I wouldn't do it, but I'm not him. More power to you Brady. I just hope the Patriots actually spend the money they saved on players to help him. Of note, He took a hometown discount in 05 and it didn't result in any rings.

Edit: I just read on Twitter that the entire deal is guaranteed. That's HUGE and changes a lot about how I perceive it.

The way Athletes have run thru their money so fast(especially in this economic climate)I wouldn't even hold my breath on that.

I think Tom is getting the better end of that deal. Guaranteed money at age 40. Yes please. Probably realizes he wont be 5 star forever.

Good move by Brady to take the pay cut. It's not like he needs the money and he'll still be earning a lot, but if he kept his current deal and hit FA in two years, he'd get way more than 3 years $27M

I'm guessing the money freed up will be spent on Wes Welker. Earlier today there were reports that said the Pats could sign Welker at around $8M per year, then Brady signs a new deal that frees up $8M in cap space.

Good work then. Sounds like everyone wins.

Re: 2013 Transactions Thread

Brady and the Patriots also helped out the Ravens:

Quote:
By helping themselves create space under the salary cap, the Patriots also helped one of their most bitter rivals. A little.
The new contract signed by quarterback Tom Brady will help make it cheaper for the Ravens to apply the exclusive level of the franchise tag to quarterback Joe Flacco.
If the Ravens go exclusive with Flacco, his franchise tender will be determined by taking the average of the five highest 2013 quarterback cap numbers at the time the tag is used. Before Monday, the five were: $21.55 million for Brady; $20.82 million for Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford; $20.35 million for Giants quarterback Eli Manning; $20 million for Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning; and $19.6 million for Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.
Brady has gone from No. 1 to off the list, which (as Albert Breer of NFL Network pointed out recently) nudges Saints quarterback Drew Brees from the on-deck circle with his cap number of $17.4 million.
Previously, the exclusive tag would have cost the Ravens $20.464 million under the cap for 2013. With Brady replaced by Brees, the number falls to $19.634. That’s a savings of more than $800,000.
Of course, it likely won’t matter, since the Ravens seem to be poised to apply the non-exclusive franchise tag and to hope Flacco will give them a chance to match any offers made before an offer sheet is signed. Still, if a few more of those big-ticket quarterback cap numbers fall from the top five, there’s a point at which the Ravens could opt for certainty — especially since Flacco’s cap number would remain the non-exclusive number of $14.6 million through April 19, giving them extra time to clear sufficient cap space.
So, basically, the Pats did the Ravens an $800,000 favor by not waiting a week to do the deal with Brady.

It won't matter. If Flacco gets tagged at all, it'd just be to buy more time to get a deal done. No way in hell they use the non-exclusive tag, and if they ended up using the exclusive at any amount it'd be harder to sign all the guys they want to keep than to just work a new deal.

I think what's important about this happening in regard to Flacco is to remind people how these deals really work... especially for QBs. They get a big signing bonus (guaranteed money) and a deal that averages a high amount, but the money is broken up so that you can sign other guys. Deals are backloaded in some way, and then as you near the end of the deal either a new deal is reworked if you want to keep the guy and need to free up money to sign other players, or the guy is traded/released before he becomes a huge cap hit. This is nothing new. I wouldn't even say it's great of Brady to do it... it's the business of the NFL.

Steelers plan to restructure Ben Roethlisberger's contract to create cap space this year but increase over the next 2 years:

Lawrence Timmons' contract will be restructured also:
