NBA 2K17 News Post

I had the chance to visit the studios at 2K this week and get an advance sneak peak of NBA 2K17. For full disclosure the trip was paid for entirely by the folks at 2K.

The first thing I want to tell you about NBA 2K17? It has nothing to do with the game itself directly, and everything to do with the people who work on this game year-round.

The wonderful folks at 2K Games, and specifically the team members I met in San Francisco on Tuesday afternoon -- Ronnie, Jeff Thompson, Erick Boenisch, Mike Wang, Ryan Peters, Chris, Czar, and many others -- are folks who are incredibly passsionate about their craft and the game they are producing. They were very welcoming and displayed a lot of that passion while describing what NBA 2K17 is bringing to consoles this year.

While I plan to dive a lot deeper into the topics I'll share below in the coming days, I wanted to at least get some of the nitty gritty out for folks to see and to begin discussing...

"Custom jump shots are back for '17. Select multiple upper body and lower body presets to create an unlimited number of unique shooting profiles for your players." I'm gonna go into 2K16 and find some good jumpers to use for my player. I think we will see some really funky looking jumpshots in the Park lol. Missed this so much. It sounds like it will be more than timing, base and form.
"Defensive skills will also matter, such as beating a guy to the spot, reacting to the ball." Hmm. Will we be able to draw charges again if we beat the offensive player to the spot?

- Dynamic Rule Changes sound fun, hopefully there is an option to turn it off or override decisions.

- CBA changes add another element to MyLeague.

- Can't wait to dive into Advanced Rotations to see how that works.

- Ability to edit entire draft class on one screen and not player-by-player. I wonder what that means.

- 2KU sounds like a fun engaging tutorial.

- Curious to see how Smart Coach works.
Good thinking !!!

Is that those 02 Kings were scrapped ?? They lost the rights to CWebb ?? I don't remember ?

This is an absolute ****ing gamechanger if it works right. For example, the Wizards always play John Wall, the entire first and third quarter and sit him for the first 4-6 minutes of the second and fourth.

It was impossible to replicate that in 2k16. Now it seems possible.
Yes. I also hope this means the computer will start the appropriate players. For example the suns would bring Brandon Knight or Bledsoe off the bench because their primary position is both PG. That secondary position needs to factor into starting lineups more. Even a third position (Rarely used/comes into play) for some players.

Looking forward to learning a LOT more about this, probably next week. I'm assuming after Mike's blog, Czar and OG will have blogs again:

Quote:
  • New team schemes
  • New freelance offenses (30 unique in 2K17)
  • New transition offenses and defenses
  • Improved (new?) defensive AI
  • Positional mismatches--different coaches have different aggressiveness in attacking mismatches, for instance.
  • Formation recognition--defensive help assignments will change and offenses will be more aware than ever.
  • Don't let up--offenses are measuring offensive efficiency to track the opposition, and difficultly level matters for this sort of thing.
  • On the fly team individual ACE packages
  • New dynamic plays and quick plays
  • Coaching intangibles
  • Extend the pressure, and you can control the help (literally assign who you want to press, etc.)
  • Switching on-the-fly for Pro AM

No mention of authentic net sounds and why the arena specific lighting isn't mentionned anymore ? I wonder if it wasn't true.

It was a huge issue as you progress through league years, because generated/created players end up with zones that really make no sense for their ratings/positions. I mean, why have lumbering bigs with F rating in mid and 3 get red zones out there on the perimeter? Or slashing offensive wings with all blue around the rim?

I'm a little confused so does 2k have some sort of global editing process with the rosters and created draft classes, I cant even fathom how all this can be done on one screen without going player to player.

As a MyLeague guy this got me super excited. The CBA expiring and rule changes would be crazy!

A lot to chew on here, but these jumped out at me:

Quote:
  • Dynamic uniform updates.
  • Offseason trading that takes into account many pending factors for a team such as free agency plans, who the team plans to draft, etc.
Dynamic uniform updates mean that I won't be penalized for starting a MyLeague on Day 1 when certain uniforms won't be unlocked till Christmas.

I'm hoping this also means that we can have multiple created uniforms for a team rather than just two -- they didn't address whether expansion teams can have more than two uniforms, but this gives me hope that it's at least possible.

Offseason trading (like, legit offseason trading and not the ghettoed version I had to do at the end of the offseason at training camp time) is BIG -- a feature long since missing. I hope they completely reorganized the order of events in the offseason because it just didn't make sense in 2K16.

Thanks for the comments and feedback, guys! I will try and get to all questions here and on Twitter (@mikelowe_OS). I do have a day job I must attend to as well, so please be patient!

Holy hell!! Damn! I honestly don't know what so say. As a ML fan I just don't know what to say. This is a lot to digest. Not seeing anything about NBDL/Euroleague is a bit of a bummer but that is literally the only thing and they more than made up for it, to me at least. I'll just run another Euro ML and now with the abiility to change rules it should be more authentic. Also curious about the wording "commentator". Like is Shaq, Kenny and Ernie only doing their show or will they like be calling games now too? I really want them to flesh out the pre, post and especially halftime show some.

My biggest question is surrounding this feature:

Dynamic rule changes. For instance, league meetings will occur during the offseason. An extreme example would be the league voting on using a sudden death OT rule change--first bucket wins. Extreme cases such as this are very rare, we were told. More common would be changes to the shot clock timer, back clock timer, etc.
Eventually, every few years, your league's CBA will eventually expire, and then you'll see big changes to the finances within your league. This is a quite unique feature, and something typically only seen in rare sport text simulations such as Out of the Park Baseball's "random league evolution."

Don't get my wrong, it sounds amazing. But I'm just wondering if we can override those changes or make the changes ourselves. I suppose if you control every team you probably vote for every team?

I can think of a couple of ways. For example:
  • set %'s of players by position as proportion of draft class
  • set relative strength of each position by draft class
  • Screens of players (by position?) that allow you to edit across the screen like a spreadsheet for attributes/tendencies/etc. without entering an individual player edit screen
There are other possibilities, but these are options. You can get more granular on a player based level, but with this kind of architecture, you could create classes that are stronger, weaker, deeper at some positions, more athletic, more skilled, more youth & potential versus polish and lower risk. And so on.

Yeah, no mention of D-league or draft & stash, but that doesn't mean it's not there in some form. Maybe not playable, but it could be there in some fashion.

I'm holding out hope that there will be a blog to speak more on this. Maybe even a video, since that'll tell us more than a blog would.

Im just spit balling here, but im thinking that instead of clicking on each individual player and pressing edit player, you can access all attributes, accesories, etc. for each player from the roster or draft class page. But i dont know, if thats the case it might make the page too bulky.

Possibly something like making a draft class strong or weak, guard heavy or big man heavy, Strong 3 point shooting class, etc.
Thats the only thing I can think of

So is Kenny Smith out?

Quote:
NBA 2K17 now has a total of 11 commentators. Some are familiar faces -- such as Kevin Harlan, Greg Anthony, Shaq and Ernie -- while others are new, including Brent Berry, Steve Smith, Doris Burke, Chris Webber, and David Aldridge. The commentary team is based geographically, so depending on which arena you're playing in, you'll hear from different commentary teams.
