NBA 2K10 News Post

I and a few others were lucky enough to attend the NBA 2K10 launch party here in NYC.

We were given full copies of the game and are willing to answer questions.

The only thing I'm going to tell you guys right now:

NO QUESTIONS ABOUT RATINGS. We already post them in the NBA 2K10 screenshots section.

Ok, let the madness begin.

Ah thanks Pared for answering my qs, that sux that the CPU doesn't do that, i thought it added more authenticity when the CPU did that cause in a real NBA game the players want to conserve their energy and set up a play while walking up with the ball...

Maybe the CPU will start walking when you lower the game speed or sumthing.

I've been meaning to do that jr. My apologies and thanks for being patient.

Next opportunity I'll check for you guys.

Some thoughts on the defensive rotations:

There are times when players come over to help out and don't stand in the correct spots in a help scenario. It's fundamentally incorrect in some instances. When you get the game, you'll see what I mean.

Also, the help D tends to leave guys open on the perimeter a LOT. It's nice, but sometimes the help D isn't needed. This was something I felt Live did last year and I'm hoping they cleaned up.

Overall, I would say Live's help defense routines from last year were a bit better, but they also forced the shooter into a lot of bad shots against their will. I guess you guys have to pick your poison.

I think they may have changed it as a way to avoid the CPU from not being to run plays in time. They get to half court faster, they can set up faster. At least, that's the logic I would think they used.

I'm sure it aided in helping the players get to their spots to run a play.

Another thing on plays:

They break way too often. For seemingly no reason similar to last year. The only upside is the players don't stop moving this year. They keep trying to get open and create an opportunity to score.

Hey, if some can go through the thread and post the links to my comments I would appreciate it. I would like to organize my thoughts. Should've thought of that before.

Have any of you been able to check on the Legends rosters yet? Are they the same as last year? Is Abdul-Jabbar back in the game? Are Barkley, Reggie, Stockton, Payton, and Jordan finally back in the game?

# 785 Pared @ 09/27/09 03:56 PM
Yes.

I think I know what the problem is. The CPU has a perfect shot release. That is what is causing the high shooting %'s.

Seems to me, while I have been using equal shooting sliders for both the CPU and Human, I may need to have the CPU's numbers below that of a human to get a realistic output of stats. Things are better than last year but not good enough for my tastes.

But I hope to have something available so guys can play on All-Star, Superstar, Pro... whatever. The sliders seem to work well on each difficulty.

Here are three things I've seen that definitely are worth mentioning:

1) The CPU passes off the backboard and turns it over way too often. This happens during inbounds plays and baseline passes.

2) There is one instance where the CPU runs the break and the ball handler passes the ball behind his teammate. Now, at first I thought it was an unforced turnover and liked it. But I've seen the same exact scenario happen repeatedly. Looks to me like it's just a broken routine during the break.

3) I can completely abuse the quick pick and roll. At first, the CPU doubles me and does not allow me to get a pass off after about the 2nd or 3rd time. However, I kept at it and the CPU does not have guys fill the paint or at least cheat enough to deflect the pass in there.

Blah.
Is this during online team-up or offline play?? I'm hoping it's the former.

Also, does anyone know what the "Rumor Mill" is in Association Mode? (I think I saw it in Steve's pics). Is it just another name for the "trading block" or is it more in-depth and talk about a variety of things?

Yeah, someone said last year that the CPU has a perfect shot release every time. I just don't understand this. What is the point of ratings if the CPU releases it perfectly in every situation? The difference between a great shooter and a mediocre streaky shooter is that the great shooter comes closest to replicating perfect form each time he shoots. Only great defense can make a great shooter alter his release.

In the video games, EVERYONE is playing by the rules of a great shooter.

Mediocre defense results in percentages in the high 40s, low 50s. Great defense can put an average team in the mid 30s, very low 40s. I haven't seen games accurately reflect this yet. I have a feeling that some of the flaws in these games is engineered to enhance the challenge.

Just don't get it when the tools seem to be there. The consistency rating is brilliant, just for this particular issue, but it's not reflected in CPU play, since they always release it perfectly, like little robots.

This is a problem for a team like Boston. Their dominant color is green and their secondary color is white. So there is no way to get the white at home/black on the road combination without manually changing it each time.

Why can't 2k just do it like this:

Set up each jersey and specify it with a primary color and a secondary color. When you edit your player, have the following options:

White/Black/Primary jersey color/Secondary jersey color

AND

Allow the user to specify the primary jersey color and secondary jersey color somewhere.

Would make life THAT much easier.

It thought the entire purpose of Team color/2nd Team color was to allow changing colors with the jerseys.

Perhaps they did it with some teams. Boston was not one of them.

And you only get to see your away jersey in the Edit Player screen. Why can't I click in the left thumbstick, get a drop down menu and select the jersey the player is wearing so I can see how it looks? Right now I have to go into the game and check for each jersey.

Design decisions, fellas...
Hey Pared, im confused now!

If you change acessories color to WHITE all acessories INCLUDE HEADBAND show white in home or road? If you change before the game to white, Boston headband apears white in home games????

Or Just change body acessories colors??? I dont understand if 2k put "headband" in acessories... can you put some screen about this ?

And thks for informations man!

Can you hire real coaches like Avery Johnson, or Jeff Van Gundy in Association mode? Also could you post pictures of James Johnson, Tyrus Thomas and Tarrence Williams?

Thanks.

Pared,

Again, thanks for answering all of our questions. I just have two quick ones I was hoping to get answered since yesterday. Maybe you could help out.

1. Are Serge Ibaka and Byron Mullens on the Thunder roster or their NBDL roster?

2. Is there a Sonics throwback uni in the game?

Thanks so much.

Would you guys mind setting up a small online league and discussing any new features that may be there? I just saw the association vids and was blown away by the presentation. I'd love to know if any of the cool commentary or stat overlays made it into the online leagues.

# 797 Pared @ 09/27/09 06:56 PM
You CAN do two people on the same team when inviting a friend to play in your franchise.

Oh, and I can't see any signature defensive styles, just players playing tighter than others. Battier does not put his hand in the shooters face.

Also, no Sonics throwbacks from the already available jerseys.

4 Player team-up game... lag is certainly noticeable. Not a good sign considering there's technically not a lot of people on the servers right now.

Hopefully the new servers aren't ready and that's the reason.

Just a reminder about the legends: who they are and who got signature moves?
Thx in advance!

Pared, does it seem like you can create a 90+ player easily from your brief experience with it?
