MLB 2K8 News Post

Matt Blumenthal had an opportunity to demo Major League Baseball 2K8 this afternoon. His official writeup of the event will be up later this week, but we wanted to get some quick thoughts up here for you guys.
  • This game looks beautiful, the player models have improved but the real leap is in the animations. The animations move silky smooth and there is no need to worry about herky jerky animations of the past anymore.
  • I'm impressed with how intuitive and fresh the analog controls are. The pitching takes a little time to get the hang of but the new mechanics add a whole new dimension to the pitching model.
  • The baseball cards feature is surprisingly cool, expect me to have more on that later on this week.
  • In-game saves are officially in the game this year.
  • Check swings don't seem to be a chore anymore. They are now accomplished by pulling back on the right analog stick - no more right trigger necessary.
  • Stadium-specific animations are in. The Yankee Roll Call was mentioned specifically.
  • There should be plenty of foul balls this year. I saw several in the few at-bats I played.
  • No spring training games this year.
  • I counted eight unlockable classic stadiums. I think more might be available by default as well.
  • No co-op play
  • You will have the option to make trades for CPU-controlled teams in franchise mode, but you won't be able to edit their rotations and lineups.
  • It was suggested to me that the demo is done and has been submitted. If that's the case, it's in Microsoft's hands now.
  • I will hit on a few of the big questions from the forum here.

While it's fine that we can set the lineups before the game, if you still see a bunch of teams #3 hitter batting first in franchise games....it's gonna throw the stats of considerably. I really hope they fixed that.

The stats wont be off that much....usually no matter what its the best teams in the playoffs and the players who hit 40 HR and drive in 120 RBI still do so no matter what. When the games are simmed the players produce like they are suppose to for the most part. So as long as when your playing them they are in the right order thats all that matters. Simmed stats for games u dont play will all be correct at the end of the year.

Will Matt have his impressions and write-up out today?

Thanks for the info. The other problem I see though is that even though you can control their lineups, you can't control who they call up from the "minors" in the game, unless you can fenaggle that by using the trade feature.

I agree with you guys on this, the thing to do i think is just wait for the impressions of the game as i'm sure this will be a major discussion and remember that was demo they were reviewing and not the final build, Brinkman himself said you could edit all teams lineups etc, so did KG for people that want total roster control, we''ll just have to wait and see.

I am gonna lock this thread for now, Me or another mod will open it when someone has the game to post impressions.

# 196 PVarck31 @ 03/03/08 01:00 AM
I am going to open this back up for now, since there is a chance that some people may get the game sometime tonight or tomorrow. Right now though, I would appreciate it if you did not post in here until someone has the game. If you get the game you need to show me proof then you can post your impressions. Thanks guys.

I have it now.

Total control throwing is going to take a while to get used to I think. Pitching, I'm getting rocked -- with Halladay.

For whatever reason with fielding, the players feel too small for the field, but it's not a bad thing with how it is. I haven't played 2K7 in months, so it could just be myself being used to other games.

Still going through my first game though.

I sure don't have the game, but for those that do I was wondering how defense plays this year. Last year, you could put a catcher in rightfield and you would be none the wiser since he could field the position just fine. Just wondering if that was corrected or if you could at least tell the difference in certain player's ranges. Thanks in advance!

Kiz5 does have the game, feel free to ask him questions.
