MLB 2K8 News Post

Matt Blumenthal had an opportunity to demo Major League Baseball 2K8 this afternoon. His official writeup of the event will be up later this week, but we wanted to get some quick thoughts up here for you guys.
  • This game looks beautiful, the player models have improved but the real leap is in the animations. The animations move silky smooth and there is no need to worry about herky jerky animations of the past anymore.
  • I'm impressed with how intuitive and fresh the analog controls are. The pitching takes a little time to get the hang of but the new mechanics add a whole new dimension to the pitching model.
  • The baseball cards feature is surprisingly cool, expect me to have more on that later on this week.
  • In-game saves are officially in the game this year.
  • Check swings don't seem to be a chore anymore. They are now accomplished by pulling back on the right analog stick - no more right trigger necessary.
  • Stadium-specific animations are in. The Yankee Roll Call was mentioned specifically.
  • There should be plenty of foul balls this year. I saw several in the few at-bats I played.
  • No spring training games this year.
  • I counted eight unlockable classic stadiums. I think more might be available by default as well.
  • No co-op play
  • You will have the option to make trades for CPU-controlled teams in franchise mode, but you won't be able to edit their rotations and lineups.
  • It was suggested to me that the demo is done and has been submitted. If that's the case, it's in Microsoft's hands now.
  • I will hit on a few of the big questions from the forum here.

Might be the weakest infield up the middle, when you add in 75 OVR Eckstein, and 70 OVR McDonald.

I'm not arguing what you said or trying to be an ***. I'm seriously curious on how the exact number is being derived....especially for us, the gamers ???????????????????????????????
I think he was giving a ruff estimate in the FPS there is no way to tell EXACT FPS but you can tell when it drops more then half.

Yeah, it was an estimate. Coming from running COD4 on PC at 100+ FPS, to this ... isn't the best of feelings. =(

I'm going to try down on 720p, without the ball trail, and see how that goes.

Maybe try another fielding camera as well, because it really isn't that great to have it drop like that.

Yea i hope thats the case because if at 720p you still see that bad of FPS, there should be NO REASON AT ALL for that not to be fixed and its complete slacking that should of been 1st priority is making this game run as close to fps as possible.

There is no way in hell this game runs at 25 FPS. I'm sorry, but that's just wrong.

Hey Kiz5, How's does the hitting feel this year? Does it feel like your hitting the ball where it's actually going? How's the new swing stick feel? Thanks for all of your impressions!

I would really like to know how easy it is to see balls and strikes and pitch types as a hitter, compared to last years game.

- is the batting camera improved?
- easier to see the break on a pitch?

that sort of thing...

thanks in advance.

When Steve posted his impressions from the beta version he said the framerate was good.

# 233 KushGamer @ 03/03/08 07:35 PM
I dont think ive ever actually played it in 1080, just 720, so maybe there is something to that. But I really doubt it. And in 720 there is no way it runs 25. If it did, you guys would have already heard about it elsewhere. The retail didnt suddenly lose performance, the retail always has the best performance.

I've switched down to 720p, and things feel fine now.

Note for others: don't run 1080i or 1080p.

The hitting feels good so far. Starting to get the hang of pitching, and starting to already like it.

As for the batting camera / if it's easier to see breaks, etc., I'm definitely not the best person to ask. I swing at everything, lol.

Edit: I also turned off the ball trail.

Thanks for posting the impressions.

Can you answer a few more questions...

Are there any letdowns on the graphics from 2k7?

Any new animations that are really cool?

Ball off of bat physics, does the ball go where it seems it should?

Does the cpu pitcher throw mostly strikes (like it seemed in the vids)?

Do the outfielders make slow movements and then speed up to make a catch, like they are loafing and then have to speed up (steve mentioned this)?

How is the progressive lighting feature?

Finally, Is it fun and why?

Hey, if you have time, could you look up a few ratings for me? If not, it's cool.

Cincinnati Reds

Jay Bruce
Homer Bailey
Joey Votto
Johnny Cueto
Edinson Volquez

Thanks

There hasn't really been anything I've noticed where the graphics look worse than 2K7. However, I noticed a slight graphic glitch. On the replay of a 2-run double, the players that were rounding 2nd, headed to 3rd would have their helmet change white, and then it would switch back when they rounded home. This was while using the Mariners.

There's been a few animations that I didn't remember from last year, but not sure if they're new.

Bat physics seem good, but I haven't been completely paying attention to it. Unfortunately, opposite field home runs still have the player thinking they pulled it, and watching it go that way.

Does seem like it's a lot ofo cpu-thrown strikes, but I think it's so that the game is better out of the box, for those that just want to have fun. They know the enthusiasts will work with the sliders to make them how they want, but the majority of crowd will like these settings.

Progressive lighting I haven't noticed. Played in the dome, and a late-game at SafeCo so far. Might try a game at 3 pm next.

The speed-up in the outfield definitely happens, though the main time I noticed it happening was with Ichiro, so whether it was him, or the game, I'm not sure completely.

So far, I've enjoyed this game. Though graphics could be better, the additions that will make this game harder are going to be great. This game will grow on me more, I'm sure. The replay value looks to be good for this game.
