Madden NFL 15 News Post

While there has some some question as to the status of the exclusivity of the Madden license, owing to the fact the last mention of the license by EA only said there were a number of years left on it with no mention of exclusivity. That was never a guarantee that the license wasn't exclusive, as EA hadn't mentioned in official documents that the license was either extended or exclusive since the initial deal -- the news of the prior extension was never fully confirmed by EA.

Expecting a different approach where EA held a pomp and circumstance parade has led to a rash of unfounded rumors that another competitor, namely 2K, was developing a football game. There was even an unfounded expectation that 2K might even debut a football title at E3.

However, the biggest news to come out of the 2K camp at E3 might have been Ronnie2K confirming that not only was 2K not working on a football game, but that the license was still exclusively owned by 'someone else.'

This isn't surprising, considering the NFL license being open for other partners would have almost certainly leaked by now by someone. The current deal's term length which has been widely speculated and rumored is that Madden still has two to three years in its current deal, pushing the game well into this new generation.

It still remains unlikely, even if the license was open, that a competitor could rise up to compete with Madden in any reasonable amount of time given the more advanced needs of today's sports gaming audience. Thus, given the license's current status, it is possible that any possible competitor wouldn't be ready for release for at least 18-24 months after the license was actually acquired by someone, which puts the most reasonable timeframe for a Madden competitor at least four to five years from now, if ever. The most likely scenario remains that EA and Madden will remain the only major NFL gaming option on big box consoles for the foreseeable future.

He said Madden sucks. Has sucked for last 10 years. Said cover vote is stupid because what's in the box is trash. He did research because he had forgotten what had happened and that 2K5 was better than anything Madden has put out even though it came out in 1995 (his words, not mine). Says EA went exclusive rather than making a better product. Problem is no competition. Hopes "the band can get back together" and make 2K5 again.

Applaud mainstream media for stepping out.

This should light a huge fire, at least it better.

But not really sure it will..I hope as well..but again I'm not sure..in the mean time it will be spun as he is 2K fan boy..etc..I have learn to deal with Madden being Madden..but any continued positive change for the future is nice..but maybe just maybe with "pro football" writer putting his two cents in it will help us all...have to say I expected a lot more peopling commenting on this..on both sides of the aisle

I've been playing a lot of 2K5 lately, and 2k5 still does Wide Receiver play better than Madden. The way the defensive backs play the Wideouts in 2K is very life like.

Graphically the game looks dated and trust me 2K5 has it's faults but it's ridiculous that it can still hold a candle to Madden 25 despite being separated by 10 years and two generations of consoles.

I think the mainstream coverage probably begins and ends with his video. Just slow news time in the NFL.

Wow, so much for that theory that the "simheads" are in the minority, and the general gaming public could care less about all the issues we bring up on here. You have Florio on NBC (national tv) saying Madden sucks, the other game was better, and that EA killed the competition be because they feared that other game .

He said exactly what was said here, except he said it on national tv. Did anyone think that would actually happen? That might light a fire under EA's butt.

Wont light a fire, only declining sales will. Lower the sales, more pressure from corporate and NFL to make a better product or license opens up or goes to somebody else.

Right now, i believe there may be a declining trend in madden sales annually, but not big enough to make a difference.

That's been the recommendation on OS for the past decade, don't buy the game, but so far, Madden has held on.

It won't. As long as the NFL continues to promote the game, this comment will be disregarded. We must remember, this is one man's opinion. What if the anchors on ESPN began giving praise to Madden? Would you have the same sentiments?

So, did he take a dump on the title or simply fart in its face? LOL @ the vitriol comments, if only they would go viral.

I do not see this going far enough to impugn the company considering the company already acknowledges the madden title has been in the dumps (quality improvement and innovation wise).

Will ******s even catch this or will it simply go undetected under the radar?

I side with the latter and the SIM Community has already aired out Madden's dirty laundry for the last decade of next gen gaming - i do not see him, Mike Torila? Changing any minds.

Also, EA is partnered with PFT's competitor: PFF - this could simply be jabs at EA out of spite and bravado more than anything else that would actually bare significance.

Pro Football Talk is a news blog.

Pro Football Focus is a stats and performance analysis site.

The only thing the two sites have in common is the first two words of their names.

I must be thinking of another major site that offers stats and analysis on those stats.

Madden sold a lot more when they didn't have the exclusive license, a lot more.

No, I wouldn't,but what if anchors on ESPN say the same thing Florio did ? I'm just floored that he actually said it. I'm floored that he actually gave a darn about Madden to actually trash it and then bring up the other game.

Madden is part of NFL culture. It will take a lot more than one crappy console generation to change that. This could be the start of that change.

So if this game is made for ******s, like everyone keeps saying, why are the numbers not as high as back in the day or why the numbers are declining(or didn't explode like madden 25 which I know EA was hoping it would since it was their 25 years of madden)? Maybe those ******s are closet sim guys and are tired like us? . Or maybe those ****** are older now and want to play sim games and not blow teams out by 100 points? To me this game should easily sell 10-15 million.

Idk. I'm just sick and tired of EA is "making a game for ******" when it's more like EA can't make a good football game(and hide behind the ****** talk and really making it an arcade game cause they are good at making it play like that. Ice skating all over the freaking field) because they have no skill. Oh wait lets blame the upper mgmt for it not being sim. Wait lets blame not having the right guys behind us. Whatever. I'm calling it like I see it and they just don't have a clue how to make a football game. Just like 2k having all kinds of trouble making a baseball and nhl game. Sometimes you just aren't good at something. No excuses, you just aren't good at it. So of course you better renew that exclusively.

If everyone was good at everything we all would be driving a bentley. Well I'm driving a 2011 camaro so that is good enough, hahah

Disclaimer: I am drunk right now so everything I just said is me being pi**ed lol

they are ****** players, it isn't a long term game they play year round. They play it for a bit, see what is new then move on to the next game.

They probably just rent it or wait until they can borrow it or buy a 2nd hand copy

I got to watching the 3:30 soapbox spiel and I am content to takeaway that he is merely doing this as a publicity stunt for his own personal gain through media attention - to what end it will achieve: I have no idea but I imagine the very Madden Cover Vote tournament he, Mike Florio, lamented over does more for EA's positive publicity than his soapbox spiel does for their negative publicity.

What I will do however to spread the word is share his video link on the EA Twitter pages - what say you EA?

Maybe Florio was really upset with the fact that EA declined to include him in it's virtual Twitter feed so he could get into arguments with virtual mascots in addition to real ones.

LOL, oh bother.

Reading the comments I know now more than enough about Florio.

Next.
