NBA 2K16: Biggest Pet Peeve?
A pet peeve in a video game is just a little thing that drives you crazy. It’s not really a “game killer” or anything like that to me, it’s just that one thing you wish was better. It can be something small like a player's signature shot being slightly off, or it can even be a bit bigger like an inability to import a draft class.

The point is this pet peeve gnaws at you even though you actively try to ignore it. It’s that big brother who pokes you in that spot between your chest and shoulder (come on, you know the spot). He just keeps doing it over and over trying to get a rise out of you. You try to pretend it doesn’t bother you, but inside your own head you’re screaming. Finally, you snap and check him through the wall. From there, you have a moment of jubilation, only to then realize you’ve sealed your own fate and the pummeling of a lifetime. So you immediately sprint out of the house and plan to hide in the small wooded area until your mom gets home from work. Only you realize your mom is going to be pissed about the brother-sized hole in the living room wall, so you do the math on how long you need to stay out before she’s just happy you’re home and totally forgets about the wall. However, somewhere along the line you realize you’re a 10-year-old kid who's totally not cool with being in the woods when it gets dark. This realization ends with a sad slink home as you accept your doomed fate.

...Oh, uh yeah sorry, got a bit off track there I guess.

The point is we all have these pet peeves in our video games. I’m going to highlight just a couple of my own in NBA 2K16, and then maybe you all will have some to share as well. Let’s do it.

The Awkward Slide

The defensive stance in this game can be funny to watch at times. Perhaps how it works has everything to do with what you set your  “defensive assist strength” to in the options menu. Maybe how the slide looks comes down to the the lateral quickness attribute of each player. Maybe I’m really bad at deciding when to use the left trigger to initiate the slide. Maybe I’m not always switching between defensive slide and turbo the right way.

There’s a lot of questions there and I don’t have all the answers. Either way, the general point is going from a defensive stance, then trying to sprint when you feel out of position, and then going back to defensive stance again leads to lots of awkward steps taken all over the court.

Looking at the above GIF, Rashad Vaughn is a rookie who has a penchant for mentally checking in and out of games at times. That being said, Vaughn still looks like he’s in the midst of trying to play defense after a long night out in Vegas. I mean even Doug McDermott can watch that GIF and be like, “yeah, even I don’t look that silly trying to play defense.”

And look, I totally accept that maybe it’s all me. I accept that maybe I’m doing something wrong here. But if I’m not doing anything wrong, then what is with that footwork? And even if I am doing something wrong, the foot planting I see on defense at times boggles my mind.

Oh, and before I move on, Dougie McBuckets you totally look that silly trying to play defense sometimes.

Know Your Personnel

Right off the bat, I readily admit I could choose a better GIF for this example. The GIF above just shows a jumbled mess of bodies -- even with me trying to pull Noel back to the corner and ignore the drive. Nevertheless, I like this GIF because it highlights the general point I want to make about both the personnel and the situation at hand.

In short, Nerlens Noel is a really good defensive player who wants to protect the basket. Be that as it may, he's leaving a three-point shooter wide open in the corner to slide over on a drive by a non-shooting big. On top of that, multiple people are already in the paint to ward off the drive.

I mean it when I say I think it’s great that you can pause the game and tweak a wide variety of defensive settings and micro-manage the crap out of the game if you so choose. There’s a lot you can do now in terms of deciding how to defend the pick and roll, how to guard shooters off the ball and all that good stuff.

At the same time, I don’t want a person’s ability to “coach” his team on defense mean we ignore some fundamental principles at a basic level. You don't just vacate the open shooter in the corner on a drive when there's already help in the paint. In this particular case, I think the match-ups just get all wonky in general due to the mass of bodies in the paint, but the overall point stands.

What I’m talking about here goes beyond just the drive and kick game as well. I won’t highlight it in GIF form, but the idea of pre-rotating also matters in future versions of the game. If one defender has to recover and worry about two players, knowing who the threat is will be important. If a non-shooting big catches a swing pass behind the 3-point line on the wing and there’s also a wide open shooter in the corner, that single defender has to know he shouldn’t close out hard on the big. Instead, he should be ready to either head to the corner or sit way back in the paint so he only protects against the drive.

What I’m describing there is some next-level stuff to a degree in terms of AI, but as these games continue to progress down the realism path, this is the sort of stuff we’ll have to start talking about in our NBA games. I'm excited about that proposition on some level, but it does mean knowing your personnel (KYP!) will matter more and more as well.

But okay, those are just two of my NBA 2K16 pet peeves. I would love to hear about some of your own peeves of the pet variety, so let me know about them in the comments below!

animation that cause turn overs. happens on the double team, you player tries a two handed over head pass only to see the ball head butted out because your player is un aware of where he is.

While not being "game breaking", my pet peeve is the ridiculous CPU loose ball reaction in tandem with the inevitable guaranteed basket right afterwards.

And the annoying coach rotations, giving Lowry (who by the way is an imbecile in the game anyway) 16 mins on average while giving Joseph 24 - they are 33/12 in the team sheet. If the point is resting starters, why do our bona fide outer-worldly superstar (namely me) playing 38 mins, a whole lot of it with role players and scrubs?

...and the painfully obvious offensive rebound scripting/nerfing (slips, paralyzing, not extending arms - and if extended, not even trying to grab).

...aaand the poorly hidden scripted rim bounce animations (often connected with previous point).

...aaaaaand even if not game-related, the utterly nonsensical "highlights" in the post-game analysis.

-Players dribbling through my body. It's almost as if the only time the ball is tangible is when iyou dribble it off someone's leg. This crap happens every game and it's annoying.

-Offensive players getting speed boosts to pick up loose balls. Completely unfair.

-Passes not being stolen. Sick of seeing my players go for a steal and completely miss or watch the CPU morph through my body to catchba pass.

MyCareer how the announcers still call my player (whose actual name is in the audio files) "Freq" and I'm still forced to do that STUPID vibin' dance

When I miss a green release 3, and then my opp hits a contested 3 on the next play.

Dude... It's the worst thing. I've had that happen to a few times.

What I hate is when someone plays zone. And leaves players wide open. And my players go cold.

It really takes me out of the game man . I have good shooters , my opponent is playing zone I feel like I should make him pay . I understand real life doesn't work like that but this is a video game . What's the point of me strategizing if the game is against me ?

That's why I keep a open mind now. About not settling for a open jumper. I move the ball around only looking for WIDE open jumpers. Everything should be dunk or layup. And then get into a groove.

(B) Player running away from the pass, resulting in a steal, turnover, or bad angle toward. Pass into the paint. Notice how Draymond Green sudden runs away from the ball.

(C) Short arming rebounds, poor rebounding logic. Harrison Barnes doesn't fully extend his arm to get the rebound. Even if he doesn't actually get the redound, the L shape shortening of the arms looks terrible. No one does that. Only happens in 2k.

Kyrie Irving 6'3"
Harrison Barnes 6'8"

(D) Players/Big Man guarding the crowd/standing out of the bounds under the basket instead of guarding the paint.
THIS> THIS> THIS, end thread, lol

these 3 things are game breaking imo. Running away from passes, bigs under the basket for no reason not guarding their man, and players running AWAY from passes.

Played 2k since the year 2000 and I have never been more frustrated, smh.

THIS.
Ive grown to loathe Spike Lee. And god forbid you want to start a different My Career at a dif position and have to trudge thru that hackneyed story again...

When the CPU passes to a perfectly defended bigman who instantly throws up a spinning underhand shot for a foul. Why don't they post up? Or at least catch it and throw up a floater or something not lunge themselves into defenders for granny shots

# 72 phade3 @ 02/12/16 09:13 AM
My biggest pet peeve is the bogus shot blocks especially on dunk attempts, the ball strips, reach ins, tipped/deflected passes. I guess I had more than one. LOL

Body Types, I thought they were supposed to be better this year?

Everyone is still too stocky, Ball players have long skinny legs - look at Karl-Anthony Towns and Kristaps Porzingis - their in-game models are way too stocky.

Need some skinny body types in there.

I just want to be able to leave a Play Now game before the game starts without completely leaving the game. When I draw OKC, GSW, CLE 7 or 8 times in a row it gets annoying leaving the game that many times. I use Portland, Utah, and occasionally ATL. I don't want to play the three best teams constantly when people use spam "plays" on offense. I feel like I'm the only one using a half court offense.

Hello,

I really really love these 2k basketball games because for better or for worse they try really hard to deliver a great and varied experience very year . BUT... i have three major pet peeves:

1. the transition D, this is two fold: First off, is the AI awareness between transitioning from offense to defense, if i send an entry pass with the pg and it is intercepted, my pg should be the first person back on defense,
Secondly the transition defense logic, i am sick of the first guy back guarding no one but a spot under the rim in all situations and that player being the last person to pick up a man when the fast break transitions to a half court game making the match-ups unfavorable. you are taught in a 2 on 1 fast break to do something similar but in a even numbers break 2v2 or 3v3 you need to man up and not sit under the rim let the second guy in a 2v2 break beat you back door and not box out ,and they are almost stuck there even if you switch to them you are frighting some unknown force just to move them and the second you switch off them the go back to the paint and ignore the open man or even the transition to half court so they don't pick up a man, this has been in 2k since nba 2k7 please please PLEASE!!! fix this and i can overlook the next two.

2. the computers ability to catch you in fast break situations and stop you from dribbling from what looks like an animation that started from an interaction with you and the defender when the defender is behind you. one I've seen it happen with PF catching up to PGs and SGs and not athletic PFs catching up to SLOW PGs

3. the AIs ability to seemingly recover alter their body constitution ie what looks like breaking bones or even moving at unreasonable speeds to either cut you off from position of advantage, block your shot when they are two person lengths away an you are already in the air for your jump shot and to catch unreasonable rebounds after contesting a shot on the other side of the backboard.

You need skinny..... I've always been a Shaq,Z-Bo, Al Jefferson body type. But my player looks like he is sick. I'm not asking for ripped muscle. I just want to look myself.

Ofcourse we should get hefty number of choices when creating our players, someone is skinny, someone is stocky maybe even hulking, some guys have skinny legs but stronger upper part of body and vice versa. I would like game to offer us variety of choices or to give us sliders for body ala sims where you can create numerous different body types from Jared Sullinger/Glen Davis type to the Tayshaun Prince/Kevin Durant types and everything in between.

funky defense, pinpoint passes by the computer, easy turnovers, skating on defense trying to stay with the computer player...great game but it has it's issues as well

- Mid-range game inexistent.

Biggest pet peeve for 2K16.

"Gameplay is fine " Are you guys f****** serious ???
All I see are massive errors in gameplay .

Solid Objects/Solid Players :
Heres an idea 2K. Make all the players solid. Make the backboard solid. Make the coach solid. Make the bench chairs solid. Make the Refs solid . Make the cheerleaders solid. Make the mascot solid and so on.
I know you have to use low poly 3d models for gaming , if you can incorporate resistance in the game through the controller , then you should be able to make everything in the game more realistic in reality. Other game developers have managed to do it successfully.

This is the only sporting game I know of where my opponent can get a clear shot at the basket through my head , chest , arm ..or be able to block my shot with a hand through the backboard , rim .

And now to add insult to injury in the latest version they ensured at the offensive end , opponents become rigid and therefore produce turnovers whilst Im dribbling and driving to the basket . Also the defensive movement is to also cover my shooting hand . As in run through it.

Offensive basket / Goaltending
Is it just me or is this just gone to a whole new level of stupid !! Ive clearly Blocked shots heading up into the basket . Grabbed clear Rebounds that have come up off the rim . Add to this my hand or fingers passing through the ball.
Whistle blows !! Come on 2K . Fix the problem ..

Dribbling :
Clear uncontested drives through the lane for a dunk or layup to be dragged 10 feet across the court or into a pack of opponents.

Yoyo Ball :
In 16 there are far more instances of balls doing the most bizarre things. Turning at right angles .Clearly heading out of bounds but doing a magic bullet and ending up in an opponents hand.
Being bounced forward but going backwards . Bouncing through defensive players on fast breaks but coming back to players dribbling hand .

Steals :
Ive also noticed a clear disadvantage created in stealing the ball. On the defensive end . Opponents pass the ball chest to head height . Eliminating the prospect of a steal .
The direct MyPlayer response is to always move low . Also pressing steal sends you in motion 1/2 way down the court .
Whereas on the offensive end , all the defensive players become rigid and put hands and arms out .

Speed/ Reaction time :
I have to say the reaction time for MyPlayer is rubbish!!. When on defense players darting up down left right . In a lot of cases opposition players with same height weight are outrunning and out manouveuring me . Also running down the court is ridiculous. Rookie players 7'2 360 lbs running faster than 6'6 210lbs SG. Defensive players mirror your every move whereas its a struggle to do the same on defense. Now we can add , defensive opponent running ahead of you.

Coaching Grade :
I think this either needs an overhaul or piss it off completely. There are numerous instances throughout a game where Im given a directive , Offensive or Defensive where Ive already done a considerable amount . "Score when you get the chance " . As an example , as a SG Ive usually gotten 10 , 15 , 20 points in the quarter to be given a Coach grade at the end of C+ or even D or F . At this stage Im being double teamed so Ill pass the ball for Assists. Again in defensive mode the same is true . "Play hard defense ". Ill always pick up a steal or a block or two , but the Coach returns C , D or F .

AI in Commentary :
You get used to hearing the same comments game in game out . I like the Half-Time show with Ernie and Shaq. But at least include correct statistical reporting of the previous season. Ive swept teams . 4 - 0 , 3 - 0 , 2 -0 . To be told last season we lost the series 1 - 3 . Include some highlights like 13 did.

Footnote :
I think for a really enjoyable gaming experience its about getting the simple things right and 100% before you incorporate major changes. In this instance I have to give 2K16 a 4/10 . Because there are some serious gameplay issues from previous releases that havent been addressed . Animations are slightly better as are the graphics. But MyCareer outside the 4 games in College was crap !

NBA 2K17
I would hope the developers really sit down , work on and fix these long standing issues. Improve the 1 on 1 play offensive and defensive and get rid of the transparent player problems. Also human movement and reaction . Because its way off .
As for the MyCareer. 16 was a load of racist crap!!! . Freq Vibrations Im mean seriously!!
Basketball is now a fully International Sport as is the NBA. You only have to look at the 14 and 15 Draft Class to realise its dominated by Europeans , Australians , Asians etc .
So MyCareer should reflect this . Not everything associated with the NBA comes out of the US or is African American for that matter.
MyCareer should have an International direction. I like the College entrance scheme . MyPlayer should be created , enter college but develop the skills during this time . Play a full College season before the draft.
Include more Season relevant cut scenes . Rivert back to 2K15 for Agent interaction. And 2K14 for Coach interaction. You should be able to influence the makeup of your team . Include more oncourt cut scenes . Talking to opponents during the game even . A fight ! A scuffle . Include Olympic years as well as FIBA Championships.

But most importantly , be able to play out your Rookie Season . The last 3 Editions weve had - 8 games in the Season , be free agent drafted with 28 games left or wait on the bench until you get game time .

Last but not least more interaction during a game. Half time or huddle . Use the pie chart scenarios to chose directions for the game . " youre 4 points down , 46 sec on the clock " ... etc etc .
