Building a Better NCAA Football 12
NCAA Football 11 gave thousands of eager fans the first quality HD college football experience during this generation of consoles. But now with January already upon us, and NCAA 12 deep into development, it is only a matter of time until the NCAA Football 12 details start emerging. January is also the month that I begin my coverage of the newest NCAA game.

This first article will focus on some of the things NCAA 11 did extremely well, as well as the areas that still need improvement in order to push the game to the next level.

It's All in the Details

NCAA 11 did a serviceable job of finally returning in-game college atmosphere to NCAA 06 levels. NCAA 12 needs to push the envelope in terms of presentation and small in-game details. I'm talking about adding the few remaining details that were present in the last generation of NCAA games -- the return of bowl patches, eye black, interactive goal pylons, pregame predictions, coach cut scenes and dreads -- while adding in a College Gameday feature, complete with highlights in between quarters like in NBA 2K11.

On top of these additions, NCAA 12 needs updated stat banners and ESPN overlays while within a game. ESPN and ABC have become the name in college football, and this is the year that the NCAA franchise needs to fully implement the presentation we see on the tube any given Saturday. If the now-defunct NCAA Basketball franchise was able to do this, there are no excuses for the growing NCAA Football franchise to leave out such a critical aspect of presentation.

Remember the Heisman Winner?

If there is one issue with NCAA 11 that has unified the OS forums, it undoubtedly has to be the lack of scrambling logic by CPU quarterbacks. This issue highlights one of NCAA 11's biggest weaknesses: the lack of player profiles. While appearing on a recent version of the OS Radio Show with yours truly and Chris Sanner, NCAA developer Ben Haumiller mentioned that the NCAA licensing prohibited the team from integrating actual player profiles into the game (see: Auburn QB #2).

While this is completely understandable, especially because of the pending lawsuits from former college athletes, it still does not excuse the fact that CPU players just do not seem to play to their strengths in NCAA 11. If I am facing off against a team with a 6-foot-2, 250-pound featured back, I expect to get pounded by this team all day long. The same goes if I am facing off against a team with a dual-threat QB who has a 98 speed rating. I should be dreading defending such a player the same way teams that faced Auburn and Michigan feared their respective quarterbacks.

Good luck planning for QB #12.

NCAA 11 did a marvelous job when it came to replicating team-specific offensive sets, but the problem was that when facing the CPU, the CPU-controlled teams never seemed quite aware of what their individual strengths were. This is not to say that playing NCAA 11 against the CPU did not provide a suitable challenge, it's just that on offense the AI did not run a system as efficiently and realistically as teams do in real life. The issue was made even worse when playing CPU teams that ran the spread or shotgun-based offenses -- getting the CPU to establish an effective run game was downright impossible sans major slider tweaks.

For NCAA 12 I would like to see an emphasis on the offenses run by the CPU, especially with teams that run the spread and have dual-threat quarterbacks. For too long has defense in the NCAA series taken a backseat to offense. This is the year where the CPU needs to keep defensive gurus on their toes. How nice would it be to finally go into a week in Dynasty mode, know you are facing the next Michael Vick, and actually have to make personnel adjustments both pregame and in-game to give your school a chance at victory?

One of the biggest complaints I hear from people on a yearly basis regarding playing defense in football games is that the process is just plain boring. But if you actually had to engage in a defensive chess match against the CPU, would that be reason enough to stop using the Super Sim feature while on the defensive side of the ball? The incentive and feeling of accomplishment gained by devising a top-tier defensive game plan against an explosive offense would be second to none in my opinion.

Tune in the Fun

Tuning updates in NCAA 11 sounded like a can't-miss idea when they were announced shortly after the game was released -- they work really well in the NHL series, after all. Unfortunately, every time one of these tuners was implemented, another aspect of the game completely unrelated to a tuned issue began to suffer. Add this to the fact that some of the tuners were dependent on a game patch being installed (the dirty jersey/dynasty progression patch), and you have a recipe for disaster, especially when users are not given a way to switch back to previous tuning updates without deleting a core gameplay improvement. Simply put, NCAA 12 needs to learn a lesson from EA's own NHL series and rework the way patches and tuning sets are implemented.

Yes, football can learn from hockey.

My fondest memories of NCAA 11 occurred before the first tuner set was released. In fact, I would even go as far as to say that the first tuner set broke the game, nerfing the CPU running game, adding a devastating pump-fake glitch, and seemingly lowering some of the game's overall blocking logic. Others were pleased with the additions in each successive tuner set, and more power to them. The point is that if tuners are going to be the new standard of updating NCAA Football, then there has to be some flexibility to allow users to pick and choose the tuner set that best suits their game style.

Time to Restart the Program

Yes, Dynasty mode has been good times during the last 10-plus years, but it is now officially time for a change. Before NCAA 11 was released last year, EA sent out a survey asking gamers what new features they would like to see implemented into the series. One of the options given was called Athletic Director Mode, which included the ability to build your own stadium. A completely new approach to Dynasty mode is exactly what NCAA's deepest feature needs right now.

This menu is just not as exciting as it used to be.

I like the idea of AD mode, but I feel that a comprehensive Coach mode would be better for the long-term health of the franchise. Imagine building your coach from scratch and then taking a job from a pool of lower-tiered schools. After each game you would have to answer questions from the press, which would allow you to establish your personality type. This personality would begin to shape how you are viewed by potential recruits, and by your AD. Players could have academic troubles -- or get free tattoos -- and the press would grill you on these issues as well.

You would also be given create-a-play tools so you could develop your own offensive schemes and gadget plays. Depending on your coaching strategy and personality type, you would develop in-game dynamic rivalries with other coaches and programs. Add in a coaching carousel and some all-time challenges, like winning more games than Joe Pa, and you have got a surefire winner in my eyes.

Avoid the Madden 11 Effect

Madden 10 was one of the biggest leaps in terms of gameplay and features when compared to Madden 09. So when the masses began realizing that Madden 11 was not the year-to-year lap that Madden 10 was, people were understandably disappointed. NCAA 12 has to avoid falling into this same trap, and the team must continue to push the franchise forward in big ways. With an ever-changing sports gaming climate, consumers being able to see a quantitative year-to-year improvement is critical to increased sales, especially for a franchise that does not carry the NFL license.

In addition, the gameplay in many of today's sports games, NCAA included, does not match up with the gameplay found in titles from the previous generation. It's becoming extremely difficult for me to believe that the presentation and gameplay we are experiencing now are still not on par with what we were playing over five years ago. No more excuses, it's time for the HD generation of sports titles to finally surpass the games of yesteryear.

NCAA 12 will be released in just seven months, and for dedicated fans of the series, excitement levels are about to peak. As always, Operation Sports will be bringing you any and all NCAA Football 12 news as it breaks, so be sure to check back in the coming weeks.

What are your hopes for NCAA Football 12 at this point? Feel free to add your wish lists below.

Exactly! AND...the reason I'm migrating to Madden next year. I'm tired of losing 1 game and getting shipped off to the "whatever meaningless" bowl. I set up my sliders to be challenging, so I always lose a game or two. I need a playoff for my style of play.

First off, let me say that I'm a big fan of NCAA 11. I've had the game since launch and 6 months later am still playing it. I feel like it's the best football game we've had this generation, Madden included.

Obviously there are things we'd all like to see improved/implemented/changed going into NCAA 12 and the article does a good job stating some of the ones most frequently discussed on these boards.

For me, the biggies are:

-Fix the QB ratings so we can actually have "dual-threat" quarterbacks.
-To do that, we'll also need to see better blocking out of the spread and better AI by both the QB and RB.

-Improve zone defense AI for both the Human and CPU.

-Reduce the leaping ability of DL/LB, especially on the CPU side. This wasn't an issue until the patches/tuners came out.

-As the article mentioned, give us the option to choose which Tuner Set we want to use.

-Bowl patches

-Dreads (for you, ODogg!)

-Improved commentary

-Pre-game, halftime and post-game show

-Improve in-game stats layout

I'm sure there's more but that starts getting into nit-picking territory.

NCAA 11 took a lot of positive steps forward. I'm hopeful the development crew will continue to build on this now solid foundation.

I thing that I like about NCAA football dynasty is the ability to change teams after awhile. In madden your stuck with the same team and after awhile you want to change it up and you cant.

The one game that got this correct was 2k's College Hoops. You got to create your own coach similar to create a player mode, but with less options. Then you had to pick a bottom tier team to build up your coach's profile and after two years you could sign with a new team. Depending on how well you did the better teams you did. It usually took 4 years to get to a top tier team, 2 with a low tier and 2 with a mid tier team and then you could sign with a top tier team. Then it would usually take longer to get to the team you really wanted. Along the way your coach would be improving his recruiting, scouting, defensive, offensive, etc skills. If this was implemented into NCAA Footballs it would just make it last longer and be for fun.

I miss the Home Field Advantage. Remember the noise meter? The shaking screen? Now you hear Nessler yell about how loud the crowd is, but you can barely hear them. I want some of that atmosphere back. Maybe not exactly how it was, but if the crowd is supposed to be jacked up I want them to sounds it. If I bring a true freshman QB into the Swamp, I want my controller to have my hands shaking as bad as his should be.

And maybe offset that with some sort of a clutch rating for players. Low ratings mean you're guy is going to misread plays or blow assignments. Higher ratings mean your guys are going to step up and perform no matter where they're playing.

Agreed. That, improved atmosphere, and Improved Dynasty and RTG and NCAA 12 will be a elite(probably best) game

Yeah it would be cool if you had to pick your offensive, defensive and special teams coordinators. And each one would be giving a letter grade in the following categories:

Offense
Defense
Special Teams
Teaching

And what they were rated in those categories would determine how fast your players progressed during the course of the year.

I like that. Similar to College Hoops.

I think they need to let us edit ratings in franchise mode with some sort of robust editor that will allow us to mass edit ratings and such. For instance, mass edit all QB's ball carrier vision in order to increase it by 30%. Something like that.

I would like a letter grade for Recruiting as well.

College Hoops 2K8 remains the best College game in any sport.

They have the college atmosphere captured perfectly, and their dynasty mode is still the best of any sports game this generation.

The NCAA team should all buy copies of that game, play it for a week and take some notes.

# 31 stoncold32 @ 01/13/11 05:48 PM
You guys have said alot of the main stuff.

But I will add some little things: Mouthpieces.

Why do we still not have them when these were in NCAA '04 for Ps2...

Also, I still want to have the cheerleaders have the school name/logo on their uniforms, also like the old Ps2 versions.

This game is undoubtedly one of the greats of this series and with some tweaking NCAA '12 can be the best ever.

# 32 AndyP @ 01/13/11 05:55 PM
I'm not big on that coach answering questions stuff, I always just end up skipping through that stuff. I prefer the realistic dynasty mode - as opposed to the fictional stadium creation/fictional coach stuff. On the presentation stuff I agree however. I'd like to see dynasty mode feature a weekly show that is far more dynamic than that offered in Madden - College Gameday, with Corso wearing the mascot head or helmet. As well as improvements to the ESPN presentation - stuff like keys to the game and featured players with their stats and bio pre-game - I'd like to see primetime ABC games and for those games that aren't the biggest games, it would be cool if they were on ESPNU. I used to love the old-gen camera shake - it really added to the feeling that the atmosphere was building

# 33 JizzyJo @ 01/13/11 06:09 PM
dude, what you wrote is exactly what i want in dynasty!
screw the AD mode, that would get old just like it did in madden. and who wants to be an AD??? being a coach would be wayyyy more fun. i want a COACH DYNASTY!!!! i want to hav to work my way up to the powerhouse schools like florida and texas. i want to start at lower teir school and take job offers. even starting as a coordinator would even be cool. basically everything that you said about the coaching dynasty is what ive been wanting for a while and i would love NCAA football even more if it had this feature. i also think you should have the option to start a dynasty with whatever team you want as well. but i just REALLY REALLY want everything you described in that dynasty section. coaching carousel would be amazing. i just want to feel like im an actual coach when i start a dynasty.
so pretty much agreed with everything you said on here. hopefully EA reads this and takes your advice!
PLEASE EA, COACHING DYNASTY!

I'm more concerned about the career mode, I can't remember what it's called. It has so much potential, but it's really sucked the past few years, IMO.

The last thing i would like to see is add double hitting like when if some one is getting wraped up then someone else can come detroy him. thats all
One thing I can say is, no. Granted, I may not be "everybody" when it comes to those things as I rarely create a player, and even more rarely edit anything as far as roster goes. I adjust my depth chart, use the formation subs, recruit and play. Every so often I will change my schedule to get rid of a FCS game.

I understand why these things are wanted, it creates an experience that you can immerse yourself in. However, I never find myself wishing shoulder pads came out of jerseys, or watching a guy pull his socks up. Now that I think of it, yeah, it'd be cool. But at what cost? There are other things that need to be fixed/added/subtracted that more directly affect gameplay/dynasty/RTG.

See my post on this thread's first page to see what I would like to be fixed/added. But one thing I forgot to mention in that post is subtractions, specifically Season Showdown and Road to Glory. SS is a ridiculous thing that penalizes unfairly while contributing nothing (or very little) to the average, hardcore player. RTG has been broken for so long, I think it's just time to scrap it all together. If EA decides to bring it back in '13 or after, with drastic changes (like competent play calling) I may give it another shot.

And, to not sound like a complete bag as far as customizing things go, I wouldn't mind a universal editor to give everyone high socks, same shoes, etc. I've created maybe three prospects this year, and don't change anything other than height, weight and attributes. The only thing I change in roster edit is numbers if I switch a position (I like uniformity).

Coaching carousel. I could not stop playing dynasty mode in College Hoops 2K8 because of the coaching carousel.

Agreed along with the dreads have players with long hair(example A.J Hawk)

Let me start by saying, I love the game but it is flawed. Here are a few of my suggestions.

1. Whatever Madden did to make D-line play better in the last patch, add that plus one.

2. Make strength and weight matter. With that you would have to make players heavier so if you have a fast pass rusher a powerful lineman doesn't automatically push him to the ground.

3. Make the kick go on a time count with better kickers getting more time. Say you have a 99 rated kicker, you should get, let's say, 10 seconds to adjust the arrow but if you have a 55 rated kicker, you should only get 5 seconds to adjust the arrow and the ball should be snapped at :00.

4. Awareness should mean more than it does, as far as assignments and just being in the right place at the right time.

Just some thoughts: I like the idea of an AD Mode. I would like more presentation but I feel like gameplay is more important. Facemasks are big to me, get all of them in. I know there are always surprise teams (Auburn this year) with players that over achieve (Nick Fairley), just do more homework. Uniforms have been patched in before, don't make us pay just give them to us (Mich St unis were wrong, no black out for Wash, Oregons unis were wrong colors, etc) I know it is minor, but he pay, hook us up!

# 39 xirdneh132 @ 01/13/11 08:05 PM
The one thing I really want is to be able to edit player ratings whenever I want. I understand not allowing us to do it online (I never play online) but for offline games I should be able to edit their ratings whenever i want and not just be able to edit before I go into a dynasty. Some players rise throughout the year and some fall and this will also fix problems of recruits coming in too high or too low, depending on your preference.

# 40 HoardKing @ 01/13/11 08:19 PM
1. Eye Black and Dreads
2.Coach Mode where start off as a position coach and work your way up based on players performance.
3.AD mode where u have to handle the press, players actions, school upgrdes, sanctions, violations , and basically the overall direction of the program ie MIami, Notre Dame or some in between.
4. Bring in some kind of presentation . Add an award show at the end of the year.Pre,Halftime, and Post-Game shows. Basically add College Gameday and add some kind of end of the week highlight show.
5. Recruiting- This has become a thing of its own in real life. Have an High Shool All-American game. Have
the top recruits do like on espn and pick from three hats.Have a recruiting show on signig day.
6. Bring back the Senior All Star Game
7.Lose the mascot Mashupits a waste of space.
8. Medical Redshirts honestly EA should of had this years ago.
9. Sanctions- You should be able to go outside the box to get that top recruit, but if u get caught u should pay the price.
10. Coaching Carousel
11. Have the ability to upgrade stadium and facilities.
12.Mouth Pieces
Just a few thoughts.
