NBA 2K17 News Post

I had the chance to visit the studios at 2K this week and get an advance sneak peak of NBA 2K17. For full disclosure the trip was paid for entirely by the folks at 2K.

The first thing I want to tell you about NBA 2K17? It has nothing to do with the game itself directly, and everything to do with the people who work on this game year-round.

The wonderful folks at 2K Games, and specifically the team members I met in San Francisco on Tuesday afternoon -- Ronnie, Jeff Thompson, Erick Boenisch, Mike Wang, Ryan Peters, Chris, Czar, and many others -- are folks who are incredibly passsionate about their craft and the game they are producing. They were very welcoming and displayed a lot of that passion while describing what NBA 2K17 is bringing to consoles this year.

While I plan to dive a lot deeper into the topics I'll share below in the coming days, I wanted to at least get some of the nitty gritty out for folks to see and to begin discussing...

The commentary teams, if it is teams in different cities, is something I asked for to keep game fresh and make it feel real. not every game is a national game

Dynamic rules and dynamic expansion were particularly intriguing, as I'd never even brainstormed such possibilities before.

In other categories, I really liked the sound of the shoe game, especially the inclusion of Pennys and Shaqs, both of which make me wonder what other old school shoes may have made the cut (not holding my breath though).

Also loved the idea of custom audio. Of course, the real question will be whether those effects kick in at the right moments or whether the weird glitches remain (i.e. a home team dunk leading to silence in the midst of a big run).

Lastly, I wasn't really excited about the idea of multiple commentary teams when it was announced the other day (seemed a bit excessive to have multiple national broadcast teams) but I admit today that I began coming around. It should keep the game pretty fresh, no?

I will say, I wish I could have read about some classic team news, but I wasn't holding my breath on that either. I'd love new teams, though I'm actually super pleased to have as many as we do. More than anything else, I wish those teams could be properly authenticated (better faces, more signature moves, dunks, dribbles, layups, etc.).
Do you plan on getting it Vdusen04 ? Did you upgrade yet ?

I wonder if the pre-game shootaround is user controlled because they did mention a user controlled shootaround for players waiting to play in Pro-am so I'm optimistic.

Ton of great news and a lot to be excited about. One thing we haven't heard about is the magnetic/warping/telepathic AI defense that made it near impossible to beat the defender off the dribble...

Really looking forward to the developer blogs. I hope this is a point of emphasis.

Bottom line is, art (and art accuracy) is at the bottom of 2K's priority list.

This year it looks like they took out muscle tone in players arms. Why?

Look at Madden. They have all different size body types. The arms have nice definition. And there's a LOT more going on during gameplay than in NBA 2K.

I'm tired of excuses.
Maybe just a matter of different priorities? On the flip side have you ever seen a madden game feature as many improvements and new features in a one year cycle that we are seeing in 2k17?

I'll say this though, come next year they shouldnt have any excuses on the art side. I'm not expecting all of these new features to work to perfection so next year I'd be fine if they just further refine these features and then shift focus on nailing the art side of things.

Good question. My guess is that they'll have to have this to some extent in order to initiate contact however they seem to be forcing the issue of "you control everything you see" so maybe the magnetic warping will be limited if not completely eliminate.

I love all that there saying, if it all works right. I wish Erick Boenisch would have said that they worked on getting simulation stats right, so you MyLeague/GM/ and even your MyPlayer for that matter, didnt have screwed up league stats. Some of this has to do with very poorly done tendencies for players, and if the guy who does ratings/tendencies for them was more accurate the stats would be closer to accurate, as the roster editors found out here. But some of it is just a issue that has to be fixed under the hood by the devs. I know Erick has a passion for those Association modes, you can tell by listening to him talk, so I hope he look into this issue thats been there for every, last year was improved, but still needs work to be right.

I'm tired of excuses.

For one, Madden only has like 5 -10 canned body types that they use for all players. Two most players in the NBA are not muscular cut plus the 2K team does body scans of a lot of the players, does Madden do body scans? Three, you wanna talk about removal of headbands when Madden does not even have mouth pieces in the game! Four don't ever compare an inferior piece of software such as Madden to NBA 2K.

Obviously, it was never fully explained to us what they were "body scanning," but it is clear as day that they were scanning tattoos and scars on players.

Awesome news! Can anyone confirm if all the offline myleague features is in the online version or is the online a slimmed down version?

So hyped for this game man. The editing is going to be of the chain. & When it says "Easier roster/draft class editing -- can now edit an entire roster at once on one screen, not player by player" does that mean now when we fix there signatures & jumpshots its way easier now? Cause if so than thats even better for us who fix all the sigs & jumpshots & the lengths of there body. Will be faster for us

Hasn't it been established that body scans were essential used for tattoos and scars? Or that's the most logical conclusion people on this board have come to.

I doubt it was a lie because they showed pictures last year of players having their bodies scanned. My guess is that bodies were scanned but not implemented in the way we wanted and expected. Perhaps they only scanned a handful of bodies and just used those body types as the standard models for every player.

I really was disappointed in 2k last year (and I'm still hoping with all the new features and revised features that transition D and big man D are far improved) and honestly played it less than any time in the past 11 years since I first switched over from Live.

That said, the things mentioned for offline franchise (which I play almost exclusively) sound AMAZING if they work properly. These are some of the biggest changes in this mode I've ever seen. And frankly they have me excited to get the game after I was lukewarm and told my wife just to get it for me for xmas so I could play some more of The Show.

Add in the rotation changes (which was/is a BIG issue for me) and 2k really has me sold on buying this game ASAP. Now I just have to sell the wife on it too (or simply sell the wife
