NBA 2K17 News Post

I had the chance to visit the studios at 2K this week and get an advance sneak peak of NBA 2K17. For full disclosure the trip was paid for entirely by the folks at 2K.

The first thing I want to tell you about NBA 2K17? It has nothing to do with the game itself directly, and everything to do with the people who work on this game year-round.

The wonderful folks at 2K Games, and specifically the team members I met in San Francisco on Tuesday afternoon -- Ronnie, Jeff Thompson, Erick Boenisch, Mike Wang, Ryan Peters, Chris, Czar, and many others -- are folks who are incredibly passsionate about their craft and the game they are producing. They were very welcoming and displayed a lot of that passion while describing what NBA 2K17 is bringing to consoles this year.

While I plan to dive a lot deeper into the topics I'll share below in the coming days, I wanted to at least get some of the nitty gritty out for folks to see and to begin discussing...

"Will earn Park revenue by playing ProAM"

Did he mean actual revenue... Or rep?

I doubt it was a lie because they showed pictures last year of players having their bodies scanned. My guess is that bodies were scanned but not implemented in the way we wanted and expected. Perhaps they only scanned a handful of bodies and just used those body types as the standard models for every player.

2k used 7 body types. Someone on Reddit had a thread of the body types 2k uses and examples of what players had what body.

Just an amazing list of improvements! For me though, the "Play Today" (or whatever its called) in myLEAGUE is a total game-changer! I usually don't receive my annual copy until Christmastime, so the fact that I can start my franchise to date with the correct standings AND accurate player stats is ridiculous!!

This will save me tons of tedious hours carefully simulating games until my franchise is caught up with the current NBA season. I'm beyond excited!

I've seen this already. What I am saying is that maybe they only scanned 7 different player's/people's bodies and used those scans to create these seven body types. Probably unlikely though.

But the other theory around the board is that the body scams were used just to get skin details such as tattoos, markongs, and scars on the body. I believe there was a screen shot of Durant where you could see a scar on his left shoulder but it is clear that his actual body shape and size is imaccurate.

The latter seems to be true. Although it doesn't really matter as long as it looks good when we play.

Re. custom shots. We can pick shot and base now. How will it be different? Am I missing something?

That's 2K16.

WiSports haha man that is 2K16. He is just giving an impressions over a proam video from 2K16. He was one of the teamup community guys

Now back to this list sheesh. I think this is the most feature packed sports game I have seen in one year. I don't think we can compare this feature list to any sports game. If 85%-90% of this works after a patch or two well they still overachieved on a shorter development cycle in my eyes. This is without even going in depth on the MyCareer which I don't even play .

The game play improvements alone that they added were wishlist items for me for at least two years

  • Rebounding tap outs and tips live ball on rebounding yes
  • Better version of live ball across the board
  • Physics everywhere
This game is so damn deep. I can't even pick out one thing but the part about them letting users with actual show and all the control in your hand with make it feel that much better when you execute on offense

Not trying to be cantankerous, but I'm not sure yet. I like what I see and if it was just a matter of putting down $70, I'd probably take that leap. But I haven't even jumped up to next-gen yet. If and when that day comes about, 2K will probably be one of my first purchases. In the meantime, I still enjoy keeping an ear to the ground and seeing where the franchise is going.

Yeahhh I know. Literally just planned on writing that one sentence then bam, five paragraphs happened. Being concise is a constant battle.

Sure, was just curious what you were up to. Do you still play older 2K's ?

I actually went through a phase a few weeks ago where I played, like, five or six classic team games on NBA 2K12, haha. Also, I played my younger brothers' 2K16 a few times when I visited. Had a ton of fun with the create-a-team in my limited time. I could see myself getting lost in that stuff.

A lot of these improvements sound good. Hope trade logic, draft logic, and free agency signings by AI-controlled teams has been vastly improved. Hope improvements were made with the auto-generated draft classes as well.

Thank you for the clarification! That's an awesome addition to Pro-Am, IMO.

Loving all the news so far, i do hole however that for MyLeague we now have an option to play with just 1 team and be able to quit that team and take control of another without having to play with all the teams.

Also wonder if we have jersey control, as in can we unretire jerseys ? Like if I relocate and totally rebrand a team i would like to have the retired jerseys unretired and start fresh.

Just some minor things i been asking for the past couple years.

But overall loving the news and looking forward to the game, let the countdown begin.

Great sequence there. Offensively and defensively. Hopefully that defender was AI controlled. If so, looks like they eliminated the magnetic/suction defense. Also, great help on the dribble drive.

Could this be the year it all comes together...

Damn, I wonder who the last 2 commentators are. A lot of people find him annoying but I would love it if Reggie Miller is one of them.
