To be honest, I really don't notice that much of a difference with this new patch. Kick return blocking is tweaked (I wouldn't necessarily say improved). Now the norm is getting between the 20-30 yard line, instead of 15-20 like before. I did play an online game just now and nearly broke one with Percy Harvin where the blocking was actually alright though.

In my online game, I was the Vikings and the other guy was the Lions. The final score was 38-35 for me with both of us having around 400 yards of total offense. I think we both punted once each....might have been 2 each, not sure.

About the defense, I notice guys in zones making a few more plays here and there by diving to swat the ball and things like that but it's still not as hard as Madden 10 to burn someone deep.

Another thing I've noticed is that it seems I'm breaking a lot of runs that are over 4 yards or so. Keep in mind I have only played an online game and the final Madden Moment using the Colts in the Super Bowl, but that's just what I've noticed. Haven't really had any minimal positive gains rushing like 1-3 yards a pop. It's either been a medium to big gain or a negative one.

Those are my impressions for now. Not much I know, but my sample size is small. What I'm most interested in is how this is going to affect the gameplay in Online Franchise when you're playing against sim vets like I am. I never had that much of a beef with this year's Madden, so keep that in mind as well. IMO the people that never liked this game in the first place won't change their mind after this patch and the same goes with the people that already liked the game or don't mind it like I do.

Downloaded it on 360 before work this morning and knocked a game out.

Without changing sliders, I noticed:
  • Run defense for the CPU is much improved. I have HB Hawthorne in his second year (he's quite beastly) and a good OL and I was getting shut down compared to pre-patch. Not against a good front seven, either. First eight rushes for eight yards.
  • Kickoff returns have definitely changed. Still pinning the CPU well behind the 20, but my kickoff returns were too easy. I generally just run forward, as to not have ridiculous return stats, but even doing that, I was starting past the 30 each time. Most of the kicks were only to the 12 by the CPU. But that's fixable with the sliders.
  • Pass defense for the CPU seemed improved... or perhaps it's because I couldn't establish a running game. In the first three games, I had 7 TD/1 INT passing. This game, I had 2 TD/3 INT. I lost by 20 points. Their CB's had two mid-80 ratings and two in their fifties. Average FS/SS.
I had the broken tackle slider at 10 for the CPU for my sliders before the patch and felt I had a really good set up for the running game. Post patch, my guys were tackling HB Turner first touch every time. Moved it up to 24 towards the beginning of the game with no real change. Moved it to 50 a bit later and then back down to 30... Turner ended up with 225 yards rushing against me. Not overwelming because of broken tackles, just my defense getting plowed over by the blocking.

I'll have to play more to really get a feel for the actual effects. The kick off returns and CPU run defense were the most noticable, by far. Not sure if the 3 INTs are because of the pass defense changes yet, though.

EDIT: No injuries during the game. 13 minute quarters, 25 second run-off. Play-action was hit-or-miss. A couple were immediate sacks, a couple worked as you'd expect.

Ran a few plays and I can tell play action is fixed. That's all I really wanted to see.

I have a question regarding the patches. I took my XBOX to a friend's house that high speed internet. I hooked up the XBOX and downloaded the rosters and updates. Do the updates save on your hard drive or do I need to keep it connected to the internet for the updates? I wasn't sure if I took it back home and did not connect it to the internet if it would keep the updates saved. Thanks!

Played one game last night, 49ers (CPU) @ Chiefs (me). 49ers won 38-17. I turned the ball over 4 times, 3 on interceptions. The patch really seemed to tighten up CPU pass defense as I wasn't able to fit balls into spots I had been able to pre-patch as the CPU has much better awareness now in coverages.

SF returned an INT and a fumble for a TD, so that's how the score was so high for them.

As for the gameplay, here's what I saw using Custom Sliders at 14, 14, 13, 13 and Slow Game Speed with 50 Threshold:

-Player accelerated to top speed faster than before. I was using Derrick Johnson on D and pre-patch, I'd never be able to cover the flats b/c my guy would get stuck strafing and wouldn't get to where he needed to be in time to make a play. Now, it feels as though the player movement as been freed up a bit, allowing you to have more control of your player.

-It's a lot tougher to run the ball now, which is a good thing. Pre-patch, you could average 5-6 yards a carry without even trying.

-CPU offense is a threat again. 49ers had good balance, calling 20 passing plays and 27 run plays. Gore had over 100 yards rushing (averaged around 5 ypc) and A. Smith completed 14-of-20 passes. Sure that is 70% but most of his passes were safe throws, so not shocking. I did see 2 throws that completely missed the intended target.

-I didn't notice a difference with the kick meter.

-I was not a fan of the Gameflow plays I was given with the Chiefs. Only 10 run plays were called. I know you'll look at the score and see I lost by 3 touchdowns but late in the 3rd quarter, the game was tied at 14, so it wasn't a blowout the entire game. I'd like to see more balance in the playcalling as I don't want to be throwing every play. Perhaps I'll have to download the created Gameplans to get this to work better.

That's all I've got for now. I think that the patch did a lot of good things, so I'm happy.

Now they just need to add field degradation, dirty uniforms , and helmet scarring and I'll be a happy man!!! I know most of the stadiums in the league have artificial turf but the ones that don't it really would be nice... I mean if NCAA can do please guys just add the code to madden... This is the closest a madden game has been to 2 k5 I'm my opinion if they added that and just a little more on the end of the week wrap ups I think all the 2 k5 talk would end and this is coming from a 2k homer.

# 128 MrCheese @ 09/24/10 10:28 AM
well the patch helped out with thy spy blitz, but you can bring heat up the middle pretty easy. Just about any inside blitz is going to get through. I've played about 4 games online after the patch, and everyone is bringing major heat up the middle, and it all gets through. I thought the spy blitz was fairly easy to stop, but the heat coming up the middle seems just as good with normal blitz packages going up the middle. Of course this leaves everyone in man coverage =D

The Zone D is improved, you can actually get stops on D with your LB in zone coverage. I've had a few coverage sacks while in zone, which I haven't had in this years game until yesterday.

Kick meter is fine, however its way too easy to get the onside kick rolling. If you onside kick every time, you will get 1 or 2 of those back during the game. I don't know why you would do anything else.

Another note worth mentioning from my game this morning is that two of my three INT's were brought back for touchdwons. Out of the countless games I played pre-patch, I'm pretty sure this has never happened.

They just hit the jets and ran straight back without a problem. And they weren't Deion-style picks swiping comeback or out routes and taking it down the sidelines. Both of them were quite a few yards down field and in/near the hash marks.

someone left a message to Ian on twitter bout the kicking meter and he responded...how about someone leave him a message about the cut scenes/pre-game comparisons that were supposed to be unlocked and about the dirty uniforms/scarred up helmets/field degradation. With those things fixed, i will be completely 100% happy.

My game didnt finish that bad, loss 42-28 that were caused from some delay routes that Ware wouldnt cover properly/at all and some nano caused fumbles that were later prevented by having my backs block

# 135 extremeskins04 @ 09/24/10 01:04 PM
You're complaining about Patrick Willis and nano's? *confused*

That was fixed already. I don't have to do that. I can't remember exactly what the settings have to be and I'm not at home to check, but you can set it up so you don't have to hit the D-Pad to activate the calls.

I believe he is talking about actually moving the group you have selected, not to activate the call.

For instance, press LB to select line, check. but then to press left/right to shift, down to pinch, up to spread - you have to use the D pad and the left stick will not accomplish this.
