MLB 2K8 News Post

Matt Blumenthal had an opportunity to demo Major League Baseball 2K8 this afternoon. His official writeup of the event will be up later this week, but we wanted to get some quick thoughts up here for you guys.
  • This game looks beautiful, the player models have improved but the real leap is in the animations. The animations move silky smooth and there is no need to worry about herky jerky animations of the past anymore.
  • I'm impressed with how intuitive and fresh the analog controls are. The pitching takes a little time to get the hang of but the new mechanics add a whole new dimension to the pitching model.
  • The baseball cards feature is surprisingly cool, expect me to have more on that later on this week.
  • In-game saves are officially in the game this year.
  • Check swings don't seem to be a chore anymore. They are now accomplished by pulling back on the right analog stick - no more right trigger necessary.
  • Stadium-specific animations are in. The Yankee Roll Call was mentioned specifically.
  • There should be plenty of foul balls this year. I saw several in the few at-bats I played.
  • No spring training games this year.
  • I counted eight unlockable classic stadiums. I think more might be available by default as well.
  • No co-op play
  • You will have the option to make trades for CPU-controlled teams in franchise mode, but you won't be able to edit their rotations and lineups.
  • It was suggested to me that the demo is done and has been submitted. If that's the case, it's in Microsoft's hands now.
  • I will hit on a few of the big questions from the forum here.

Yikes, not what I wanted to hear. It's odd though since 2k didn't really touch the graphics of the game.

I am very skeptical on this. There are several outlets that have played the game, including Steve here at OS, who you think would have mentioned this 'massive' slowdown.

Steve mentioned some hiccups but nothing that makes it unplayable.

So the game isn't 60fps? I thought that was a major goal this year and part of the reason graphics saw some reduction.

Graphics are okay. not bad but nothing that makes you say WOW. Really like the new throwing meter / controls. Game plays better than last years so if you liked last years you should not have any worries. I haven't messed with sliders or anything as I am just getting a feel for the game. There are definitely some frame rate issues at times but I don't think it affects the game play. Not sure if this will take my time away from the other game. I am going back and forth right now playing the same teams and kind of comparing the two.
By "other game", I assume you mean The Show 08??

If so, please let me know how the 2 compare. I have the Show 08 and LOVE IT. With some minor slider adjustments it is the best baseball game I have ever played. However, based on MLB2K7, I really thought all they needed to do to get to the Show's level was improve animations and framerate, less HR's, more hit variety. Basically, make it play more like real baseball and make the players move smoother.

Any comparison would be appreciated.

Of course, those were the beta versions.

Have you tried different fielding cams?

Tried it on my HDTV at 720 and its still choppy but better then the sdtv. But I only have 1 hdtv in the house and its not mine. So im stuck with SDTV. Oh yeah. 2k and their infamous stutters.

Which system did you get it for?

Not yet, im gonna try them though and see if that makes a difference. I got my 360 in April of 06. Could be that, but I hope not cause COD4 runs so smooth on my sdtv.

Usually they are gifts from someone that were bought with credit cards...returning it would mean credit back to the person who bought it...

Does the choppyness make the game literally unplayable?

Makes me wonder if this is why no demo/reviews are out due to the issues gamers are seeing ala Nba Live 07 for 360???????. Mods not sure if this is the right place for my opinion if not please correct me.
the other game is awesome and I'm hoping this one turns out to be also. I just want us gamers to have as many good options to play this year for our enjoyment. Gonna go pick it up now and give my impressions which isn't saying much.

Well i'm heading out....Lordie, who'd thought my only choice would have such slowdown/framerate issues. How could the Beta play relatively so well and the retail version be junk?

I don't get it!

Dude,

Why would a beta version have no lag, and then a retail version which the intend to sell lags more?

Makes no sense.

Me too Hmmm...

I have very big reservations now ESP with the fact that i am not completely WOWed by MLB 08 either(AND i'm someone that went out and got the PS3 for it)

WHY in the world would this game STILL be choppy AFTER reducing polygons etc? It's baffling. i will reserve my "other" thought until i either purchase or rent-play the game...
