+ I truly enjoyed the dynamic feel of the inputs when it came to dribbling the rock. Especially when I was able to chain moves together with precision.

+ The team interaction with each other is one of the most beautiful things I have seen in a videogame. (When I played as the Magic and V.C. was taking care of business for me, it seemed as though Kobe got p.o. because V.C. was stilling his shine and Kobe began to force the action.)

+ The off-ball movement was very intuitive when I bumbled my play call precision. They moved to spaces to help me not blow the posession and get into correct spacing to make good shots.

+ DNA, DNA, DNA! By understanding the game of a player it truly helped me understand what I could do and what would get me burned. (Don't sleep on D. Fish by trying to stop Kobe or you will get punished from deep)

Now my Negatives:

- Rebounding and boxing out is a major flaw that I see in this game. There should be know reason that if I have position to grab the rebound that the ball should be hitting the floor and players just looking at the ball with no urgency to get it. I mean it is like the players are locked into position with no where to go and the PG comes from top of the key to get the ball

- It seems at times that players do not know where the ball is on Defense and do not turn properly to stop the player from going where he wants to go. I do not know if that is because it is a demo or a glitch that I may be getting. However it happens a little to frequent.

- I still see warp dunks happening all the time. It is though there is no way to stop the warp from the Superstars when they want to dunk on you. I can literally get D. Howard to dunk on every transition if I pass the ball to him on the elbow and hit turbo+shoot. It is unstoppable.

I am going to play some more and see how much more fun I can have, but I must admit even with the minor flaws this game is fun as H***! Give them one more season to work out the minor bugs and Basketball gaming will be the best sports genre in gaming. Kudos to Mike and Steph for bringing my nostalgia back since I first played Lakers v Celtics on a PC.

+
you must have been playing on rookie or pro b/c i could never get into the lane and dunk everytime w/ dwight howard like you are saying. The laker d is very good on allstar and very solid on superstar. So i suggest you to bump the level up some.

Another thing I like is that players seem so smart. I like the cuts to the basket. They actually seem like they're playing basketball. (What's funny is that I'm using what I've learned about basketball in the Draft Combine to help me in this game - LOL!!!)

I also like the fact that the computer makes mistakes and even falls for the occasional pump-fake.

Finally, I like the fact that they don't always try to feed it to the PG first.

Definitely an awesome upgrade. Really impressed with the job they have done on this game. Even though I like football more, I will be playing a basketball game much more this year. They just seem to bring more to the table. The question now is which game.

Great year for us as gamers!

Not over-the-moon with this, but Czar's thought that it wasn't as good as the final reassured me a bit.

Positives:

Love the movement, I feel in control of basic dribbling (the wide backwards turn when you jam LS the opposite direction and slightly back is a little wonky, but that's about it), the RS dribbles are responsive, and I love being able to explode out.

My favorite part so far is the collection of moving, stepback, and running jumpers -- using Kobe and nailing the stepback fade from the elbow is a thing of beauty. I didn't have any problems getting what I wanted, including a fading bank shot with VC that was really pretty.

The driving layup and dunk control will take a little getting used to, mainly because I'm not used to having the 2-step/Euro step options as well as having to focus so much attention on LS when shooting. I like all the options though and it felt good the few times I was able to Iso and drive into the paint then finish on the side I wanted to.

The overall look of the game is very nice. I think I'll probably adjust my TV settings a bit to tone the brightness down, but everything looks very crisp and I didn't have a problem with any of the player models. Kobe looks amazing IMO and the skin textures are FN-esque.

I actually didn't have too hard of a time playing defense on perimeter players. Like Czar said, if you use the angles and feather the LS instead of jamming it in different directions, don't reach, don't (for the love of god) use the RS "hands-up" pose, you can prevent penetration and force them into a tough shot. Sometimes it seems like you can't prevent them drawing a foul (don't contest or anything but they still get a shoulder into you and get the whistle), but I didn't feel the need for a defensive lock button or anything. Contesting felt good.

Off-ball control and passing is easy to use. I don't know what Ray is complaining about really, I was able to icon pass fine with LT -- just hit the button quickly and you can even continue holding LT and make multiple passes. I had to get used to LT being the button, but other than that, I didn't have much problem. Direct passing is still pretty crappy, but I don't think there will ever be a solution to that when you point the LS at 2 players.. inevitably it'll be the wrong one about half of the time. I love being able to quickly control an off-ball man and run him to his spot... had some really nice catch-and-shoots with Pietrus and Lewis just by using that quickly and rubbing the defender off of Dwight or someone.

Negatives:

Don't like that you can't really use LT passing when you're running a playset. Seemed like it would cancel the play most of the time when I'd icon pass to the correct man. Having to use normal passing for plays would be a bummer because it still kinda sucks... I think a good idea would be making it so if the left stick is neutral and you press 'A' when it's glowing above the designated man, it passes him the ball. That would eliminate the confusion the other poster mentioned as well.

Is there a "defensive switch" button? This was driving me crazy -- in fast break situations/pick and rolls when you get switched off, there was no way to reliably get back on your man. Even when I would get up close to my designated man (i.e. Kobe on Vince), the previous defender would often stay there. I was tapping LT and RB (thinking maybe defensive assist would take me to the right man) but no dice. This is a MUST for team play online and just in general IMO.. can't run a smart defense without the ability to call people off and get back to your original man. That's especially true since matchups are such a big part of this year's game.

I found it very hard to play defense when the offensive player was moving quickly. Granted, that may be realistic, but it seemed as if every time they had a running start in the fastbreak, they managed to weasel around me and score. Sometimes it was contested, but it just seemed like you can't move nearly fast enough backwards (even turning around to run properly) to stop the break. This is another one where it's probably me not being used to it, but it stood out to me as annoying.

Few too many offensive boards for my liking (the CPU). Again, might not understand the boxing out mechanic.. probably my fault.

Gotta get used to pick and roll control -- seemed like they rarely set the screen correctly and I had people like VC occasionally setting screens (which was probably my fault since you can choose) instead of bigs. Just a little confusing and didn't work as well as last year (which is probably a good thing I suppose, since it was a money play).

Animations are still not entirely natural-looking... warping on rebounds and blocks is the main issue, but also the post-play cuts and running back (as has been mentioned from the other videos) look a bit strange, like they fast-forward briefly. I didn't have too many head-scratchers in-game aside from a VC standing dunk under the rim, but in the hangar, there were definitely some weird dunk animations.

Loose balls and rebounding is not as tight as I'd hoped. There were several times when a ball would get deflected or stolen and my players would be in position but would just kinda stand there... I'd see some amazing-looking hustle sequences, but then randomly nobody would go get the ball after all that effort. I think I just don't completely understand how rebounding works -- I thought it was "Hold Y to box out, release to jump" and it seems like that sometimes.. but like on free throws as soon as you touch Y they jump for it. Devs, can you clarify the rebounding controls a bit for us?

Overall though I had a good time with it. I know I'll be playing the hell out of it in the next few weeks, so I think a lot of the issues were due to me not really knowing what I'm doing. Also, I recognize that it's a demo and not the ironed-out final... Czar's thoughts reinforce that, so I'm not worried that I won't be as happy with the game as I thought. Seems like a lot of the appeal is watching how the different players and teams react to matchups, etc. and we don't get much of that at all in an 8-minute game with the same 2 teams and few subs. The core mechanics seem very good and it definitely forces you to run an offense rather than just dribble your way to the rack. Gonna spend some more time with it this afternoon, but probably won't be able to capture and psot anything until very late tonight or tomorrow.

I guess since I play with the Lakers, I really love this demo and at the same time I have things I really dislike!

We all know I'm a graphics whore and I truly love the player faces, they are spot on! I haven't seen 1 Video or Screenshot, that gives you the truth detail of these guys, they are just amazing looking. Just look at Lebron and Wade when they entered the Hanger, spot freak'n on! Kobe looks like KB, Artest looks like himself, etc. Even Farmar coming off the bench! Graphics are spot on, to say that they are ok, is an understatement or just pure hating! I've said it many times in the past EA sports has the best Graphics Engine I have ever seen, period! Staples looks great, I hope they get rid of those damn towels during regular season.

Gameplay oh! Gameplay! Is it bad, no it's not bad at all, is it great or good. Well it's not bad! Just a new muthaluvin learning curve, I mean I can still maintain, but out of all the NBA Live games I've played they've switched it up and now I have to learn a whole new scheme of everything, passing, shooting, fast breaks, OMG! Why!!!!! lol Just joking!!!

But game feels great, just got to start over on learning how an NBA Live game plays. Commentary was ok, it changed from same to someone different at different points of the game. But they don't just hold conversations like they did in Live 06,07, 08, and 09! Seems like only one guy was there for 10 and then Steve Kerr comes from the bathroom and jumps in.

Other than that, I've only played 1 game so far, before I leave out the door, will play more in a few hours and then I'll make a few videos. A few in the Hangar to show off different players moves and jumpers, since we have the ability to control all the stars...

Overall I like it, and once I get use to the new control mechanics on the court, I'll love it, everything else is relatively great!

Good Job, Marcus, Mike and Ryan! Can't wait to see what you guys help out with on the NCAA BB side...you know College Basketball is my heart! NBA is my soul....lol Basketball is my Passion....so keep the joy rolling with great elements in the gaming zones...

no post up button? Is this true, if so, HOW!

# 206 Stumbleweed @ 09/11/09 12:59 PM
Yeah I don't like that decision by either game, but them's the breaks I guess. I'll have to take Mike's advice and lightly move towards the man and see if it's more reliable. I didn't have much problem engaging when I was deep, but when I was using someone other than a big man on the elbow area, it was hard to get.

Not to mention if another human is guarding me, I have to hope he doesn't swipe the ball out of my hand as I just slowly walk up to them.

Wow. Game is very intuitive response is amazing. I feel "free" like I could what I want lol. I tried to do the kobe spin around jumper in the 2k trailer because contextually it feels like its possible. Everything just makes sense. Gone are the days of tapping up on the R stick to spin. Wow. Game is amazing. I can't wait for full retail and to see what the patches have in store.

# 209 Stumbleweed @ 09/11/09 01:07 PM
To condense my post and possibly get an answer from the devs (or people who are at home and able to play the game or just know more than I do):

Is there a defensive switch button? How do you tell your teammate to bugger off and let you defend your man after a switch?

Can you pass with anything other than normal (A) passing when running plays? I didn't try it with Freestyle passing, but I tried with LT icons and it canceled the play every time, even if I sent it to the right man.

Can you guys expand on the rebounding controls? Seems like lots of people are having issues with that, specifically boxing out and when Y is that and when it's jump for the ball.

# 210 youngfaze01 @ 09/11/09 01:17 PM
I'm going to be honest. I was highly disappointed with the "demo", I'm sure the actual game is going to be closer to that. I still felt that unresponsive move from time to time. Way better than 09 IMO. Graphics are wonderful. But still not on 2k level to me. That's just me. If anyone goes against my word, so be it, I could care less.

# 211 Jano @ 09/11/09 01:25 PM
Stumble when running the plays make sure the button is lit up before you throw it to someone.

I was doing the same thing until I realized that I hadn't initialized the play yet getting players to hit that damn circle can be difficult. Because the controls are so sensitive.

Back to my impressions one thing I really liked about the game was how much DNA played a part in the game. Which lead to certain players to have certain limitations.

Fisher when I was playing are good at initiating the Off but terrible when they try and score in the halfcourt. But on the flipside I could push it with him in transition for quick buckets.

Where as Artest was the opposite he was great in the halfcourt posting up and creating his own shot. But in transition he wasn't all that effective because he had so much weight and wasn't as fluid.

Same thing held true for post players Gasol was a much different beast then Bynum. I can't wait until I get home so I can run w/ the Magic and see if the same things hold true for them.

I think it was just the hangar cause once I played the game they weren't so light.

Ohhhh Noooo. This game is just as spaztaztic as ever. It's STILL a struggle to get them to do a simple jumpshot-nuff said.

THE ENGINE!!!!! THIS HORRENDOUS ENGINE!!!!! The same problem as Madden. EA just doesn't get it. Basing a sports game 90% off of animations is not simulation, not fun, and certainly does not "give the user more control". Use the Havok engine, or...something. The future is ragdoll physics (like real life), NOT animations. It's so clear.....EA is for the kids, and 2K is for the adults (Was that too much? I can never tell.). I've never played Fifa or NHL, but, those games get alot of praise. Maybe EA should just stick to hockey, and soccer.

I couldn't wait to run back to 2K10 Draft Combine, and its smooooth gameplay-which gives the user TOTAL control.

As easy as this decision is, just imagine how easy it would be to choose a new 2K football game over Madden!
Not needed...

I'm familiar with Live's playcalling.. I know to wait until it lights up and all that. My issue is that if you bring up icons and pass the designated man the ball, it stops the play (or did all of the times I tried it anyway), thus forcing you to use regular A button passing, which is still pretty inaccurate. I didn't try Freestyle, so if someone has the game available, see if you can use that on the plays.

# 215 Melman @ 09/11/09 01:34 PM
Overall I liked the demo...from a Live standpoint, this is the best Live I've played. Definately gonna take some time to get used to the controls (Im a 2k guy) I did get stripped alot. Im cool with that.....for now (until i get better with the controls).

It was hard to play good D. I Ball hogged with Kobe for the most part, some of the shots he made were hmmm...some of the arc trajectory on his shots that would go in didnt seem realistic. but its not that big a deal for me. I do wish some of the buttons on D were more responsice as far as going for a steal or block. Rebounds were ok on some possesions and on some others they seemed to be kinda ackward.

The Sig shots are great, crowd is great, staples organ, graphics, nice. Freethrows are better tweaked this year as well.

All in all I gotta play this game more before i can give a final grade. Im at work now but when I get home Im gonna disect this game.

Is this the same NBA Live series of past? This is amazingly different. All the moves you have at your control. Things are just so different. I'm not getting my hopes to high though.

Can this be the game that finally turns me over from NBA 2K series? I don't know but from the looks & feel it's gonna be a definite possibility. However, gameplay is just a part of what I want in a solid basketball game. Let's see about the franchise/dynasty mode for me.

I can't believe all the moves you have available from the controls. This is an awesome advancement for NBA Live. I can only say WOW at this point especially in comparison to past titles. Thanks!

# 217 Eski33 @ 09/11/09 01:36 PM
The demo is outstanding. I haven't owned an NBA game in years and this year's Live is miles ahead of what EA has done. The visuals and Finals presentation are outstanding. The controls are also back in the gamer's hands. No more suck-in animations....

Hopefully they use this same engine for NCAA.....

Hmm... I was able to get the plays going with the icons don't know what the problem is for you.

Were you making quick passes or did you let the players settle in their spots?

With icon passing I know that you have to make sure you let the player settle in his spot because if not it thinks you are trying to do something else.

This same thing used to happen in 09 for me sometimes.

# 219 Stumbleweed @ 09/11/09 01:41 PM
Okay I'll mess with it some more.. I played about 15 games but wasn't always running plays so I didn't get a ton of time with it. Seemed like I didn't have that problem in Live 09 but I was having issues this morning. Chalk that one up to me being an idiot I guess.

# 220 Jano @ 09/11/09 01:46 PM
Lol man there's a lot to get used to this year but I think if I keep playing I think its going to one fun experience.

The AI feels great this year in one game Lewis lit me up for 4 treys. I was screaming at Gasol to get out on him every time.

Nelson lit me up in another game was just abusing me off the dribble can't wait to see how the Lakeshow plays when I get home.
