MLB 2K8 News Post

Matt Blumenthal had an opportunity to demo Major League Baseball 2K8 this afternoon. His official writeup of the event will be up later this week, but we wanted to get some quick thoughts up here for you guys.
  • This game looks beautiful, the player models have improved but the real leap is in the animations. The animations move silky smooth and there is no need to worry about herky jerky animations of the past anymore.
  • I'm impressed with how intuitive and fresh the analog controls are. The pitching takes a little time to get the hang of but the new mechanics add a whole new dimension to the pitching model.
  • The baseball cards feature is surprisingly cool, expect me to have more on that later on this week.
  • In-game saves are officially in the game this year.
  • Check swings don't seem to be a chore anymore. They are now accomplished by pulling back on the right analog stick - no more right trigger necessary.
  • Stadium-specific animations are in. The Yankee Roll Call was mentioned specifically.
  • There should be plenty of foul balls this year. I saw several in the few at-bats I played.
  • No spring training games this year.
  • I counted eight unlockable classic stadiums. I think more might be available by default as well.
  • No co-op play
  • You will have the option to make trades for CPU-controlled teams in franchise mode, but you won't be able to edit their rotations and lineups.
  • It was suggested to me that the demo is done and has been submitted. If that's the case, it's in Microsoft's hands now.
  • I will hit on a few of the big questions from the forum here.

How is the crowd? From the Beta it seemed that they were a little flat.
Do they react appropriately? Do you get the sense you're sitting at the ballpark?

Thanks!

Can you give us some more in-depth impressions now that you have had more time to play?

Nothing against the guy, but when someone finishes up their review by praising the other game... it kinda loses merit.

Thats a good point. Also try to remember that Steve said he thinks 2k8 will surprise people this year. He also gave very favorable impressions of the game.

The guy that wrote those impressions that I commented on also posted them on the 2K Boards where everyone hates him for his continual bashing on 2K and praising of the show. So.......I would take what he says with a grain of salt.

I saw that also.

Ugh! Would someone with the freakin' game just post some early impressions?
How's the hitting? How's the pitching? Is the crowd realistic? Is the CPU AI smart?

Sorry, I just hate these threads. The first 16 pages is "I want this game", "I hope to have this game tonight".

Guys,

I heard that in franchise it says "Edit CPU rosters' is that giving us the ability to change CPU lineups/rotations or just the ability to make cpu team trades??

Blah! It's just trades. =(

I made the assumption it was the lineups / rotations, since that's the bigger issue.

And random things...
- Franchise Slider progression settings -- was that in there before? I never played Franchise last year, and didn't notice that. Hitter / Pitcher progression rates, as well as Hitter / Pitcher regression rates.

- This fielding with the right analog for throwing is absolutely amazing. For the first time in a baseball game, I actually threw one bullet, that bounced, and went into the crowd. I'm used to overthrows / bad throws, that are grabbed by whomever is backing up the play, but to actually have the ball go into the stands was nice to see.

- Home run celebrations ... don't exist, or not yet at least. Home run, replay x2 or 3, show pitchers disgust, show next batter coming to the play. Maybe when the games matter, they'll show it? Not sure though.

- Meatballs are going to have to be adjusted through the sliders for almost everyone. They get blasted a lot of the time.

- I changed the game from HDMI over to the component + optical cable, and the audio just got a lot better being over 5.1. It makes sense for baseball to be one game that takes advantage of surround sound, and it does it a lot better this way. Sucks for those with HDMI, but what can ya do.

- Catchers ratings seem to matter a lot more this year, with blocking passed balls from happening. Good defensive catchers are keeping it in front more than the lesser quality catchers.

Kiz, how long is a game taking you to finish?

That is awesome!

I am very interested in some franchise questions..

-Does the computer have good lineup AI? No more Greg Zaun leading off.
-When a new season starts are there still good players left in FA?
-Does the computer do a good job in the fantasy draft? In previous years alot of teams would take weird picks and their team would be pretty bad.

I know you are prolly trying a bunch of stuff out, but if you get a chance that would be great thanks.

Things look good, at least after the fantasy draft.

Glancing through, the worst team seems to be Tampa, but they also have BJ Upton, and Cano, so they probably drafted for potential.

One thing I noticed, was that the "No Budgets -- budget will be 110% of payroll after the draft" doesn't exactly work. I drafted the most expensive players, and had a payroll near 400 million. Budget was still "only" set at 175 or so, so it's not perfect with what it says.

Still trying out a lot though.

Not sure right now. It takes a bit of time. Maybe an hour or so? I haven't timed it, or even paid attention to time while playing it.

I'll pay attention next time. I also don't really pay attention to cut scenes / replays / etc., and get through them when they come up.

Kush mentioned that the PS3 & 360 are pretty much identical w/ gfx, framerate, progressive lighting,animations,responsiveness,etc...

Okay I have a pretty basic question.

When pitching, when you release the analog stick is that the place the circle stops or when you get the analog in the right position?(i.e for a fastball you go straight down then up.) To stop the circle in the green do you hold the analog stick up until it gets in the green or what?

Thanks for the impressions Kiz

Kiz, I have a question, does it look like they have players real salaries in the game? Could you look, thanks.

#1 = Power / Speed
#2 = Accuracy

So down until the power you want
Up for accuracy, and release when it's in the green

It's tough, and will take a while to get good at it.
