MLB 13 The Show News Post

With the MLB 2K series all but confirmed to be dead, Kotaku's Owen Good has posted an article on what MLB 13 The Show must do to keep the fans of baseball gaming happy. It should be interesting, considering a simulation baseball game for the 360 doesn't look very likely.

Quote:
Your long slog through your career in Road to the Show makes the game's threadbare commentary painfully apparent. I think the world of Matt Vasgersian but he is shackled to an outdated commentary engine given to repetition and dead air. Dave Campbell's dialogue library is really showing its age, and a majority of his work sounds like Dave Campbell playing Dave Campbell. Eric Karros should be thanked for his service and sent home. The Show has world class visuals and a smooth, if minimalist, broadcast presentation. The commentary supporting it has not pulled its weight in years.

In your opinion, what does MLB 13 The Show need to do next year to satisfy your baseball gaming needs?

I went through 20 pages and haven't seen anyone talk about the DRAFT. Its horrible, unrealistic and takes all the fun out of Franchise mode for me! It needs to be more like OOTP. There should be 15+ rounds and an signing period where you actually have to negotiate with them. There should also be an International Free agent signing period. You should be able to scout and sign them.( Few should be MLB ready, while most have to spend years in the minors to develop.)
Last I would like to see a Face Scan system like PES has to give to RTTS players so we can actually look like ourselves in the game, as well as minor league players so they can actually look like themselves( If you use a roster that actually has real minor league players names such as Knights).

2K's announcers and pitching mechanics. If this happened next year, I may die. Those were the two big things that kept me in 2K so long, and they nailed them.

make Rookie and Veteran more enjoyable and easier to win on and play on... not every level needs to be real and hard to enjoy go back to 08 with the AI on the lower couple levels... even default All-Star was playable and enjoyable and that was my first time playing a first season with this series.

You have taken the input of the top rated players here on the boards and run with it. what about those of us that dont find the game that easy? those of us that don't play this game on the top two or three levels of play??? why should we have to suffer the pain of unplayability due to the top 1% of the gamers on this site..

please lower AI back to or as close to 08 levels on Rookie and Veteran and maybe All-Star ..

I've read quite a few threads on Classic pitching (tips and suggestions), but nothing official. I would like to see an official explanation of what to do for Classic pitching.

I haven't gone through all the posts here, so I imagine this has been suggested:

The ability to customize leagues for season mode. Reduce the number of teams and divisions. Specifically, it would be great to have two eight-team leagues, for those that want to play a past season, pre-expansion of 1961.

Would be great to be able to recreate those seasons and have the CPU generate a 154-game schedule. Also have the ability to rename some teams: Brooklyn Dodgers, New York Giants, Philadelphia A's, Milwaukee Braves, St. Louis Browns, Washington Senators, etc.

This for sure. Also they have to do something about the weather in the cities that have domed stadiums. If u can't close the roofs at least make it where the weather isnt 30 degrees. Make it where in Toronto the weather is no lower than 65 degrees. At least that way we would see a reason the roof isn't closed.

The Show does such a great job immersing you in the game with stats galore that it's a shame the announcers come up short. They inject next to no life in the game, and that's a shame. So new announcers are a must.

I'd also like to see the removal of bar ratings, or at incorporate a numerical value. Make it 20-80, like the scout scale. It's frustrating trying to figure out things like who is the better defensive player, or comparing two different hitters against left-handed pitchers.

Making the discipline rating mean something. This is one of those things that 2K got right. For guys with a high discipline/plate vision rating, like a Dunn or a Votto (guys who draw 100 walks a season), you'd get a "sneak peek" at the pitch (i.e. the game would show a little line indicating what area the pitch would be in and what type of pitch). It wouldn't happen every pitch, and lesser hitters wouldn't get that advantage very often. It really helped those ratings mean something, IMO.

1. Option to have retractable-roofed parks with open or closed roofs.

2. Option for switch-hitters to bat from the other side in all modes.

3. Reduce the number of times pitchers get hit.

4. An option to create a player and follow him throughout his career in season or franchise mode.

5. Bring back Rex Hudler.

6. Custom realignment.

7. Relocate franchise and build a park. Maybe cut a deal with a city and have to use an existing venue temporarily and the ability to negotiate who pays for what and receive offers from cities.

8. Snapshots in replay mode and the ability to upload them and download them to your computer.

9. Realistic trades.

10. Something like EA's Game Face.

11. Better home run and walkoff celebrations.

12. New championship celebrations.

13. Option to dispute calls and control level of anger on questionable calls. (The black umpire is really inconsistent).

Also, maybe I'm missing it, but I'd like to be able to negotiate contract extensions with players mid-season.

You're not missing it. It's not in there.

If you're a fan of the front office side, yeah, I can see it. I'd just rather play and decide who to sign and who to let walk at the end of the season.

Lebron, I don't mind Vasgersian and Campbell. I don't dislike Karros. It's just that the Wonder Dog had panache.

I would say new commentary is necessary. And correct commentary while I'm at it.

Frankly not that much, but a few would make it so I dont feel pissed off at spending another $60 for minor changes and new stances/pitching animations.
  • Wider strike zones. At least have more bad calls on strikes, more balls being called strikes and maybe a bit more strikes called balls. Just more realistic in general. MLB umpires just have wide zones now, and dont call high strikes. Maybe MLB would have a problem with not abiding by the rule book, but adding into the umpire tendencies that they have wider zones shouldn't be a problem.
  • Better facial animation. Ex: Closer closes out game, pumps fist with no facial mvoement and clinched mounth. Looks awesome man!
  • More catcher set up animations. Please for the love fo god add in the catcher putting the glove where it's actaully called. As of now I try to hit the outside corner, but he sets up down the middle because the cursor was slightly inside the zone. The set up on the corner position is actually way outside. It sucks since the default view SCEA seems it wants everyone to use now is the broadcast one. I'm sick of seeimg the same few set up spots, which are wrong as well, over and over.
  • I'd love some new commentators, but the backlog of stuff they have now would make repeatable dialog much more of a problem in 2013. But veteran players are sick of hearing the same crap for years. Get some cheap voice actors and record a bunch of stuff. I dont care if they're real announcers, I just want you to kill...I mean replace the current announcers.
  • BETTER NET CODE!!!! Its getting better every year, but too often are games decided based on lag. I'd call the devs geniuses if they added this feature. Detect each players' ping, if it is high (200+) and a player quits the game before the 4th inning or so erase the game from both players' history. Since it would be ikely the game ended due to one player beign fed up with the lag. Add a category for the player stats, Lag Quits: 4, so other players know how many times they've had unbearable lag.
  • Actual DLC. I would pay good money, and I'm sure most on here would, for stadium updates, additional batting stances, pitching motions, ROSTERS with actual players (with stats, faces, pictures, etc. basically the ones that come with the game. I'd gladly pay $10 for a pack of all the players that debuted during the season. Maybe put it out near the all-star break. As well as a lesser fee for the stadium updates that were apparent upon opening day that year. i.e. Wrigley Field's changes in right. I would have paid $10 for a DLC pack that added some of those stadium updates, moved the Astros to the AL in 2013, and added the two wildcard team rule.
  • Hitter tendencies. Are they a pull hitter, do they have a high ground ball to fly ball ratio. Same for pitchers, does a player have a high ground ball rate or not. Do they throw their fastball 75 percent of the time.It would be nice if this affected the controlled players as well and not just the AI. I remember the all-star baseball games having a push/pull option and it changes the batting cursor I believe. It might have beena Ken Griffy jr. game as well
  • Custom pitch movements similar to the MVP series. That was awesome, being able to chose the movement on a 2 seam fast ball, or chose a slider that goes 11-5. In the game now you can get by by making a really fast sinker, or fast sweeping curve. And a lot of movement is determined by the pitching animation I feel.
  • Instant replay. I feel like I've seen a HR instant replay before in the game. Maybe I dreamed it or something. But this happens pretty often actually now.

I'm a franchise nut and for a long time I have always wanted another level or 2 for minor league teams. Better yet would be a rookie league team. This would allow expansion of the draft. I absolutely hate that there are only 4 or 5 rounds in the draft. It really bothers me that there are more rounds in the NFL games currently than in an MLB game. Even if the draft were amped up to 10 rounds I would be satisfied.

For the Braves, I'd like to see Milwaukee Braves throwbacks and the 1970s jerseys (I always associate those jerseys with Hank Aaron, so that'd be nice).

And I'd really LOVE to be able to relocate teams or create a new franchise, would really like to get North Carolina an MLB team on there.

1) Pitchers' 2nd and 4th pitches can be shown clearly. The colours are too similar. I can't differentiate on TV.

2) CPU batters' timing and contact are shown. They were shown in previous versions of the Show but not this one.

Thanks.

For a few years I stayed away from MLB The Show but after playing the 2K series for two years. I think MLB the Show provides a realistic experience in my opinion.
