MLB 13 The Show News Post

With the MLB 2K series all but confirmed to be dead, Kotaku's Owen Good has posted an article on what MLB 13 The Show must do to keep the fans of baseball gaming happy. It should be interesting, considering a simulation baseball game for the 360 doesn't look very likely.

Quote:
Your long slog through your career in Road to the Show makes the game's threadbare commentary painfully apparent. I think the world of Matt Vasgersian but he is shackled to an outdated commentary engine given to repetition and dead air. Dave Campbell's dialogue library is really showing its age, and a majority of his work sounds like Dave Campbell playing Dave Campbell. Eric Karros should be thanked for his service and sent home. The Show has world class visuals and a smooth, if minimalist, broadcast presentation. The commentary supporting it has not pulled its weight in years.

In your opinion, what does MLB 13 The Show need to do next year to satisfy your baseball gaming needs?

Just a few thing for me,
- As someone else has said, I would like to see a season around 50 games and not all piled in 2 months. Maybe take the regular schedule and keep the divisional series at 2 games while the other series are cut down to just 1 game. I think this would allow many more people to be able to play through an entire season.
- I know that it is a programming nightmare but it would be awesome if you could update rosters within seasons or franchise. Im ashamed to say how many times I've restarted seasons because of new and better rosters coming out.
Gameplay:
- I feel as though the ball bounces too high off of the grass. I understand the ball bouncing high on turf but I've seen balls that were ripped in the gap and hit 5 feet in front of the warning track and bounce over the fence. The ball does not lose speed but it doesn't bounce nearly as high in real life as it does in the game. This has cost me runs more often than not with a fast runner on first with 2 outs.
- I'm not sure if it's just an illusion but it looks like batted balls are moving so slow while using the broadcast camera.

Other than these things, the game is golden and I am seriously looking forward to what these guys come up with for next year.

-create team like the one in diamond dynasty for a franchise mode

-ability to import pictures for logos and wordmarks on the uniforms

-more variety and fun in road to show mode, hard to find incentive to keep going. Third year in AAA and it's dragging along.

-better crowd sounds, more variety.

Better pictures for players who don't have a real photo.

1. They all have the same facial expression, i.e they don't. Have a lot of them smile like a lot of players do, or have a few perform my personal favourite, the "Ramon Castro" pose.

2. Have the one photo of the player and stick to it, the picture shouldn't change because of the uniform I'm wearing. Have one photo in the home uni and be done with it.

I am hoping the minimum/maximum velocity for every pitch is increased, there are a handful of pitchers this year who throw curveballs in the low 60's, and there are some pitchers in the minors (that were in the futures game) whose running fastballs/2-seamers average 98+ MPH.

Personally I think the best option would be to allow us to set the velocity range ourselves and have it completely independent from the 0-99 ratings. That way, we can have Verlander sit around 94 MPH like he does this year, with the ability to have him still hit 100 MPH. So his range would be 92-100 with an average velocity of 94. Same thing would apply to Chad Billingsley's curveball, Wei-Yin Chen's curve, etc.

I agree this is a great feature and if MLB the show incorporated this it would seal this game into the most complete sports game.

Honestly MLB the show has done so much right that anything else is just extra fluff. This is just a great game.

I also would not mind the pitching and hitting mechanics from the 2k series.

The analog hitting is nice. Where pullng down and up is for power and by just pushing it up is for contact.

for diamond dynasty,i have an idea to make it more fun and easier to earn money. kind of like trophies, make it so when you accomplish a major feat, you earn X amount of dollars. like "hit 3 homeruns with 1 player in the same game - $1,000,000." i think more thins like this a little additions to DD will make it a lot better

Ok I will throw something out for SCEA to look at and hopefully improve.

It is a gameplay feature and food for thought.

I play both 11 and 12 daily. I love both games equally. There are some things that 11 does much better. And things 12 does much better.

Overall 12 is a better game. But one thing that I notice and it is big, is the way hitting feels on 11 vs 12.

The new ball physics are a great addition. And I love them. However I like the speed of the ball overall, better in 11. When I rip a gap double in 11...it moves a little slower and plays out more in TV broadcast speed. When I hit a ball in the gap in 12 it flies. The ball moves too fast in 12 hence the percetion that OF are super human in 12. It is more real to life in that regard (the ball speed).....but I guess I like the broadcast perspective of playing baseball games as opposed to on the field perspective. I play ball IRL...when I play on my TV...I like the fantasy approach of a broadcast presentation of the game from on to off the field.

I am getting the same amount of doubles and triples in both games. But the feel and look in 11 is more natural to me. The ball is not a rocket. Where as on 12 it seems as if the ball really takes off more and far too often. And I understand IRL it does move like that but....for me it is a asthetic and feel thing. Hitting looks better (not sounds) on 11.

But the sounds they implemented for the sound off the bat and hitting the glove on 12 are superb!

Basically Nerf down the speed of the ball in 13. It does need to be toned down a little. I see a tad too many ground rule doubles in 12. I also do not see balls rolling to the corner as much in 12. In 11 they roll and slow down better in the corners.

Just some food for thought.

Ball physics are wonderful and this is the first year of there implementation so I expect them to tune and balance it better for 13.

On a presentation note we do need a dynamic fresh overall to play by play and color. One thing MLB 2K does well is broadcast presentation, and conversation and banter. I hope The Show can improve this area for 13.

12 made some nice subtle touches to commentary but I want even more dynamics in franchise. Again 12 made in-roads on this but expand on it even more.

A weekly wrap up show would be insane and immerse us in franchise even more.

How about a lot better CPU Bull pen logic?

I hate it when the CPU starting pitcher is throwing a no hitter against me and they give up their first and only hit like in the 7th inning with a pitch count around 70 and the manager brings in the bull pen the very next batter!

Why in the world would a manager take out the starting pitcher when he has only thrown 70 or so pitches and only gave up 1 hit and is dominating me?

This has been an issue for years and its time it was fixed!!!

# 329 tnixen @ 07/24/12 02:44 PM
Another thing that bugs me a lot about MLB 12 The Show is most of the CPU pitchers are too strike happy!

They can hit the corners with ease. And this is why its so hard to get walks in this game. I try and take a lot of pitches but more often then not they are called strikes.

I really think this game could be greatly improved by making all CPU pitchers less accurate!

Hit by pitch are far too low when compared to sim stats as well as MLB for both user and AI

Too easy to not walk anyone. Needs to be a balance to lose control more OUT of the zone and not always over the plate ala meatballs

Call up and send down of minor leaguers based on performance and not just for injuries (too long waiting for this one)

Impossible to field a bunt or weak hit and throw anywhere but 1B. Ridiculous. I should be able to make the occasional force play on the lead runner

Foul ball fan interaction is terrible still, and even worse are the repetitive fans who wear the same thing and move at the exact same time

Commentary is only a notch ahead of Hawk Harelson who is basically a collection of pre-progammed phrases himself. I honestly think it's a computer doing his play by play. He terrible and should never be imitated

1B takes too long with pitcher to make routine outs on balls hit to 1B. This should be rare

Thrown out from RF? Never

Players should round first more realistically

How do we separate crafty base runners who take an extra base either during play or against a pitcher?

Pick off system is fubar. Way too difficult to take any sort of lead and also too many balls thrown into stands. Need more subtle throws, like in dirt but to 1B still etc

Coaching changes during season

Mental lapses like missing a stop sign (rare)

Add in owners with personalities as well as team GMs. Owners may die, GMs get fired etc

Player suspensions

International free agents

Rain delays, makeup games and doubleheaders

Nagging injuries that reoccur, and an injury history/reputation

Expansion mode with draft

Weekly lineups for quicker simming

More doubles hit up the lines

MUST incorporate guys with good eyes to get walked more. Maybe its tougher to paint the corners against these guys? Both AI and user...Soriano and Adam Dunn should not have same amount of walks if they were both on my team where I played each game. This is a big one!

Stadium builder for franchise mode and the AI should use it too

Team relocation (rare)

Retractable roofs that work

Too many triples because of stupid OF wall animations

Stadiums should not always look sold out. Lame

Starters more stamina, relievers less (recovery for MR is too quick too)

Some guys should be able to play 162 games or close to it. (Durability needs adjusting on high end)

Much much much better stat tracking is needed and for multiple seasons and should be readily available. See OOTP

1. Improve CPU bullpen logic.
2. Improve infielder and outfielder throwing mechanics.
3. No more pitchers throwing the ball up in the air disrespectfully when getting pulled.
4. Runners performing the correct motions while coming into first base, like not stopping right at the bag, not running through the bag, or rounding the bag checking for a misplayed ball on a base hit. If a hitter just sauntered into first they would be pulled for not hustling.
5. Implement a scorebook style graphic overlay, a la TBS, to summarize the hitter's previous at bats.
6. Pitchers covering first more realistically.
7. Eliminate the delay of the first baseman before he proceeds to throw the ball around the horn.
8. More bloop hits to the bermuda triangle where the three fielders come in and still don't catch the ball.
9. A ton more hit variety.
10. More Old Time stadiums.

That's it.

- Better collision detection..12 is starting to get it right
- A vast variety of commentary with a smoother flow
- Lifetime stats vs. individual players..ex. so and so is 12-30 lifetime against so and so..
- Double Headers
- More dynamic weather system with realistic temps and wind
- Less ground balls getting past 1st and 3rd
- Pitching coach visits
- A working AL East Leaderboard on the Green Monster at Fenway
- Bat/Ball boys/girls
- Better and diverse crowd animations
- Less foul balls
- More umpires
- Better catcher animations when pitching
- Less "in the dirt" called 3rd strikes
- Better city backgrounds

- On Classic pitching you can get results like this with adjusted sliders.

Call up and send down of minor leaguers based on performance and not just for injuries (too long waiting for this one)

Impossible to field a bunt or weak hit and throw anywhere but 1B. Ridiculous. I should be able to make the occasional force play on the lead runner - don't disagree and a good point.

Never - don't throw it as it is a known bug on 12.

Players should round first more realistically - another good point I would like to see them run through first as well legging out singles. A detail that needs to be in the game.

How do we separate crafty base runners who take an extra base either during play or against a pitcher?

Pick off system is fubar. Way too difficult to take any sort of lead and also too many balls thrown into stands. Need more subtle throws, like in dirt but to 1B still etc - another decent point, it could use more tuning.

Coaching changes during season - yes would be cool

Mental lapses like missing a stop sign (rare)

Add in owners with personalities as well as team GMs. Owners may die, GMs get fired etc

Player suspensions - would be great.

International free agents

Rain delays, makeup games and doubleheaders - would be awesome.

Nagging injuries that reoccur, and an injury history/reputation - would be awesome.

Expansion mode with draft

Weekly lineups for quicker simming

More doubles hit up the lines

Team relocation (rare)

Retractable roofs that work

Too many triples because of stupid OF wall animations

Stadiums should not always look sold out. Lame - they don't. Go play at a last place Brewers stadium....empty seats everywhere. They do this pretty good already.

Starters more stamina, relievers less (recovery for MR is too quick too) - sliders are your friend.

Some guys should be able to play 162 games or close to it. (Durability needs adjusting on high end) - agree

Much much much better stat tracking is needed and for multiple seasons and should be readily available. See OOTP - agree

You made some great points, and some I just don't agree with and some are things that will be difficult to implement right away.

But the game plays great overall as most of us know. When we are talking about little things and not core gameplay you know you have an outstanding product.

Second that will probably never happen but would be so awesome is be able to start in the 70s and go through time to reach the present.

I wish I knew how OOTP can do it but no sports title can do this. Don't use real pictures, don't use real looks...just the names & appropriate stats. It would be awesome but I won't hold my breathe.

I'll be really happy if they fix my first one. This game is better than Madden or NBA 2K or Fifa or anything!!!
Paying $60 bucks for the product allows me to state my concerns, especially when the venue for such is provided. I don't see any of my points as complaining, but areas that I see that can be improved. Of course it is a fantastic game, but not lacking the need for improvement.

# 336 Cavicchi @ 07/26/12 12:58 PM
Better and more accurate player ratings, especially attributes, and that goes for pitchers as well.

# 337 BenGerman @ 07/26/12 01:54 PM
I'd love to see SCEA give the player the ability to turn off ratings, letting us rely solely on stats and such. It's a long shot, but something that I'd love to see.

Also, I know its beating a dead horse, but as I play through my Franchise I can't help but wonder how much this game could use some kind of end of the week wrap up. The Show does a great job of making me feel connected with my franchise, but I often feel out of the loop when it comes to other teams.

The one thing I really want is for MOM to be an Exhibition mode again, not just a Franchise/Season mode. I will be a very happy man if that happens.

2. The ability to better ram people at home. seems like a lot of the time i dont have great control.

3. A hall of fame and retired players page for RTTS and Franchise.

4. Edit player potentials.

5. Be able to move back and fourth the players batter stance. The ability of pitchers to dust players off and saying I am batting I could move guy back a little bit. or forward depending on the pitches.

6. ore variety in crowd.

7. A better Knuckleball.

8. More in game stuff like the wave from fans in crazy moments, maybe more mascot things that are specific to certain teams. and would be cool for more sound effects and little things like 7 inning stretch or boat races, or under the hat things in between innings.

9. MLB tonight would be very cool to have once a week for analysts, if not that then instead of the paper have an MLB.com site replica and have all news and different updates, maybe even a site that scouts players and just random tid bits. Eextreme Wrestling Revenge did a great job on gossip and crazy stuff like this during its career mode. IF not at least include paper news through playoffs.

10. Interviews with players in RTTS and franchise. I want things in there to make it feel more connected, players to have personalities, and chemistry ratings. MVP did this very well where managers would have to have meetings to make players happy or certain teams would just start losing, and this should lead to being able to fire a manager in middle season if he is not keeping team happy.

11. Locker room celebrations. World Series Celebration such as parade and champagne. Maybe even add the shaving cream pie and team mates wearing world series shirts for win.

12. Make the roofs work and if not in franchise be able to control weather in exibition

13. When focusing on key things add players. Madden in older games did this great by picking out on player for each game and talking about him, really adds to it.

thanks for reading
Agreed with most

It would be nice to see batting stance/pitcher delivery edits transfer from one roster to another like walkup music.
