MLB 2K8 News Post

Matt Blumenthal had an opportunity to demo Major League Baseball 2K8 this afternoon. His official writeup of the event will be up later this week, but we wanted to get some quick thoughts up here for you guys.
  • This game looks beautiful, the player models have improved but the real leap is in the animations. The animations move silky smooth and there is no need to worry about herky jerky animations of the past anymore.
  • I'm impressed with how intuitive and fresh the analog controls are. The pitching takes a little time to get the hang of but the new mechanics add a whole new dimension to the pitching model.
  • The baseball cards feature is surprisingly cool, expect me to have more on that later on this week.
  • In-game saves are officially in the game this year.
  • Check swings don't seem to be a chore anymore. They are now accomplished by pulling back on the right analog stick - no more right trigger necessary.
  • Stadium-specific animations are in. The Yankee Roll Call was mentioned specifically.
  • There should be plenty of foul balls this year. I saw several in the few at-bats I played.
  • No spring training games this year.
  • I counted eight unlockable classic stadiums. I think more might be available by default as well.
  • No co-op play
  • You will have the option to make trades for CPU-controlled teams in franchise mode, but you won't be able to edit their rotations and lineups.
  • It was suggested to me that the demo is done and has been submitted. If that's the case, it's in Microsoft's hands now.
  • I will hit on a few of the big questions from the forum here.

I've never seen a game that had that before!

Wow. That just made reading the last 30 pages of this thread a complete waste of time. lol

Awesome! This game may not make it back to Gamefly .

I hope we can play OUR CUSTOM MUSIC for all the senarios, like solo homer, 2-run homer, top of inning, single, end of inning,etc....! I bet we will only be able to turn on/off the music thats already in the game like last year in these senarios. If we can use our own music for batter intro, and pitchers like KIZ has stated that would be a move in the right direction.

And if this is a 7.8, how would you rate 2K7?

Same thing I was thinking. I mean i would give 2K7 a solid 7. So in my mind im hoping for a solid 2 point jump.

To tell the truth, I'm getting quite a bit excited to pick this up tomorrow. I have the SHow, but I'm really interested in 2K8, as the 2k series was my favorite back in the day.

Technically 720p is just as good if not better than 1080i. There's really no reason to run 1080 unless your TV can handle 1080p.

kiz5 said you can have custom music play for almost any situation.

Batter and pitcher entrance(home & away players)

Top/bot inning over

In between pitches

Solo HR, 2-Run HR, 3-Run HR,Grand Slam

Walks

etc...

It will probably be just like MLB2K5's custom soundtrack options.

the choppiness might have something to do whether your dispay does 1080p/24 or not. If it does 24 then the video would be more smooth.

Or a TV that runs at 1080i. I have never had any issues with 2K games running at 1080i.

Actually he said there was a lot of custom music you can use etc.. he didn't say we could use OUR music we have on HDD. I know I'm being a little "precise" but we still don't if we can use our own music or not, Unless I missed a post that said so. If I did then I'm sorry! I just want clarification that it did make it from beta to retail before I get all excited..

Can anyone comment on the framerate? Their has been some amount of slow down in the previous 2 360 version of the game, is this the case or have they cleaned that up?

It's been fully confirmed by Steve. He said he ripped a track off a cd and heard it while Ortiz was stepping up. Tho he did say it's sorta complicated.

Excuse me if this has been answered - I did a search of the thread and did not see it dorectly answered.

1) How is the hit variety - please tell me it's "fixed"

2) If you miss with a pitch is it auto HR?

3) Is baserunning Ai better for the CPU?

Steve has the beta not retail copy. A lot of times things in beta do not make it to retail. Unless I'm wrong and Steve has the retail....
I'm sure it's probably there..just want to make sure.

I guess your right. We haven't had a confirmation from the retail version if Ripping off your HDD is in the game

- You can add custom music for any player (in MLB), pitcher, or batter.
- You can add stadium beats for the following: Solo HR, 2-Run HR, 3-Run HR, Grand Slam, Top of Inning Over, End of Game, Between Pitch (Home), Between Pitch (Away), Batter Over, Batter Intro (H), Batter Intro (A), Single, Double, Triple, Walk, Action Replays, HR Derby, Pitcher Intro (H), Game Introand Bottom of Inning Over

I read this exactly the way it reads:

Custom Music for players, pitchers.

STADIUM BEATS for all other senarios, this means the ones that are in the game. Just like last year.

This is great....
But can you check one thing.
When going to play a game in franchise...can you set the opposing teams lineup?
OR...
Is there somewhere to set ALL the teams lineups somewhere before you go into a game in franchise?
I ask because I'm not sure what you mean in your quote....if it just means editing the players.....moving players around....setting pitch rotations and lineups or all three.

Thanks.
