After having played the game for the better part of a week now, I feel ready to elaborate on my early impressions. Longtime player from the early PS2 days, and I pretty much only play franchise, so YMMV, yada yada yada... anywho, onwards:

The (overwhelming) positives. I'll keep this section shorter, as most of this stuff has been covered in depth:

- Pitch repertoires are vastly improved. This has bugged me for years! Finally, lots of pitchers have non-4-seam FB primary pitches, and cutters and sinkers abound!

- Much improved ball physics. Bloops exist! Huzzah!

- I'm getting very, very different results every time I play, which I consider a huge positive.

- Being able to turn off the on-screen displays. Oh how big a difference such a simple option can make.

- Everything looks very polished. The franchise menus are easy to navigate, snappy, and informative. The sorting options in the roster management screens are so much more convenient. Not having to scroll to see what level a guy plays at is hugely time-saving.

- I've never touched scouting before, but it looks much more intuitive this time around, so I'll give it a go.

- Obviously, the game is gorgeous.

The negatives. I'll expand more on the negatives than the positives not because they outweigh positives (they absolutely do not), but in the hopes that this stuff gets rectified via patch or in future releases:

- The crowd is a little... funky. They're rather raucous in the first inning, which feels weird for a mid-May game between non-rivals, but they settle down after that. Maybe the bigger problem is that the crowd doesn't seem to respond to the right situations. I got out of a bases loaded jam in the 8th inning of a game by punching out two straight guys, and the crowd didn't make a peep. However, get a man on base any time in the late innings, and they start going nuts. It seems really over the top, like the game is trying to emphasize that the crowd exists. Problem is, baseball is a pretty placid game. 95% of the game is a soft buzz, muted cheers, and polite claps. In the Show, it's either silence or the park going nuts.

- The hat sweat. Ugh. I know this is really minor and superficial, but the details matter with this game, right? Anyways, the hat sweat is wrong on multiple levels. First, that every single player has a ring of sweat on their hats, including the managers, is a little bizarre. That it happens on 40-degree days is even worse. Most importantly, the new style of hats don't show sweat anymore, so hat sweat doesn't exist anymore. But in the game, it's on every player, all the time.

- The weather. I haven't delved too deeply into my franchise, but I'm still playing sleeved-games every night, short sleeves every day. It's been in the low 40's every night game in Boston in April. A little variety would be nice. And maybe a little toughness out of the players: pitchers should be able to pitch in short sleeves when it's 58 degrees. The whole "sleeves for below 60 for pitchers, below 50 for players" is a little bothersome.

- I'm not seeing the reliever-usage logic improvements. My last game, the Royals brought in Tim Collins in the 8th inning, up by two, to face a L, L, R. He got through those three, so that's good. He then comes back the next inning, faces a L, gets him too. But then he faces a R, R, R... and stays in the game. Predictably, I record a walk, single, three-run home run. The Royals had both Aaron Crow and Luke Hochevar up in the pen and warm.

- Contrary to my first post in this thread, I had to turn down solid hits several clicks again. I've done this every year, as I feel the game is a little too rocket-line-drivey for my tastes.

- CPU outfielders still play walls like psychics. This is probably exacerbated by playing at Fenway, to be fair.

Okay, I've run out of steam and am now tired. Great game.
Try fooling around with the manager hook slider. It works with a few tweaks.

I love that we've come so far in gaming that we are debating "hat sweat".

And to think when I played Atari Realsports Football I never thought it would come to this!

btw - not denigrating anyone about the "hat sweat" comments, just take my observation at face value!

Oh I agree completely. Any time I find myself bothered by something minor, like a player's stance not looking right, I have to remind myself: I spent my youth playing a baseball game with little fat pixels that looked identical, and I LOVED IT. Can I really complain about how high a guy holds his hands?

Also, I'll give the manager hook slider a look. I'm trying to not get stuck in slider hell this year, and besides a few simple tweaks (solid hits, fielder arms, CPU strike frequency), I'm pretty content.

So you're saying the the Nationals will trade away Strasburg next year? Or the braves will trade away Jason Heyward and Kris Medlen? Yes, the game does not recognize names. However, there is something odd about Jeter playing for the Tigers. All of this has happened in my current RttS and its the middle of 2014.

This is the first year I've used the "Broadcast Cam" while batting. I've noticed that the rocket shots are greatly reduced. I'm also finding gaps and getting hits over outfielders outstretched gloves. Default sliders. Outstanding work SCEA!

Yeah, I can deal with crazy things happening, but why not for me??? Even when I have perfect timing with pitches in my hot zones it often yields nothing, sometimes even a miss! So why should I accept Wise hitting 2 home runs on pitches in his cold zone? After all, there must be a reason why they are called cold zone, at least it seems to make sense for my batters.

Wise hasn't been the only one so it's not a freakish occurrence. Hey, it could have been a bloop or whatever hit, not a weak hitter belting home runs.

Sorry, but I don't agree with you guys.

Seems like there needs to be an adjustment for player base running speed, but that slider raises for both CPU and User. I think having separate sliders, CPU and User, would be a great addition to the game.

# 388 Majingir @ 03/09/13 06:19 PM
If about 60% of the pitches I swung at were early swing(and only about 20% were late swing) does this mean I should probably increase the pitch speed slider?

Most of those early swings came off of circle changeup(which was low 80mph).

I'm thinking bout increasing speed, but don't want to just incase fastball becomes too fast. Seems like the visual speed difference between 90mph fastball and 80mph change are too big in this game.

I remember last year there was a complaint about Trade Logic.
His Braves had traded away Chipper Jones for some never-has-been, no name R.A.Dickey.
Could never happen!

Love the game so far except for one thing....I HATE the new fielding for RTTS, especially in the OF. I've turned at least half a dozen fly balls that should have been caught into triples because I cant tell where I am on the field or how close I am to the ball...sometimes I even over run and it lands short. I have no perspective as an OFer at times.

A couple things. the stealing is an issue as mentioned. Mauer/Youkilis stealing on first pitch but I turned down the stealing frequency thing.

There seems to be a LOT of jaggies or whatever, the stadiums and players aren't as crisp or crisp at all. I don't think it's my TV, because I didn't have the issue with last years game.

Hitting was super easy on veteran so I turned to All Star. I played two realistic games on that level, but all the sudden had 9 runs in one inning and it felt totally unrealistic. I know that stuff happens in real life but it didn't feel very authentic.

A few small things bug me still, like how pitchers freeze in the same stance after every pitch while waiting for the catcher to return the ball.

The game is good but there's a lot more issues I see than usual. I like the menu's, and they really paid more attention to accesories this year which I like.

I had 4 things that I was hoping for improvement and all seem to be better or fixed.

The first issue I had with 12 was robo 2b and ss. It was near impossible getting anything by them in 12. They either leaped 16 feet in the air or ran down bloop hits near the outfielders. I have hit shots by both positions and good consistency between hits and plays made.

Secondly was human batters ability to really turn on inside pitches. You could live inside on most all batters in 12 but not now. I have had some nice ropes on pitches in the inner half down both lines. Head to head with my son, he has punished me on the inner half, where last year not so much.

Third was the depth of Right field. The appearance was way too short in 12 but appears to better positioned this year. It may be my old eyes but I like the depth this year and seems to play consistently like Left field has always.

Last was balls down the line. Last year was an issue in that the ball seemed to lose gas and wouldn't hit the corner. I have not had a lot of chances but have had a few reach the corner and react realistic.

One disappointment for me was the lack of AI and human sliders especially speed on the basepaths and outfield speed. Seems to be a good gap between ai and human speeds.

All in all, everything that I could ask. Game continues to progress in a good way and I really wonder how they can make progressions with this game. But they always do.

Most everything I've posted has been positive but I have a slight issue.

Does anyone else think the "sound" off the bat and "feel" is off, like weak?
On many of my HR's, it doesn't "feel" like I got it where last year I could "feel" it. That's hard to quantify, I know. But, the sound of a home run so far has been the same as any other hit.

The only for thing I get bothered by is, I played a game before and Matt V was the only one talking for like 3 innings, didn't here a peep from Karros or Lyons, wth.

You're loss. No way I could go back to 12.

If u can afford it I would suggest buying it.

The fielding improvements alone (1 outfielder gets to a routine foul fly ball while another doesn't, based on ratings) make it worth the purchase.

The improved ability for the user to strike out a cpu hitter after setting them up correctly is worth the purchase alone.

And, no one has mentioned the disparity in scores. Last year it seemed like every Game was low scoring thru 6 and then all hell broke loose. This year, every game feels different.

Also, holding a lead IF u have a really good bull pen is realistic. No more cpu mounting rallies like clockwork after u score.

Of course, if ur pen is bad, they will beat up on them.

That's as real as it gets for me.

eventually i will break down and get it, no doubt. i am concerned with the issues and bugs but am confident that SCEA will have a patch. was curious if anyone else had become skeptical considering the stutter issues, etc that have been described.

I've tried several cameras(including one that was posted on here) and none seem to help me much in recognizing those curve/sliders(especially when they're low), it's getting frustrating having all these pitches seem like they're gonna be strikes, then suddenly dropping like 2 feet.

On plus side....Jays won!
Jays: 2 runs,5 hits
Yankees: 1 run,5 hits

CRAZY ending.Bottom of 9th,2 outs, runner on 2nd. Davis hits ball to Jeter at SS who has to run to OF grass to get the ball, he gets it, throws it to 1B and Davis is safe.....meanwhile, the runner I had a 2nd was running straight past 3B and went home for a walkoff win!

Still with so much early swings, even though I increased pitch speed slider. Looks like I have to increase it again.

I have been too busy actually playing to post my impressions. However, the game I just had made me realize why I need to make this post.

I made it to the playoffs in my Braves franchise. NLDS against the Nationals. First two games I overpower them in all facets. Game one I take 6-2, game two I take as well but by a closer margin at 8-6. Now onto game three.... I am in Washington and they get out ahead early. 2-0 after the first inning. I managed to keep them held to just two and eventually got it to 2-1. Then, all of a sudden, I give up a homer to LaRoche for 2.. 4-1 now. I go about 4 innings with barely even a hit. Eventually it comes to the top of the 8th, I get two guys on base but can't produce and have 2 outs and a full count with Heyward up to bat. So now I have a guy at 2nd and 3rd, 2 outs and a full count. Then I get a beautiful pitch and decide to swing for the fences.. peeled it down the right field line and it hits the foul pole for a 3 run shot, TIE GAME.

I end up winning it after getting a line drive homer to left with Simmons in the top of the 10th inning. Closed it out with Kimbrel striking out the entire side to end it. Amazing game. Couldn't be happier with this years edition.
