy about Bully: Scholarship Edition, which is supposed to come out today too, and he said, "the guy never showed up today. We didnt get any of the new games we were supposed to."

Why couldnt they have told me that over the phone? Instead of saying, "Yeah, it should be on sale at midnight. But no, I can't confirm that for sure." Walmart.

Is the system just screwed up this time around? Online it says 2K8 should be in stores today and The Show tomorrow(Wednesday). But the stores are getting them the opposite way....
Wish I could go into EB today and pick them both up.
I plan on doing a split screen of both games playing at the same time with same teams etc.. just to get a comparison. Just for fun really.

ugh.......Sounds like The Show is going to sell some playstations for Sony. I might have to get one to play The Show

Should be getting my copy around noon EST today, will post some impressions after getting a few games in.
Someone is going to send me one. But last year they took a month to get us our free copies. Actually, they gave them to people at VC first and then said, ooops, we didnt order enough for you guys at Kush. Even though WE MADE THE GAME. I bought it on release day last year too. I have no patience when it comes to video games I "need" to play. And baseball certainly qualifies for that. I need to fire up a franchise ASAP.

I've only got to play one game, and that was against my roommate, so I can't tell you what the computer plays like.

The game does a lot of little things that I've sorely missed about baseball lo' these winter months here in the Big Smoke, I'd probably give it like an 8.

I like the pitching, and the fielding is very fluid. Long throws from the outfield were offline a lot, but we'd both never played the game before, and I can imagine this'll get better the more we play.

Peavy vs Webb was what we did. It started off really tight, but after they started getting worn, the offences took off, and I won 11-8. We just jumped right into 'play now' so I cant tell you what difficulty we were on.

Its a fun game, it's not perfect, but a great improvement from last time I played 2K baseball.

If the game was dissapointing, we were going to sell everything and buy a PS3 and the Show, but I'm pretty sure we'll be sticking with what we have.

Hit any home runs?If so, how were the celebrations?Does it show players high fiving like the Wii version?

Not according to gamestop/eb at our mall. That's what doesn't make sense. They told me I could pick up The Show today(Tuesday) and 2K8 on Wednesday. I didn't even get the automated call about 2K8 being available today(Tuesday) but I did for The Show.

There are player celebrations / reactions all over the place.

I hit a 2-run double in the bottom of the 7th to take the lead and Eric Byrnes lost his mind after sliding through the plate.

Also, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention how fantastic the game LOOKS, visually.

Quite, quite beautiful.

As someone who (literally) watches baseball 6 hours a day, I can't stress enough how blown away I was by some of the likenesses in the game.

Conor Jackson, Eric Byrnes, Khalil Greene, and Adrian Gonzalez come to mind immediately when thinking about it now. my roommate and I were both doing double takes a lot of the time.

SICK! Finally some emotion shown from the players!

What about the dugout reactions?Did they high five Byrnes when he got there?

How do walks (issuing, not drawing) and pitch counts look? That is by far the most important issue for me.

I did receive the automated call about my preordered 2K8 being available Tuesday afternoon. I got the call yesterday (Monday)at about 4pm.

"- The in-game presentation is worse than last year. I hate the new camera angle used to show the upcoming batter. Gone are the close-up face zooms of the upcoming batter"

why on earth would they do that.

its not enough that they have to lower the resolution, ruin the field textures and generally downgrade the graphics to increase the fps... but for some odd reason the nice closeup shots are gone too.. ?

youd think if your primary graphics goal for a year of development is to increase the framerate you wouldnt have to take away so much to get it.

anyway... at least i like the gameplay stuff im hearing and im anxious to try out the pitching. still buying tomorrow.

Question for someone who has played the game is the behind the pitcher cam the same as last year? Beacuse I liked theres and hated The Shows camera I hope 2K didn't change. But I guess Ill find out myself later today.

- The menu interface could be better. I don't like the font they used throughout the menus - it's too small at times.

- There is a Jan. 20 roster update when I checked online. Could change tomorrow though.

- I don't know why Aaron Hill is rated only a 72?!! WTF!!!

- A lot of the generic photos of players look bad.

- The in-game presentation is worse than last year. I hate the new camera angle used to show the upcoming batter. Gone are the close-up face zooms of the upcoming batter.

- Graphics actually look a bit worse than last year. The animations though have improved greatly especially the fielding.

- I don't like the slight stutter (load) after each batter - you'll see what I mean when you play the game.

- It seems like most of the commentary from Jon & Joe in 2K7 was reused here.

- Pitching will take sometime to get used to. You'll throw a lot of meatballs when starting.

- Franchise Mode doesn't feel that much different aside from having Minor League teams. It's basically the same thing with a new interface.

- Overall, the game isn't much of a great leap from 2K7. A little disappointed honestly, I guess I was expecting great things. Anyways, The Show is awesome though!!!
Gee.....good to see your enjoying the game :|

sorry if it's been mentioned, but how has the ease at hitting homeruns been address?

no matter how i changed the sliders for 2K7, homeruns were ridiculously easy. have they changed or addressed that any?

There is now a 2-29 Roster Update available.

And still no one online! =(
