Hard to judge the cultural impact of works outside the age they were created in though.

You've had decades of music since then that was influenced or a reaction to the impact that the Beatles had. Your musical tastes have, for lack of a better word, evolved from those songs (and the works they evolved from).

Clearly, I'm not saying you have to like their songs but I am saying you can't judge their impact based solely on your current tastes.

Watermelon's awesome, especially on a hot summer's day. It's just a sweet and cold "melt in your mouth" type feeling....It's pretty much just water.

I know how influential the Beatles were to basically everybody the past 30 years. But looking back on them now, people still think they're the greatest of all-time, and that's great, that's their opinion, but I think they've been surpassed by many, many bands whom they've influenced.

Re: Uncommon Opinions

Abbey Road is one of my favorite albums, but I wouldn't include the Beatles in my list of favorite bands. I like what they did and their progression is something few bands do today, but they're no where close to my favorite band much less favorite from the 60s.

That's the rub of trying to "of all time" anybody or anything.

No matter how you look at it...nothing can occur in a stasis or a vacuum. In sports, or in the arts...the next generation gets to say they have moved past the previous and the previous says they wouldn't have last in theirs.

For point of reference...your bands who have surpassed them include?

I guess I should have worded that differently. It's not really so much of "surpassed."

It all comes down to personal preference, as I enjoy other artists a lot more than I do the Beatles, like the White Stripes, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, etc., but they're not as influential as the Beatles were, so it's hard to prove that they're the "better" bands.

As for bands from around the same time period as the Beatles, I'd say I enjoy the Who, the Stones, Zeppelin, and Queen more.

Re: Uncommon Opinions

I find that since I didn't grow up with the Beatles (obviously, since I'm only 32 lol) I get a bit poisoned by everyone from that era going "ZOMG The Beatles are the Greatest evar!!#@!@#@"

When you start listening with that all ready in your mind seems like it makes it impossible for something to actually meet that level of hype.

I can enjoy Beatles music, just don't quite "get" them like a lot of people do I guess.
