Well said, pal. I was gonna post something earlier about this very type of thing. Its bothersome to read "Show this" and "Show that" all the time, especially when people flat out dismiss the game because it's not The Show. I'm as big a fan of The Show as any person on these boards and would like to see SOME minor elements of that game implemented in 2K's (which I mentioned in my impressions earlier in the thread). But what I definitely don't want is The Show Jr., which it seems some people are asking for.
There is no reason why any open-minded individual can't enjoy TWO baseball games, especially with two games that approach the game of baseball so differently. The Show is the most polished, authentic replication of any sports game out there (imo) so yeah, its better than the 2K game. And of course this game is missing that level of polish that The Show has. This series has bounced from one developer to another and another, never being allowed to fully realize their respective vision for the game. The Show has had largely the same dev team working on it for close to a frickin decade. How can you compare the two fairly?
I, along with many on here, like where this game is headed. If you don't like it, nobody is telling you that you have to. But when I read that the pitching in this game is stupid/unrealistic/worse than The Show's etc. then I am led to believe that an individual is hating for the sake of hating. The pitching in this game is arguably the most organic analog control scheme ever created for a sports game. Its fair to say "its not for me". Not fair to say any of the other criticisms I've read in here and it makes me question the poster's motive and dis-regard their "opinion" altogether.

Great posts.
I personally have played the show since 08 because the transition from 2K7 to 2K8 was really bad for me. Now every year the show gets better polish and gets better playing, I still root for 2K to up their game( so to speak).
Last year I purchased 2K10 along with the show but still couldnt commit to the game and was my "pick up and play" game. I hate the bashing that goes on here. When Sony introduces a new feature it makes me happy that they are improving and the same thing with 2K. Last year and so far this year they are making great improvements to their game and I love it.
Reminds me of the days when there was no baseball exclusive license and there was real competition between developers of baseball games; MLB, ESPN, All Star Baseball, High Heat, etc.
I've played 5 games of the demo and have seen some positives as well as negatives.
+ Errors and injuries are in (game killer last year for me).
+ Pitching is better and to my understanding there will be a slider to tweak the control.
+ Uniforms look better.
+ Some animations are better.
+ AT&T Park looks great.
Negatives
- I experienced the home run / out glitch. My left fielder goes back on a fly ball, runs into the wall as the ball is coming down and the play is ruled a home run and an out. Run counts. I really hope this is just a demo issue.
- My catcher fielded a bunt out in front of the plate. When he throws to first there is no arm animation of him throwing the ball. The ball just morphed from his body to the first baseman. Not good.
- Players still seem to be too robotic to me. Especially during the real time presentations and between pitches. Not a game killer but it has been like this for years and just does not look natural.
I am still on the fence with this game. While I think it has improved from the last two years I also understand that it had a long way to go. I'm just not sure it is where it needs to be for me to warrant a purchase.
WOW, never saw so many people look for negatives in the demo. I mean we can really do this to very demo that comes out not just 2k11, it just seems people want this game to fail for some odd reason.
I think 2k does some many things right, even better the the competition.
I've owned every MLB 2K game that has come out...here is how they have progressed in my mind, and I will just start from the current gen.
MLB 2K6 - Unplayable. Player models were garbage, gameplay was buggy, just...garbo.
MLB 2K7 - HUGE leap over 2k6. At the time, it may have been the best looking next-gen sports game, graphically. Maybe even the best next gen graphics of ANY game. It was a HR fest though, and it was easy to throw perfect games... I threw 6 in a row with Roger Clemens. Regardless of that, the game was so much fun, and I played the heck out of it.
MLB 2K8 - Tried to do too much. Graphics took a hit from 2k7, had some strange bugs and framerate issues...and the meatballs were a game killer. BUT, the physics, the signature styles, the custom batter walk-ups and stadium music all were great, and I did play this game quite a bit.
MLB 2K9 - Totally changed directions from 2k8. Introduced real time presentation. They changed the player models and the camera angles, and I thought both were downgrades. I didn't play this game as much, as it felt like I was constantly fighting with the sliders to get a decent game in.
MLB 2K10 - Loved the MLB Today feature...I used to try and sneak in a game after work before the real games would come on tv. However, franchise mode never had any good free agents, and there were still some annoying bugs, such as no errors or injuries. I also didn't like the player models, as guys like CC Sabathia and Prince Fielder looked like they had a tape worm. I really enjoyed My Player but it got stale after a while. Momentum seemed to be a problem as teams would rack up 8-9 hits in a row on a regular basis. Game was fun, but not addicting.
MLB 2K11 - Players and graphics have taken a step up. The new camera angles give the game a new feel, but most of all the game feels FUN again. The only things I will change with sliders are the pitch speed and I will flip off the ball trail. That's it! I can tell this game is getting back to the fun-factor I had with 2k7, which was my favorite baseball game ever (even more than The Show '10, which I played a lot).
My favorite part is that you can really feel it when you get jammed or make weak contact, because the ball reacts appropriately. I got REALLY fisted with Adrian Beltre, but the ball had so much English on it that it kind of trickled up the middle. Coupled with a broken-bat sound (but no shattered bat), it felt realistic. I love that you have to wait back on balls outside and try to drive them to right field. In past renditions of the game, you could hit those balls 470 feet to right field with a pull-swing.
In summation, this game is awesome, and if they have fixed franchise, this might be the go-to game for me this year, though I will still pick up both.
I wanted to change the topic from all this negativity to some praise for 2K from a gamer who gave up on 2k10 and had little expectations coming into this one.
Pitching
- I really like the new camera angle to me and I think the speed of the pitch is fine and this can be adjusted to our liking as well in the full version.
- Variable strike zone is amazing and though it's a small addition, it's a game changer for both the AI and Human.
- The HUD for pitching is fantastic and allows your to track your progress or lack there of nicely with pitch count, tendencies etc.
Hitting
- Just the fact that we don't need a release day patch is cause for a congrats right there. The different swings are amazing and interact nicely with the contact and power ratings, without fully relying on them as well.
- The ball leaves the bat nicely this year. The animation is much more fluid and the new camera angle helps this as well, especially in the infield.
- I really like the bad matchup vs pitcher popup.
- Let the animations run between pitches and it's pretty cool both pitcher and hitter reactions to situations on the mound and in the box
Fielding
- Wow.. what a difference a year makes. Simply awesome. Sure you may see see the odd play here or there, but this is a video game people and that happens in NHL, Madden, NCAA, Fifa etc too.
- The animations are so fluent and they are never the same either in the same sequence
- The throw meter is awesome. I feel as though 2K compensated for rocket arms and really added some fluidity to the throws from both infield and outfield. Sliders for this as well in case you don't like that.
- The ratings do affect the fielders and that is some sim right there
Cons
- Jagged shadows.. hope that gets toned down
- Human hitting angle is hard to follow the ball in the air in the outfield, especially when it's hit deep
- no commentary but we knew this going into it. We all know how good it is in the full versions
Overall, I have to give some praise where it's due. They could be changing the xbox baseball scene for the better and for this I am happy and thankful. Graphics are actually really good if you consider the source and the company.
good:
- the game is fun
- the camera angle after contact is made while batting
- the presentation (load screen and after)
- stadium size is big
- the fielding meter (look and feel)
- improved animations when fielding
bad:
- the graphics are terrible imo. even if a face is accurate it doesn't look like a real person; there are jaggies everywhere (stadiums, player shadows, etc.)
- the framerate sporadically drops when i'm batting after contact is made (not only fouls)
- the quick bat retraction effect on follow throughs when batting
- sporadic sped up animations when watching RTP
- players morphing through each other. i hit a two run shot with j.hamilton. i LOVED how it showed both runners rounding the bases all the way home, but j.hamilton morphed right through the other players after touching home.
- when players aren't moving during any given moment of RTP, they just look like zombies
- no commentary. i haven't purchased an mlb2k game since 2k7 (i still play 2k7 by the way ). i was really looking forward to the commentary since it is known to be stellar. oh well, i'll have to wait until user videos, and video reviews.
I'm still on the fence about the game. I know I seem negative about it, but it does have a fun factor. IMO, fun matters alot and coupled with stellar presentation and commentary it's amazing how many problems don't seem "that bad" when you're so engrossed in the "atmosphere". So, I'm thankful for OS and it's contributors because I rely on you guys so much because I don't have the funds to just go out and buy every game released and hope for the best. Can't wait to read/see/hear you guys' input on the retail version when released.
Played a couple of games last night after the 2 dudes in my avatar basically got pimped slapped by Orlando.
Both games were as the Giants. I really never played MVP 2005, or the MVP Series, but I have watched plenty of videos as many regard that as a great baseball game. To tell you the truth it really looks like VC has looked to that game to move this series forward.
The similarities are very evident.
I'm a simple kinda person. What I looked for in the DEMO was did this DEMO play better than last years DEMO. For me YES.
Then I looked to see if it looked Graphically better than last year. For me YES.
Finally did they improve or fix some of the things that were lacking in last years game. For me YES again
I can't wait to get my hands on this title maybe this weekend (though I have a busy family weekend) to get some time with the FULL Version which by our very own Chase, seems to be tighter than the DEMO
MAn, there's still quite a few "what the crap..." (and I don't mean that in the good way) animations. I've had several that don't match the situation-a casual lob when a runner is heading for home and my 2B rearing back to gun down a runner at 1B...lol...worse still, ti was after fielding a ball 5-10 feet from 1B. Lots of little animation stuff like this still going on. As I said before, there is still a lot of the old animation issues cropping up in-between the improvements...it's weird. I like that more of the RTP stuff is in, but it's like they just slapped 2K9's RTP in and didn't bother smoothing it out.
Also had a couple framerate hitches on hits other than pop-ups (anything in the air seems subject to it possibly happening-fly balls, pop-ups, soft liners, etc). Not horrible or frequent though.
I've received a few emails from friends who tried the demo on PS3 and were upset about "washed out" colors and graphical issues, etc. I'm seeing some of those same complaints here. Is it really that bad?
I can honestly say that on the 360 at least, the colors are as sharp as I've ever seen. In fact, while in the overall scheme of things the graphics don't blow me away or anything, IMO 2K11 is the best looking 2K baseball game since 2K7 by a long ways...and while the models aren't as good, the stadiums, colors and lighting are the best in the series.
Also have finally seen some errors and miscues. Pretty good variety there, it seems and so far everything has happened in the right situation and made sense. Definitely nice to see the way the ball feels more "in play" this year and like how you have to account for bad hops, hard liners, etc.
If you know me, I'm all about the "presentation" elements of a video game in order to make the game the MOST true-to-life as possible.
Pros
-STATISTICS (galore....beats the competition by aLANDSLIDE)
***This element ALONE warrants a purchase...plethora of stats during an at-bat, etc....unbelievable!!
-camera angles
-hit diversity
-stadium sound (chants/rants)
-fielding (smoother throws, etc)
Cons
-player models (some player model faces are muddled)
-stadium graphics (took a minor hit IMO)
-bat *sound* (still sounds like a 2x4 everytime I get a hit)
-baserunning (players rounding bases is NOT smooth at all)
*This coming from a 'Show' player-
All in all, MLB 2K11's DEMO is a great game...yes, IMO, it's a step-down graphically, but the smooth gameplay, variety of hits, PLETHORA of statistical overlays, and improved fielding shows that 2K FINALLY has a build they can use to improve on year after year....no longer should they have to reinvent or rebuild...they've hit the nail on the head this year with a great demo.
Your negatives are tied directly to the fact that this is a game DEMO. So, what you are saying is that the full game will have no flaws and be close to perfect???
No, I'm not saying that at all. Those impressions were based off 2 games. Since then, I've played more and sure, there are a few things that I would put in the Negative category, such as:
-Not a big fan of the new batting camera after you hit the ball. I have no idea where fly balls are going. It would be better if the camera panned up and followed the ball.
-Outfielders feel sluggish. I'd like to see more fluiditity to their movement.
Got in a couple of games last night.
As always, the pitching is incredibly fun. LOVE gesture pitching.
Yeah, I saw some herky-jerky movements from time to time. It could be smoother.
But overall, I really liked what I saw/played. Hit variety seems to be great and the new fielding mechanics are great. I love how I can tell the difference between one fielder from the next.
Overall, I really enjoyed it and can't wait to pick it up next week.
I was a huge fan of MLB 2K10 last year and I thought they finally made a fun game. I had high hopes for this year's edition but boy am I disappointed now after playing 5 games with the demo.
- I just did a quick scan of the posts here and I am surprised nobody (I think?) mentioned this. In the demo the CPU lays off 90% of balls and swings at 90% of the strikes. What the heck is going on with the ultra aggressive AI? This wasn't a problem at all in the final version last year but it is now back and as bad as ever. I pray to the baseball video game gods that the final version won't be like this.
- The infield defense control is pretty much still automatic. I don't even have to move my stick and my infielders will field the balls with god-like reflexes. This is BAD.
- Way too many hard hit balls off the bat, especially on infield grounders. Everything is hit 200MPH and is a laser shot directly at someone, but back to my previous point, the automatic infielders will get to them with superhuman speed.
- The new fielding camera after you hit the ball is horrible. It's absolutely IMPOSSIBLE to tell if a flyball will be an out or a gapper or blooper because the ball completely disappears from the user's view and there are no landing marks, depth indicator, or anything else to help you judge how the ball is traveling and where it might end up.
Those are the main gameplay issues I have right now. Obviously there are the framerate problems everyone mentioned on foul or pop-ups and I also saw 1 glitch when Andrian Beltre hit a ball off the right field wall at AT&T Park, it bounced into Cody Ross's glove, and it was called a homerun. But these are techincal glitches that can be fixed. I am more concerned with the underlying gameplay issues and I am majorly disappointed.
I've played both demos, my thoughts on 2K specifically are:
+ I prefer the hitting, pitching, and throwing analog controls of 2K. Just feels more natural to me.
+ I love all of the stats 2K throws at you. Most baseball fans are probably stat junkies, so this is a really big plus and great for them to have.
+ The fielding is most definitely improved over 2K10, which was drastically needed
- The framerate just doesn't feel as steady as it should be. It's not horrible, it's not gamebreaking, but it just doesn't feel as smooth as the other game. Hopefully the PC version doesn't have this issue, which I would expect it not to.
- Too bad that there weren't any announcers in the demo, just to have a comparison. But if it's at least as good as 2K10, they'll be fine.
- The graphics are again, not horrible, but not as good as the other game. Once again though I expect the PC version to look better, and I would imagine it won't be as much of an issue there.
I was going to get The Show for PS3, but I've decided instead to get 2K11 on the PC. 1) The mods of PC always increase the quality of the game, 2) It's half the price, and 3) 2K11 really is a comparable game at this point. I understand all of the "little things" that The Show does amazingly well, but really at some point those just aren't a big deal to me. The game of 2K is definitely fun to play, and that's what matters. So that's what I'll be going with this year.
Man, I wish I saw what some of you PS3 guys were seeing, as I was REALLY pulling for 2K this year... but this darn game just looks downright awful to me, and definitely like a step back from last years, which I thought looked pretty good! Even the menus have a somewhat low-textured look to them. This just makes me sad
I'll just have to wait and see on the final retail reviews/impressions I guess. The good news though, is the gameplay has definitely been improved, so for you 360 guys, where it sounds like the graphics definitely look better, you should have a VERY solid game on your hands.
change the difficulty in your profile to hard... that'll kill any automatic feeling you've been seeing. And it will make you wish it was back in there
nothing is more frustrating than having your guy stand there like a statue as you delay a second to figure out which guy you're controlling, only to let a ball that should have been an out end up a hit.
Thanks for the suggestion, I will give that a shot, although to be honest at this point I don't know if the automatic feeling is a blessing or a curse. Like I said, the balls are usually hit so hard and the infield in this game feels so small, I don't know if I can actually field those hot shots if it is not automatic, lol
No, it is for us to say AND for them to see and correct. We are "their" customers and we have every god given American right to express any legitimate concerns that we may have. For a $60 game, they better at least stop and listen.
Also, I'm with Dickdalewood. I am extremely dissapointed with the demo on the PS3. I don't have an xbox, so I'm sure if its good there, but they took a major step back IMO. I will still give it a rent first and see how the final build looks.
I walked away with mixed feelings from this demo. There were moments of "hey this is nice" to "ughh WTF"! Overall there is definitely improvement but from what was described in the developer blogs I am not particularly seeing at the moment. This game is definitely going to need some slider love as it seems out of balance at times.
The good, the bad, the ugly:
The Good:
-I played the demo on the 360 and thought the color palette was significantly improved over last year.
-I like the graphical representation on the overlays in the opening scenes.
-Animations seemed to be a little more fluid especially during fielding but at times there was also a disconnect.
-I liked the delay in revealing the landing spot for fly-balls based on ratings.
-Pitching still felt good but untouched (slider wise) it is still too easy to paint.
-They have some sweet break-up plays at second base. They were believable when they occurred.
-The differentiation in bats sounds seems to be improved as different grades of contact gave off the appropriate sound.
-I have a love hate relationship with this post hitting cam. I like it on the infield plays but don't really enjoy it on the outfield plays as you feel too far removed. On several hits in the outfield I could not see the ball so it was hard to focus on what was actually happening. I like the concept but not sure how to make it better.
The Bad (Not necessarily terrible):
-Bunt physics are bad as the ball takes some weird trajectories off the bat. Also bunted balls seem to be hit too hard overall.
-The ground ball friction seems to be too much especially in the outfield. It appears to be suffering from Show-itis when they had it a few years back where a ground ball would die in the middle of the grass never reaching the wall in a lot of situations.
-Too many line drive outs in the infield. Hopefully some tuning can be address this but it became redundant.
-While fielding showed signs of improvement the animations chosen for certain throws were not warranted for the situation. On routine grounders fielders were doing these acrobatic fielding animations which were over the top for the situation.
-Something that was prevalent in 10 was how fielders covered when a play is unfolding. The pitcher is probably the worst culprit as he seems to be all over the place except for where he is supposed to be with backing up a play.
-Post fielding animations seemed to be unfinished. Fielders will throw the ball, act naturally and then automatically stop like they are unplugged. It really gives you a disconnect from the action.
-The pace of the fielding seems to have a little stuck in the mud feeling. I mean its moving but seems to develop slow. Also the throws seem to be slow and a little floaty. The only one who seems to have some oomph on their throw is the catcher throwing the ball back to the pitcher.
-I am still perplexed by this opposite field HR dilemma. I can rip and pull the ball with ease but when it comes to a home run the closest I have come to pulling the ball is center field. All the others were opposite field. Seems odd to me especially since they made special mention of it being addressed. Also, I had no suspenseful HR's, all were no doubter's. I noticed with the no doubters the outfielders don't move they just swivel in place which looks really bad.
-The throwing meter seems a little pedestrian to me. I am sure we can up the difficulty on it but feels far too simple and a little boring. On a positive note it does seem responsive and reacts according to your input.
-I know people have mentioned about liking the ball physics/ hit variety in this game but I just don't see it. With some at bats visually I saw what was going to be a certain type hit but behind the scenes it appeared like the hit was being forced to do something else. I did not walk away impressed on this front.
-No practice swing? Or is there a certain button other then the stick?
The Ugly:
I don't have anything major that is truly horrendous. The only thing I would mention is that the the ball icon/pitch break indicator is grossly out of proportion with the rest of the game. I am sure turning it off solves that problem!
Even though my "bad" list is a little lengthy I walked away feeling there were some positive strides made in the game. It still needs work as far as overall game flow goes as it is a little rough around the edges at times. Overall there will be two viable choices this year for a baseball game as each has something different to offer with each one having its own interpretation of the sport.
I know a lot of people seem to judge the whole game based on a demo from who knows what earlier build of this game. Last year's demo had all kinds of issues but the retail version was A LOT better. I hope people just realize that this is a DEMO and that some of the problems they are seeing will not be in the full game.
