NBA 2K14 News Post

IGN recently had a chance to play an early build of NBA 2K14 with the game Director, Rob Jones. They talk briefly about the Pro Stick dribbling and shooting.

Quote:
It turns out that holding LT (on Xbox 360) now triggers an assist pass based on whatever direction you nudge on the right stick. It's wild fun on fast breaks or for driving the lane and kicking out to a spot-up shooter behind the three-point line.

Once I got some advice from longtime series director Rob Jones, the dribble-stick controls made a lot more sense. As he simply stated, "Dribbles are taps [on the right thumbstick], shots are holds."

I like this much better than the previous control scheme. Decision making will be seamless.

I don't agree. Elite had shots tied to A DIRECTION. Straight up was shooting. That was it. This scheme sounds like any direction, but holding. Basically, it's the old shot stick, with taps for dribble moves.

I find it funny that the Elite scheme got no comparison to the 2K shot stick, but an expanded shot stick is being called Elite. Weird.

People complained last year and got used to it, im pretty sure this is going to feel natural after a few games as well if that.

..but the complaining without even playing first is what I dont understand. The apathy that basically comes out of nowhere is ridiculous.

..and I agree, comparing this to e LITE is way off base.

Hated 2K13's control scheme. I was hoping 2K made a change. Anxious to see if LD is on point about these controls being "silky smooth".

If you left the ability for all the controls to be intact from 2k13, then it should end up working for me, one way or another. Thank you.

Due to physical disability, I may not be able to control dual sticks in a very fine-motor control way. If I am unable to do so, and if I can not customize the basic controls to fit my needs then I won't be able to play the game.

It seems that you address my needs and as a result I will continue to support you year in and year out.

I've found that every year they make changes they end up feeling like the most comfortable to me. 2K12 was great, imo, and they 2K13 feels as natural to me as anything.

It's all about how you approach change, I think. If you feel it's gonna be a hassle then you won't learn it completely and feel it's bad.
If you just keep an open mind and believe 2K changed it for a reason, cause they felt it was better, then you won't have any problem learning the new controls and liking them.

The elite comparison is way off base imo especially considering THIS. It is not tied to a direction. In text that may not be that exciting but for ME, In action. It was very exciting.

What you will find is as you continue to play you can shoot in the best rhymic stick move and direction for THAT move. Off a double cross I might prefer to shoot going back to my right. Off a step back I can do that doing back with the same stick.

each user out of each move can find their own shooting comfort direction using the stick. So your combo's into shots will feel natural to YOU. At least it was for me.

Again you have journalists with limited time with the game leaving feeling it was natural. They are usually not even hardcore hoop gamers. If it feels natural to them it should feel pretty good for seasoned vets. YMMV but I think the right stick marriage of dribble moves and amount of shots you can select WITHOUT a modifier is Mikes best work to date. He better have a dam good reason to change from this in the future.

You mean like, with the stick in a neutral position, you move the stick to the right as you're moving and hold it there? And that will result in a crossover pull-up?

Does that mean that if we want to hold the stick to shoot, we have to do a dribble move first? I'm not understanding.

A hold in ANY direction will get you a shot. Hold left, hold right, hold at an angle, Hold in any direction = a shot Fitz.

So you do your move if you want to, then whatever direction it feels comfortable for you to shoot push the stick in that direction.

Right, but (and maybe I read it wrong) what I thought you were saying is holding the stick in a direction away from the ball hand will do a crossover, regardless of whether you tap it or hold it. If you tap it, it just does the crossover. If you hold it, it does the crossover into the shot.

So, keep the left stick neutral with right stick in any direction for pull up. Then if you are going right with right stick and push left stick right it will be momentum shot in that direction correct?

Thats also what I would assume.

Hopefully tap and hold (towards off hand) will result in a cross into jumper.

@DaCzar - Fake pass? is it still double tap A?

Taps are dibbles, Holds are shots, All of that is timing based, so you tap then after he starts the crossover... you hold if you want him to shoot. Depending on your timing in the ver I played you could start a cross and pullup before it was implemented or wait and do it after the cross depending on your stick speed.

Yes the version I played that is how it worked.

I'm still a little lost, but the demo's coming out soon (I assume), and I don't wanna frustrate anybody because I'm not grasping this.

1 last question. If I'm going right and moving left stick right and then hold the right stick left is this a spin jumper? If I hold the right stick down is this a step back jumper?

No a spin jumper will be a RS rotation around the players back from the ball hand.

I also had the same idea for the stepback jumper, hold RS away from basket.

# 118 RyanFitzmagic @ 08/20/13 12:22 PM
So, wait... if you tap the stick to the non-ball hand, let the stick get back to a neutral position, and then quickly hold it in the same direction (essentially a double-tap, but with the second tap being held), is that how you do a crossover pullup?

And if I'm moving right and hold the right stick left (or any direction), I'll just do a normal pullup?

One thing that I was hoping they brought back from 2K11 is the momentum fade jumper when not using turbo where your player would take 1 step and fade rather than the turbo momentum fadeaway where the guy really fade further away...

I'am not sure I make myself clear here though.

What I'am saying is that there should be two types of momentum fadeaway shot... One when not using turbo and one when using turbo.
