NHL 16 News Post

Hey guys,

So Sean Ramjagsingh (Rammer to most of you) has asked openly on Twitter for feedback on the latest tuner, and what better place than here for him to get constructive feedback to use? So here is what I want to do:

Post your feedback on the new tuner. But there are a few guidelines.

Post whether you commenting on offline or online gameplay

Post if you have altered sliders (for offline)

Post how many games you have played with the new tuner

Post constructively

This way we can give accurate and meaningful feedback. Post videos if you'd like, but again - keep it constructive.

Here are the tuner notes (Thanks Jake19ny!):

SEPT 28 - TUNER

Gameplay
  • Improved poke collisions to address issues where a puck would be dislodged even when the puck or puck carriers stick were not contacted.
  • Increased speed of player controlled goalie when using precision motion.
  • Increased the pass error for the lowest pass accuracy slider settings.
  • Tuned down agility and ability to generate speed when turning tightly with protect puck.
  • Lessened the effect of the speed penalty on the puck carrier slightly when stickhandling a puck.
OTP/EASHL only
  • Turned down effectiveness of AI players in online faceoffs.
  • Goalie will commit more towards the shooter/puck side of the ice to guard against short side shots.
  • Lowered the threshold to which a player is able to receive/pick up a puck cleanly.
UPDATE: (9/29) We have removed “Increased the likelihood to trip a player when a pokecheck goes into the opponents skates or legs.” after many players have stated that it resulted in too many tripping penalties.

IMO you can make Pro play tough without the boost more organic and you might even see a good amount of penalties too this year as its what I went with last night but its just not the same as that pre 9/28 tuner .

Well booting up a non tuner update game impressions coming soon .

So I deleted my profile and played 3 games with default pro, no tuner. Only change I made was to turn off manual passing. The games played quite good. Even saw some animations I hadn't seen before. CPU took a slashing penalty and my stick actually broke because of it. Don't recall seeing that before.
It even seems as though each line played more towards their setting (overload, behind the net etc) and the CPU played much better positional D on their penalty kill than I ever remember seeing.

Just played an excellent game on the default out of the box tuner. I did tweak my sliders quite a bit and I'm enjoying the game again. I will try a new tuner if the consensus is that it is good but as of now I can come down off the ledge because if need be I can play moving forward on default.

I play 10 minute periods which I know most think is too long. There were about 50 face offs because along with regular stoppage there were CPU offsides, icings, and pucks leaving the rink. The CPU dumped and chased as well as dumped for line changes. More importantly there were a good amount of penalties. I had 5 powerplays CPU had 6. I saw tripping, hooking, charging, interference, and a double minor high stick.

Sucks for the XBOX one peeps who can't delete just the profile and play default out of the box tuner

It's worth it to delete the entire game data in the game hub and start from scratch....I mean the accurate rosters aren't even out yet so it's def worth it...im just doing the playoffs and international tournaments until they come out.

I'm using default rosters...if I go online to get the rosters, I won't download the game tuner automatically right?

I've played about 10 EASHL games since the update as a grinder center and it's nice to finally be able to beat the CPU center consistently on faceoffs.

Before, I struggled to win 50% of draws against the AI, and I would often have games where the other team's human center would intentionally quit so that the AI could replace him.

But after the patch, human centers are always preferable to AI centers.

Now if we can just get the same to hold true of human goalies vs. AI goalie, then this mode will be well balanced.

I've played 5 games this morning with this newest tuner update. Now, for record, I posted how much I loved the 28th tuner update. The game played hockey and I felt that if I gave up a goal, the AI deserved it.

The 5 games this morning have been so frustrating. Even though I won 3 of them, they weren't fun games at all.

Every loose puck battle goes to the AI. They swarm me if I get a pass in the slot, like 3 or 4 guys will converge in a matter of milliseconds such that, if I try to shoot, they block it, try to dump it they block it, try to pass to the corner, they block it, pass back to the defense, the will steamroll the dman and take the puck.

They are ping pong passing all over my zone and side stepping me until they get near my goal. EVERY, rebound goes on their tape. Pin them, and they still back heel pucks to the tape for one timers.

The one that got me, was I saw my left winger with a head of steam heading to the corner, their dman was standing facing the opposite and not moving. I pass the puck to the corner, I bet you see where this is going, their guy is able to turn, start skating at warp speed, and beats my guy cleanly to the puck that was at the same spot but full head of steam.

I shut it off at that point. I don't mind losing, I like it actually, I hate feeling cheated. That AI on Hardcore All Star is a bunch of cheaters right now.

I'm gonna be patient for EA to fix this, which I am sure they will. The game play was great, which is why I bought it. I was impressed.

I'm usually not negative and this isn't really a negative post. It is just noting some things that are killing the single player experience from this newest tuner.

Same here I love the series but its obvious they brought back the boost hockey or tilted Ice to balance good vs bad players online and its the offliners that suffer .

IMO it cant be fixed like it was before the 9/28 unless they can provide separate tuners for on and offline as its just to hard to balance the two experiences .

Back to the tuner before the 9/28 string of tuners the game played organic with great physics on near allstar default and after the tuner as you mentioned regardless if I win or lose the game feels robotic offline .

Hot goalies let in bad weird goals all of a sudden and then I cant hit 10 foot passes with nobody on my guys and the worst is when my players become slow and unresponsive almost like Im skating in wet cement as the cpu glides around and all play like superstars in boost mode .

Im not saying alot of this cant be balanced by sliders but it would take alot of time and effort and theres still no in game slider saves but it would still have the feel you described so accurately above .

IMO it would still be robot hockey but it shouldnt be this way especially how the game was before 9/28 at least offline that is as its unneeded .

At this point my only option would be to totally uninstall the game and just play it offline with outdated rosters but I dont see any other choice as its really hard to play the game competitively as is for offline .

Another kinda sad thing about this latest tuner is....it seems to have really hurt the effects of the Puck control slider. Pre latest tuner, with control slider at 3, there wthere lots of loose pucks...causing play even through th NZ. Now, with it at 4, loose pucks due to contact are near totally gone. Imo, really hurting the organic feel of the game that was there.

Yes they do and you did an amazing job to set a nice base after this last tuner update affected organic play for many off liners .
So if anyone likes a reactionary fresh organic game of Hockey where anything can happen and no two games are the same I highly recommend his sliders and heres hoping if EA updates another tuner they just dont overwrite the old one .

Great slider set yet I still felt the ai cheated. No knock to your set. Which is great.

However, call me crazy, I just had a thought. What is tuner Sept 28 is 1.00, and Latest, is Sept 30. Which was brutal

I am playing a game now with the tuner set at 1.00. And I am not about to throw my controller at the cheating ai.

Can someone else that is having single player issues give this a go and see if 1.00 and latest are not the same.

Feels better for me but may be placebo effect. Not perfect, but better

Not sure on that lol but I did feel that the Latest and v100 were slightly different but as I said before who knows its probably just randomness .

And as far a Clarkies sliders go even if the ai cheats a little rears it head do to strategy changes as you said its still 100% adjustable and my player doesnt feel blocked out, slow or non responsive and I like having real interaction .

A cool thing I noticed with his was with TOA as one game I was down 3-0 but had almost a 2 to 1 advantage in toa with advantage in shot totals and then the next I was up 3-1 and the TOA was even and the cpu also outshot me 30 to 21 .
So what Im saying is the AI and the strategy adjusts pretty realistically for a hockey video game depending on the situation because when they were up big they protected a lead and when behind they got aggressive and took more chances on the forecheck and it all unfolded very naturally and not just with boosts or lack of control as the advantage .

# 135 Madwolf @ 10/05/15 12:09 AM
I do feel like the AI cheats a bit, especially on lose pucks, they always come out on top if it's a 50/50 situation, and they're amazing on rebounds in front of their goal and your own.

That being said, the outrage over the poke check penalties is incredibly mind boggling. I take about 2 penalties a game with the new system, sometimes 3. The computer also takes 1 or 2 every game. It's so refreshing, and I haven't made a penalty yet where I felt like I was cheated.

Do people really just spam the poke check button 24/7 to play defense?

# 136 NDIrishRangers78 @ 10/05/15 09:03 AM
I'm more mad about the lack of varieties in penalties I saw after that tuner, it seemed like only tripping was called....and also the cpu was devoid of using any actual hockey strategy and were like robots....playing the game with the default tuner is like night and day.

Did they fix the lack of neutral and defensive zone pressure? Can you still just skate in and take a slap shot? Deal breaker for me.

# 138 jake19ny @ 10/05/15 11:25 AM
Very odd. I'm using the default out of the box tuner and tweaked sliders. When I played my first game I had 5 PPs and the CPU had 6 PPs. then my next 4 games I saw 1 PP each game and the CPU 2 or 3. So I reset sliders to default tweaked them to where I had them, played a game and BOOM, I had 5 PPs and the CPU had 4PPs. next 2 games 1 PP for me in 2 games and 2 PPs for CPU in each game. So....I did the reset slider thing again and I had penalties called. Seems I need to reset the sliders and tweak them before every game.

This does not make a whole lot of sense but so much with this game and its tuners and sliders do not make sense and I have tested this several times and it works. Weird stuff
