Kotaku's Owen Good chimes in with some of his thoughts surrounding the latest micro-transactions to make their way into NCAA Football 12.
Quote:
There may not be any optimal time to tell gamers about all the microtransactions and DLC for which they can expect to pay extra in an upcoming release. But the official reveal of a game's main features -- the stuff folks expect to come with the $59.99 retail price -- would probably be the least optimal.
Monthly sub fee? Can you guys even read? The activision was a one time fee of about $15 from what I understood and it's not even definitely being charged! And it would give future map packs (which cost $15 each) for free to you as part of the subscription.
It's not even the same as EA anyway but just drop that. And NO ITS NOT OKAY ACTIVISION is doing that but this isn't an Activision FPS gaming forum, it's NCAA.
I love how the only defense for what EA is doing here is
'well, other companies do it'
'it's only $3'
Sometimes when everyone is doing something, it isn't necessarily the right thing to do, ya know?
And sometimes, your opinion is not the only opinion that is right, ya know? You can liberally throw competition into the mix, but others can't bring up other companies into the mix?

Seems one-sided to me.
You guys have to be trolling. Once again, I'll state.... WHAT OTHER COMPANY CAN I BUY AN NCAA OR NFL FOOTBALL GAME FROM ON MY XBOX 360 OR PS3?
You are comparing another company, in a different genre, with a totally different DLC than what EA Sports is offering.
Can you read? That article quite clearly says it's a subscription service.
Did you even read my whole post? You would realize I mentioned the fee of $15 in my second sentence.
However, actually the only part of the article that even mentions subscription is...
Quote:
So, you're probably wondering if Elite is free or if it will come with that rumored subscription fee. Activision says there will be some free features, but for the complete Elite experience you'll need to have a premium membership. How much will it cost? Activision isn't saying but claims it will be "less than any comparable online entertainment service." Included in your subscription will be all future downloadable map packs. Non-subscribers will have to pay the $15 or whatever the packs cost, but subscribers get them at no extra charge.
So, it doesn't "quite clearly say there will be a subscription fee" because they don't even know if they will charge for this. Also, it doesn't say anything about it being a monthly charge (which was what my response was to) and alludes to the fact it will be a one time fee (maybe annual fee, no where would monthly come into my mind). This fee also covers map packs which are $15 each, so if the sub fee is $15 one time or for a year, that would mean you would effectively be paying $7.50 each rather than $15 each and you'd get these other services. So it would be cheaper to prepay than it would be to just pay for the map packs. That's just pointing out the fact you'd be saving money if you did it this way rather than buying each pack separately.
That being said, it has nothing to do with what we are discussing and yes I am against Activision DLC as well, but not as much as I am against EA because I could just buy battlefield if I wanted to instead of the COD franchise to get my war game FPS fix. To get my NCAA and NFL fix I have EA and .... who exactly?
Someone posts something you disagree with they: have an agenda, are complaining to complain, etc.
Someone posts a source you disagree with: it isn't credible, doesn't count.
Someone points this out they: have hurt feelings, a persecution complex, or are being defensive.
It seems like it's standard operating procedure for you though. You won't own up to it and you'll continue to do it. Oh well, whatever. Moving on.
If you made a valid point I would acknowledge that. So far you have offered nothing but a personal opinion which I do not agree with.
APF 2k8. That was an NFL game. NCAA license is up this year. After that, any company can make a game.
By the way, the mods are qualified enough to determine who is trolling or not.
lol man I'll give it to you. You had me going this whole time.
APF2k8 is my only other option and, despite what you say, it is not an NFL game. Can I play as my hometown Philadelphia Eagles in it? It's also, you know, 3 years old.
So I guess the answer to my question is: No, I can not buy another NFL or NCAA game because EA Sports makes the only one available. And why is that? Because they bought the exclusive license. Case closed.

No offense, but how is the guy that posts links to sources, comes with a coherent, fact based debate and answers opposition with logical, intelligent responses rather than name calling, the "personal opinion guy" whereas the guy who is posting personal opinions the one making valid points? I swear this thread is giving me brain trauma.
I think we disagree with your argument about the features being 100% necessary for the functionality of the game.
If you want to be upset about them marketing the features as "already in the game" I can understand that. I can't understand the argument where you state the features are 100% necessary for the functionality of the game.

It's a subjective opinion one way or the other. There are NFL players in it, right?
To you case closed, I wouldn't expect anything else because you tried to closed off every opinion that someone countered with.
I'm perfectly fine with your opinions, I just don't personally agree with them.

No, there are no NFL players in it. There are players who used to play in the NFL but there are no current NFL players, as far as I know.
The fact that you even answered my question with that suggestion proves to me and should prove to everyone else that EA does in fact have an effective monopoly on the pro and college football game genre.

It's still not a monopoly. Exclusive licensing and monopolies are different animals with different connotations.

The new features are a luxury within the game
Exactly. They are added features, that are not required to play the game. Not having these features doesn't prevent you from playing the game.

I agree in fact, it is not a monopoly since other companies can make a football game (Backbreaker and APF2k8 for example). However, if I want an NFL or NCAA game, which let's be honest, that's what people want. They don't want to play with fake people for the most part, the casual gamer and especially the hardcore gamer want the real players they see on Saturday and Sunday. I'm sure you can admit that.
That is what creates the "monopoly" (notice the quotes). It is effectively a monopoly. I can't think of any other situation in any other part of our country where a situation like this exists other than maybe Comcast, and, coincidentally, there are many similar feelings for EA/Comcast from their customers.
The point remains, and it can't really be debated, that if I want to play the latest NFL or NCAA sports game on my Xbox 360, Wii, or PS3, it will come from EA sports and I have no other options. To me, that might as well be a monopoly since I, personally, do not care to play with fake players in fake stadiums with fake logos just as the high majority of the rest of the population doesn't want to play with fakes and would rather have the real deal.

Also, the post you quoted had exactly 0 opinion in it. It was all facts. Just noticed that actually. The fact that you think it's an OPINION that the only NCAAF/NFL licensed games coming out this year are from EA makes me think I wasted a lot of time and typing in debates with you.

Exactly. Let's just clear up this silly monopoly argument and call it what it is. EA has a monopoly on NFL and NCAA Football games. And those are what most everyone wants in a football game. If that doesn't amount to a football monopoly and isn't a big deal EA would not have paid out the hundreds of millions they did for it.

Exclusive licensing is a staple of the NFL Business plan. See their apparel deals, see direcTV, etc.
If you want to watch your team out of market you have to have DirecTV.. If you want to own licensed NFL apparel you have to buy whatever brand they have the deal with.
EA is along for the ride on this, and I don't think anyone likes it, but the NFL is far more to blame for this fiasco than EA. VC bid on the license and came up short, the rest is history. If you want to be mad, be mad at the league.
Similar story with the NCAA. Although slightly different since the TV deals are done by conference and in some cases teams, but they have a long history of exclusivity when it comes to their IP.
My understanding is VC didn't even bid on the NCAA license, buy my memory maybe fuzzy on that. I'll ask next time I talk to those guys.

Facts according to you.
I feel the same way.
When I quoted that, you didn't mention games coming out this year, did you? You keep adding on to your opinions to try make them facts. All througout this thread you said you only options were Madden/NCAA. I call you out on that statement and mention APF and then down the road you change your answer to "games coming out this year."
Plus, you said APF was your only other option in that post I quoted.
When I speak of you opinion on this, I'm referring to your whole opinion on DLC and defending against it, I just don't agree with it. That's all.

Why is that EA's fault? Why are they the only ones that bear the blame?
My understanding is VC didn't even bid on the NCAA license, buy my memory maybe fuzzy on that. I'll ask next time I talk to those guys.
EA had the only NCAA FB game(expect maybe text based sims) at the time of the exclusive deal was made. It was around 2 years before that the last Sony or 2k college football game was made. so I doubt they even wanted to make a bid.
When I quoted that, you didn't mention games coming out this year, did you? You keep adding on to your opinions to try make them facts.

I'm done with you dude. No offense, but your responses and posts don't even warrant a response. Go back and track my posts and what I quoted in my posts and you'll realize that I didn't bring up APF, it was brought up to me (BY YOU NOW THAT I CHECK) as the answer to "What other NCAA and NFL game can I buy?". I think it was pretty obvious that I was talking about this year's version, as I know that 2k5 exists since I was using it as an example in many of my posts.
Unless you can prove me wrong by saying that the Philadelphia Eagles are in APF2k8 and all of the players pictures and stats, etc. are in the game, then what I said was fact.
Also, why can't I buy another NCAA or NFL game this year? Because EA bought the exclusive license. That is also fact.
In the post you quoted those were the only two statements I made, and you said "that's just your personal opinion". smh
