MLB 2K8 News Post

Matt Blumenthal had an opportunity to demo Major League Baseball 2K8 this afternoon. His official writeup of the event will be up later this week, but we wanted to get some quick thoughts up here for you guys.
  • This game looks beautiful, the player models have improved but the real leap is in the animations. The animations move silky smooth and there is no need to worry about herky jerky animations of the past anymore.
  • I'm impressed with how intuitive and fresh the analog controls are. The pitching takes a little time to get the hang of but the new mechanics add a whole new dimension to the pitching model.
  • The baseball cards feature is surprisingly cool, expect me to have more on that later on this week.
  • In-game saves are officially in the game this year.
  • Check swings don't seem to be a chore anymore. They are now accomplished by pulling back on the right analog stick - no more right trigger necessary.
  • Stadium-specific animations are in. The Yankee Roll Call was mentioned specifically.
  • There should be plenty of foul balls this year. I saw several in the few at-bats I played.
  • No spring training games this year.
  • I counted eight unlockable classic stadiums. I think more might be available by default as well.
  • No co-op play
  • You will have the option to make trades for CPU-controlled teams in franchise mode, but you won't be able to edit their rotations and lineups.
  • It was suggested to me that the demo is done and has been submitted. If that's the case, it's in Microsoft's hands now.
  • I will hit on a few of the big questions from the forum here.

I'm not sure if choppiness could be fixed in a patch. If there's an errant line of unoptimized code, then maybe. But if this is an inherent problem with 2K8's engine, I think we'll be out of luck.

I look forward to Kush's feedback once he posts his impressions.

If the problems are this prevalent, this also does not bode well for the series in general. There's word the MLB has already been frustrated with the quality of the product/series.

I wonder if the MLB has an "out" clause in the licensing contract?

Just got done playing a few innings. There is a definite downgrade in the graphics department this year. It's just not as sharp and the environments seem darker. Not as bright and lively as last years version.

The real problem is with the framerate. Everytime you get a hit the game stutters as it tracks the ball. It also does it when you make a throw. This is completely unacceptable. The 360 and PS3 have the capability of handling these tasks. 2K struck out this year. They had all year to work on this and to me, the framerate is worse than last years version.

So basically what we got this year for $60 is a downgrade in graphics, new pitching interface, updated menu system, new franchise mode, minor league teams, and horrible framerate problems.

Definitely a step back from last years version. This is what happens when game companies acquire licensing rights. I'm probably going to take this back. Hopefully EB will let me work something out.

Exclusive contracts SUCK. Thats all i have to say right now. This isn't an awful game at all but there is nothing good about a lack of competition...

How often is it choppy? On every batted ball? Once an inning?

Actually The Show 07 and 08 are better than MVP. MVP is the best for xbox.

My only big gripe so far is the fps. Game has a hard time keeping a constant frame rate. Lots of jerking around that can be annoying. It doesn't seem to affect game play. Plays better than last years so far. Really like the announcing and throwing meter. Graphics are bland.

Unbelievable......exclusive mlb license equals exclusive choppiness. PS3 here I come.

Well, I went from buying it earlier, to now taking it back to the store on the way home.

No way I play a game with that bad of a framerate. Thanks for saving me the $60 guys!

pretty much on every play so far for me. I am playing on 1080p. Wonder if I try 720p if it will help.

That's what I want to hear!

**** I'll play anything with High Heat 2004 or MVP 05 graphics as long as the gameplay is good. I've played MVP 05 continuously for the past 3-4 years, so I'd have no problem going back but I feel if the gameplay on this is at least good, then I'm all for it.

Basically everytime the ball is put in play, you notice it more on some camera angles than others. Batting and pitching is not bad, but there is occassional stuttering there too which doesn't effect the gameplay at least.

Yikes. I bought a PS3 last week just so I'd have a choice in baseball games (and for the blue-ray) but was still considering buying 2K8. The lack of a demo and the framerate concerns have made the choice easy for me.

Heel, can you try it on 720p and let us know? Nothing against others, but your's is an opinion I truly TRUST.

There really is no excuse for this, however. How developers let products ship with frame rate problems is beyond me.

Going to 720 helps...but only a bit.

If there are framerate issues, it's going to be The Show for me. I can't take a choppy framerate 3 years in a row.

I just can't get over The Show's lack of analog controls, the analog in 2K8 seems so much more engaging.

Ronoko,

So your opinion is that the chopiness is not effecting the gameplay all that much?

yes, I am going to try 720p and clearing the cache next game. Going to be about 1/2 hour before I play.

My framerate is absolutely fine playing in 720p. Everything is nice and smooth.
