The thing I was the most impressed with is overal graphic improvements and the way the QBs throw the ball now. It actually looks and feels like you are throwing a pass. I love how LBs and Dbs now swat at the ball and players jump sideways now instead of straight up like on Madden 09. The lob and over the shoulder passes are sweet. The passing game is much improved now flares and screens work a lot better and the receiving animations are much improved.
The thing least impressive was the running game. EA seems unable to get run blocking, running lanes, and running collisions right. It never feels like your runner has any weight or momentum. I've played RB my whole life and when your running your normally leaning forward and using a digging motion but on Maden its almost like all the players are on a sheet of glass on top of the field. I would also love to see a crack back block from a receiver while running a sweep where he absolutely lays a LB or DE out. I do like the fact that your RB can now reach the corners on sweeps and outrun DEs and LBs but running through lanes, contact and collisions in traffic need some work. RBs natrually make themselves smaller when running through traffic in anticipation of contact, the same with wide receivers when they make a catch in traffic coming across the middle. Also, right before contacts runners will lift and dip their shoulders in hopes of trucking defenders and the juke moves and spin moves look unrealistic.
Overall I will say that this is a huge step in the right direction at least we've seen change and growth and the presentation, graphics, and gameplay is better than last year and again this is only the demo so I'm thinking the game itself will be a big improvement...holla!
Nice assessment man. I agree 100%.

I really miss individual assignments for last gen(shade in/out, press/loose coverage) Those few options alone would help a great deal.

I agree. Definetley felt different with Big Ben vs. Warner. Same for the running backs to a certain degree. I am sure you will see it more between a speed back and a bigger back IE Jacobs.

I had a few protak moments in the games I played last night. They were ok, only because I feel the offensive player has more pull or an edge to gain yards thru momentum instead of the defense. I was hoping to see defenders gang tackle and stop forward progress to which they "drive" the ball carrier back until the whistle is blown. Seemed like they just drop the ball carrier straight down. And also, when one defender grabs the ball carrier to stop him momentarily, I wanted to see another defender finish him off, which would have been great for forced fumbles. It seems like the protak would be forced in such situations instead of what I just mentioned. It's ok, but can definitely get better.

I personally think that the jams on WRs last way too long and Madden still ignores the 5yd chuck rule. Very annoying.

I've played both versions of the demo, and I did not come away disappointed. Which isn't to say that I was absolutely blown out of the water either...but I think what happens with the OS'ers here is that there is so much anticipation for upcoming games, and we put so much effort into checking out new footage and features (and communicating with developers) that by the time you actually play the game, you find yourself expecting a dramatically different product, even though its the same company, same underlying engine, etc.

Ian said something to the effect that he wanted this to be the game that will make people stop talking about NFL 2k5. I'm not sure if that's even realistic or not, but at the very least, this should be the game that stops people from harkening back to Madden 2005. The presentation elements and feature sets are all there, and better than ever.

People talk about Goldeneye for N64 like it's a perfect game, and then they go back and play it and realize that graphics have come a LONG way since then, and you couldn't even look up when shooting. In Madden, yes, we've had a few steps backward. But in 2004, we also weren't close to anything like online dynasties and making trades from your laptop PC. The game has evolved in ways that are different than what a lot of us expected, but it has evolved.

I need to play the demo some more, but I feel like it has the makings of being a classic Madden title. It was as much the off-the-field stuff (barebones Dynasty, etc.) that was keeping me away from Madden 08 & 09 as anything I didn't like about the on-field action.

I was lucky enough to get demo code for ps3 and 360 and all I can say is the ps3 looks like a$$ compared to the 360. Hurt my eyes. Kinda like watching an nfl game on regular tv and then watching the same game in hi def.

Lol. I had one of those too with Timmons I think. At least the animation for it was a lot better. One handed catches used to just stick into a players hand like they were Spiderman or something, but the animation that played on 10 at least had him reach up with one hand and kind of bat it down to his other hand, and then he gathered it in. Similar to the one handed animations on 2K, but slightly not as well done. It's leaps and bounds better than what we had though.

there is something wrong with one of the catch animations. 90% of the time I do a corner rout the WR would start off looking at the ball approaching him and at the last second catch it over the top of his opposite shoulder. Rarely does the reciever take his eyes off the ball to catch it. this happens way too often, and I kno it can be fixed because it doesnt happen in NCAA 10. The reciever should go up to catch the ball on the same side he's looking at it approach him as hes running his route. Besides that the game is amazing. The annimations are out of this world. Running the ball actually feels real. The new juke stick is awsome. if your holding down sprint and mover the right analog left or right the runner does a quick juke burst and if your not holding sprint he does the jump hop juke like from the pass years, so thats more realistic...

I just dont understand how they can make such an amazing game and mess up on something so little like that.
Please someone from EA fix this catch annimation before launch, it almost ruins the game

I'm not going to really comment much on the menus or presentation too much because it is and will always be about gameplay for me. I've been a Madden gamer since 1990! Played football videogames since Tecmobowl on the NES to Madden on Genesis to NFL Gameday on PSone to NFL 2K5 on PS2, etc. You get what I'm saying.

I played my first game in All-Pro (I played with ARZ only last night ). My first drive stalled, I stopped Pit on their first drive which included a user sack with Dockett. Then on my first run play, I bust a 54 yarder with Beanie Wells, with Palomalu to beat. I'm thinking, this is getting good. Then with the perfect angle of pursuit, Palomalu stops me and gets a TD saving tackle near the Pit 24 yard line. Some people would be pissed at not scoring, but I was excited like I was a little kid in an ice cream store! This is what I wanted, it felt far more realistic in the defender stopping me than scoring. That is simulated football. A couple of plays later, I connected with Breaston at the corner for a nice over the shoulder catch and TD. Pit was down 10-3 late and Ben threw a pass to Ward with 0:01 left on the clock, and forced the game into OT. I never got on the field offensively and lost 10-13. Then I switched gears to All-Madden. I couldn't sacked Ben if my life depended on it. On one play, I called a CB blitz to which Parker picked it up an Ben never got phased by it. He was picking apart my defense whether it was man or zone. The good thing I noticed was when I pressured him, even though I didn't sack him, he threw incomplete passes. That's how it should be. I got waxed 21-3. 3rd game was closer 14-14 into the 4th but my costly mistakes in the end netted 2 picks, one was a pick 6 and I lost 28-14. The defense makes you pay if you don't make the best decisions. I got called for a facemask penalty when I tackled Parker on a run play. When I checked the replay, my jaw dropped to see that my defender did in fact pull on his facemask!!!! I was very impressed to finally see an infraction called on me and it really did happened. Another play where I went for it on 4th down, I threw it to Breaston to which he caught it but the defender hit him and he dropped the ball. I checked the instant replay and it was unbelievable to see the defender literally use his hands to poke the ball out of Breastons hands and force the incomplete pass while going down!! It's these little details I look for in a sim.

Pros:
*Live atmosphere, crowd was live, nice cut scenes of the crowd, and decent overlays. (I hope it isn't just for the superbowl), nicely done.

*Tons of nice animations, I scored a couple of TDs with Fitz and he had some very nice catching animations very similar to what he does in real life. Warner throws like Kurt Warner, and even the way Fitz goes down the field and tracks the ball as it comes, life like. The animations aren't stiff, they were fluid and natural. Can't say the same for the running as I still think the running animation in Madden 04 was best. But at least it's not as choppy as Madden 09 or NCAA 09. The break tackle animations were also nice. The tackle animations are sick. On one play, Polamalu hit Fitz on a pass in the endzone where he naturally reacted and forced Fitz to not catch the ball.

*I like the way the defense finally uses angles of pursuit to chase a ball carrier who threatens to score. This is very big for me. I hope this works for most defenses as this can hopefully stop the high scoring output in games. It can still be fun.

*Graphics are slightly improved, the players don't look like cookie cut models like in Madden 09.

*The speed of the game is ok, not the best but it helps for newcomers and returning gamers like me to get back in the groove of playing Madden.

Cons:
*Willie Parker, nothing against him, but there was one play where Dockett had him in the backfield for a loss, in great position to smack him, but Willie trucked him and gained 5 yards. That concerns me a bit because there's no way a back not named Brandon Jacobs could even attempt let alone succesfully bold over a defensive tackle. I hope the ratings and weight and strength statistics work the way it should in Madden 10!

*Some clipping issues were in this demo. The plays I noted regarding the facemask penalty and the one play where the defender knocked the ball out of Breaston's hands, there was some clipping but I hope it gets cleaned up in the retail version.

*Inconsistent cut scenes where Ben or Kurt is on the phone and the next thing you know they are on the field with their offense. This is minor but it's something I'm sure they can easily fix. Also the cut scenes show missing details of the QB faces (facial textures) after a few seconds, as if its loading well after the cutscene starts.

*CPU receivers already in catch animation well before the pass ever gets there. This can get confusing because I always tried to match my user catches with the timing of the CPU, but I thought I would never try to put my hands up that soon. Something very minor but noted.

*And referees in conference for obvious TD plays or chain gang coming in when a player clearly gets the first down.

*My biggest gripe of all, and I knew I wasn't going to ever like this is the mini game that goes on after a fumble. Seriously, I thought or hoped the days of mashing buttons would be over but this is just plain ridiculous. I forced 2 fumbles in the game, both on all Madden difficulty, one was really critical to possibly start a comeback and I wasn't even close to getting the ball for my offense. It came up so fast that I didn't even realize because Iwas too busy watching the pile up. The bar simply went in Pit favor like the cpu had a turbo controller. I would hate playing online with a cheeser in this sense. I hated the idea, and I can say I will hate this aspect of Madden 10. I wished it was a series of button presses to where u and your opponent need to correctly enter the on screen prompts correctly and accurately, to determine who gets the ball during a pile up.

Altogether, I have to say, after playing Madden 07-09 (current gen) and being disappointed in that I stopped playing each one after like 2 months and never touching them again, I am excited and will in fact get Madden 10! I am really looking forward to the franchise mode, hoping that it works well , in addition to the online leagues and regular online, in that order!

I guess I can say this, but some of you PS3 owners can add me as a friend and we can scrap it up in Madden
I feel what you feel about the demo because to me if those things are fixed then we will be playin the best madden ever put out.. Now if Ian has put in each players award history of when a player win the superbowl it will show in there stats, TRhis will add even more realism to this already great game..Waitin on the midnight release...

I agree about the lobs, especially on flares out of the backfield working better. The over the shoulder catches are very useful and most welcome, but the way that the catch animation itself looks, is terrible lol. They cathc it very awkwardly and robot like, and they way they lift their leg at like a perfect right angle bend of the kness when they raise their arms... it's just fugly I'm sorry lol.

Excuse me if this was already asked...

So I downloaded the GS Exclusive demo last night and when I go to the Game Marketplace under New Arrivals and go o Madden 10 to get the 1 min qtr demo, as it loads, it switches from a grayed out demo, to Play Demo and loads the exclusive. Do I have to go somewhere else to download or am I doing something wrong?

better on the 360 or PS3? - looks the same if you have HDMI with a 720 on PS3

Several people have commented on this already, it appears you can't have both demos on the same profile.

If you come out in a play action & cancel it you will have full control of the Q/B, no auto drop back...

# 1179 StormJH1 @ 07/24/09 01:00 PM
I ask this question again and again and nobody seems interested in it:

Is there any control input involved in Pro-Tak?

In other words, is it just an animation that takes account of the people's ratings to determine where the pile goes? Or can I actually do something, such as press forward on the L stick, to make the pile go forward?

Thanks.

Some people that mastered it during my online matches gave me major headaches when they lined up in goal line and pulled with the guard pancaking the the first defender they saw with puuurrree ease.

I think it was something cool when they first implemented it, but it was just too one-sided in the result of the play if someone user controlled the lineman. The defenders practically had no chance.
