MLB 2K8 News Post

Matt Blumenthal had an opportunity to demo Major League Baseball 2K8 this afternoon. His official writeup of the event will be up later this week, but we wanted to get some quick thoughts up here for you guys.
  • This game looks beautiful, the player models have improved but the real leap is in the animations. The animations move silky smooth and there is no need to worry about herky jerky animations of the past anymore.
  • I'm impressed with how intuitive and fresh the analog controls are. The pitching takes a little time to get the hang of but the new mechanics add a whole new dimension to the pitching model.
  • The baseball cards feature is surprisingly cool, expect me to have more on that later on this week.
  • In-game saves are officially in the game this year.
  • Check swings don't seem to be a chore anymore. They are now accomplished by pulling back on the right analog stick - no more right trigger necessary.
  • Stadium-specific animations are in. The Yankee Roll Call was mentioned specifically.
  • There should be plenty of foul balls this year. I saw several in the few at-bats I played.
  • No spring training games this year.
  • I counted eight unlockable classic stadiums. I think more might be available by default as well.
  • No co-op play
  • You will have the option to make trades for CPU-controlled teams in franchise mode, but you won't be able to edit their rotations and lineups.
  • It was suggested to me that the demo is done and has been submitted. If that's the case, it's in Microsoft's hands now.
  • I will hit on a few of the big questions from the forum here.

Note for others: don't run 1080i or 1080p.

Do you have a TV that runs in a native 1080 resolution? The issue may be your TV, and perhaps not the game.

are there more follow throughs on swings that make contact? last year there were only a couple and the transitions weren't smooth...hopefully that is changed this year

Again, thanks for the impressions.

Is there a good hit variety to different parts of the field (not just all up the middle singles), are there doubles (down the line and in the gap) and triples?

Kiz, thanks for the impressiones. Just a couple of questions... (sorry if you've already answered them)...

What difficulty level are your playing on? And how are the results so far - realistic or not?

Yeah, how are the bat sounds? Are they like the ones in the Official Trailer?

Or are they like last years?

And, are there custom soundtracks for batter walk ups, pitcher entrance, home runs, etc...???

How did you turn down the resolution? Did you have to go to the dashboard or can you do it in game?

I'm running a Samsung HDTV. I believe it's the main tv for XBox gaming, so it's definitely not an issue with the tv.

The computer won't stop spraying the field! I've been mainly up the middle, but I haven't really tried hitting down the lines.

Playing on the out of the box settings. Pro I believe?

Right now, it's 9-5 Tampa, against myself, Seattle; in the 7th.

9 runs on 19 hits for TB. 7 hits for 5 runs for myself. Kazmir for 5 Ks, and Hernandez for 4.

Realistic so far.

Some are the same, but there's some that are really, really good. Noticed one on a line drive that hit the pitcher, and replayed it to hear it again.

Yep, there's A TON, and I mean A TON of custom soundtracks available, for basically everything. Between innings, home runs, in between pitches, etc., etc., etc.

Hey Kiz,
Thanks for everything,
QUestion- With the new throwing meter, does it seem like the players "lolligag" throws like they did in 2k7 where even in important plays they barely threw the ball to the base or cahrged the ball and unloaded it quickly? Also can you adjust how fast and "on a line" the throws can be?

Yes, can we verify custom soundtracks (batter walkup/pitcher/stadium) in the final build?

If you want to throw it hard, pull the analog hard to the edge, and it'll throw hard, and fast. Didn't see anything in the sliders for adjusting.

I would love to see some impressions on the Wii version, if anyone has it!

Anyone might be able to answer this.

Can we play as the Minor League teams online?

I asked "kiz5" if custom soundtracks are in and this was his response...

Thanks HK, I appreciate the response. I'm in class so I missed it. Sorry about that. I guess I'm trying to do many things at once.

@tribeking. I've only been here a year, but the best part about OS is we try to help each other out, not make them look like an idiot. I missed it. My bad.

It's so refreshing to get a positive and unbiased review of this game! One question Kiz...did you happen to notice if homeruns looked as if they traveled different distances or do they all look like they clear the fence by a couple rows? Thanks!

But does it mean we have to use the soundtracks that are in the game already or can we use songs on our hard drive?

They're all different distances. Pena on TB hit one 447 feet, and it flew. I hit one with Beltre, and it barely cleared.
