NBA 2K16: Biggest Pet Peeve?
A pet peeve in a video game is just a little thing that drives you crazy. It’s not really a “game killer” or anything like that to me, it’s just that one thing you wish was better. It can be something small like a player's signature shot being slightly off, or it can even be a bit bigger like an inability to import a draft class.

The point is this pet peeve gnaws at you even though you actively try to ignore it. It’s that big brother who pokes you in that spot between your chest and shoulder (come on, you know the spot). He just keeps doing it over and over trying to get a rise out of you. You try to pretend it doesn’t bother you, but inside your own head you’re screaming. Finally, you snap and check him through the wall. From there, you have a moment of jubilation, only to then realize you’ve sealed your own fate and the pummeling of a lifetime. So you immediately sprint out of the house and plan to hide in the small wooded area until your mom gets home from work. Only you realize your mom is going to be pissed about the brother-sized hole in the living room wall, so you do the math on how long you need to stay out before she’s just happy you’re home and totally forgets about the wall. However, somewhere along the line you realize you’re a 10-year-old kid who's totally not cool with being in the woods when it gets dark. This realization ends with a sad slink home as you accept your doomed fate.

...Oh, uh yeah sorry, got a bit off track there I guess.

The point is we all have these pet peeves in our video games. I’m going to highlight just a couple of my own in NBA 2K16, and then maybe you all will have some to share as well. Let’s do it.

The Awkward Slide

The defensive stance in this game can be funny to watch at times. Perhaps how it works has everything to do with what you set your  “defensive assist strength” to in the options menu. Maybe how the slide looks comes down to the the lateral quickness attribute of each player. Maybe I’m really bad at deciding when to use the left trigger to initiate the slide. Maybe I’m not always switching between defensive slide and turbo the right way.

There’s a lot of questions there and I don’t have all the answers. Either way, the general point is going from a defensive stance, then trying to sprint when you feel out of position, and then going back to defensive stance again leads to lots of awkward steps taken all over the court.

Looking at the above GIF, Rashad Vaughn is a rookie who has a penchant for mentally checking in and out of games at times. That being said, Vaughn still looks like he’s in the midst of trying to play defense after a long night out in Vegas. I mean even Doug McDermott can watch that GIF and be like, “yeah, even I don’t look that silly trying to play defense.”

And look, I totally accept that maybe it’s all me. I accept that maybe I’m doing something wrong here. But if I’m not doing anything wrong, then what is with that footwork? And even if I am doing something wrong, the foot planting I see on defense at times boggles my mind.

Oh, and before I move on, Dougie McBuckets you totally look that silly trying to play defense sometimes.

Know Your Personnel

Right off the bat, I readily admit I could choose a better GIF for this example. The GIF above just shows a jumbled mess of bodies -- even with me trying to pull Noel back to the corner and ignore the drive. Nevertheless, I like this GIF because it highlights the general point I want to make about both the personnel and the situation at hand.

In short, Nerlens Noel is a really good defensive player who wants to protect the basket. Be that as it may, he's leaving a three-point shooter wide open in the corner to slide over on a drive by a non-shooting big. On top of that, multiple people are already in the paint to ward off the drive.

I mean it when I say I think it’s great that you can pause the game and tweak a wide variety of defensive settings and micro-manage the crap out of the game if you so choose. There’s a lot you can do now in terms of deciding how to defend the pick and roll, how to guard shooters off the ball and all that good stuff.

At the same time, I don’t want a person’s ability to “coach” his team on defense mean we ignore some fundamental principles at a basic level. You don't just vacate the open shooter in the corner on a drive when there's already help in the paint. In this particular case, I think the match-ups just get all wonky in general due to the mass of bodies in the paint, but the overall point stands.

What I’m talking about here goes beyond just the drive and kick game as well. I won’t highlight it in GIF form, but the idea of pre-rotating also matters in future versions of the game. If one defender has to recover and worry about two players, knowing who the threat is will be important. If a non-shooting big catches a swing pass behind the 3-point line on the wing and there’s also a wide open shooter in the corner, that single defender has to know he shouldn’t close out hard on the big. Instead, he should be ready to either head to the corner or sit way back in the paint so he only protects against the drive.

What I’m describing there is some next-level stuff to a degree in terms of AI, but as these games continue to progress down the realism path, this is the sort of stuff we’ll have to start talking about in our NBA games. I'm excited about that proposition on some level, but it does mean knowing your personnel (KYP!) will matter more and more as well.

But okay, those are just two of my NBA 2K16 pet peeves. I would love to hear about some of your own peeves of the pet variety, so let me know about them in the comments below!

A few of my pet peeves straight off the head that are little things that irks me:

1. Not having a better FA experience in MyCareer. But the little thing that irks me about FA is that you cannot see the teams roster until you sign w/ them.

2. When playing online games, you cannot view the highlights or game track like you could in previous games.

3. When CAP's, you can't assign tattoos to them.

4. When trying to join a friends park, you have to go through one whole loading screen to get to a random park. Then join your friends and have to wait again. Last year, you could hop right into your friends park. Things like this is what I don't understand.

5. Before in MyCareer, when looking at the social media, you could actually click the topic and it would take you right to that section. For example, it'll say Raptors beat Heat 87-77. Last year you could click on that and it'll take you straight to the box score.

6. Having to start your association, Mycareer or etc over to get new jerseys that are released.

I've got 3 huge pet peeves about this game. They don't really stop me from playing, but really get to me and eventually cause me to turn of and walk away.

1. Grabbing a rebound and have to wait til the CPU is fully back on D or around half court to push the ball. BUT CPU can toss 3/4 passes to wipe open players not being guarded under the hoop.

2. When in isolation making a hesitation move...defender is BEATEN only to have some type of invisable wall or (you cant go yet) animation play out and allows defender to get back into postion.

3. Player speed!! I truly belive this will never be fixed and every year I pray it is, but I'm let down. dont belive me try making a steal at half court with Chris Paul against any center in the leauge. I can bet you they'll ride your hip all the way to the hoop which will result in a missed layup.

- Not being able to skip Timeouts/Halftime/Post Game right away wasting time.

- Not being able to create a team (have to do it in a mode instead of creating them and using logo/jerseys wherever).

- My teammates being idiots. Almost every possession someone is unguarded. And not being able to grab a rebound/loose ball, CPU gets a ton they shouldn't.

* Gameplay overall including defense, transition defense, post defense, pick & roll defense, alley oops, morphing, sliding, rebounding, post offense

* Player bodies look hulking and too big

* Colours are wrong especially when it comes to floors and jerseys

* Non-existent anklebreakers

* Generic arena sounds, PA also

* Roster constitution is what i don't like, too many 90's players, also too many in high 80's

* Scanned vs Non-scanned shoes ratio

* Lack of in-game physics (players, ball, rim) unrealistic collision, fouls, contacts in general

It shouldn't be difficult for the game to check the stats of the player entering the game and see if it's possible, and yet 2K can't be bothered. Huge pet peeve.

My biggest pet peeve has to be in Pro-Am (basically the only mode I play outside of grinding in MyCareer)

1) I'm 6'9 and a PF but am forced to play Center against dudes that are 7'3. I wanna play like Kevin Love, not Hassan Whiteside. Ridiculous that it plays you outside of your position type. Really ruins a lot for me.

2) The white vs white jerseys. We changed our team colors to Yellow and Red for this reason. Ridiculous.

3) The ability to "choose" your AI teammates. I think 2k should do some mix of MyTeam and ProAm, where you can unlock Bronze/Silver/Gold/Platinum teammate cards. That way, if you only have 3/4 people playing instead of 5, you can plug in others. At the VERY least, there should be some consistency. Maybe allow you to create a player to use in those positions and level them up based solely on their game time. Idk. Something to make those random Computer players more lively.

4) Ability to assign users to a team. I created the ProAm team me and our friends play with. I'm not able to play but others want to, it bothers me that they can't just pick up and play. 2k needs to look to FIFA Pro Clubs on how to handle this.

*The fact that almost everything is customizable yet 2k still can't give us the ability to edit sock colour or short length......REALLY?

*Zero authentic arena sounds/music for classic teams. It's been missing since 2k12 - retro team arenas feel empty and pointless.

Yeah, I know that's 3 peeves, but what ever.
Agree with this. MLB The Show is teasing a return of Sounds of the Show, hopefully it's like it was last gen and if so, that 2K follows suit. Those arena sounds add soooo much to the game. I went back and played 2k13 on the PS3 and smiled every time I heard D Rose's chime every time I hit a shot. We need that back!

I especially hate the PF that doesn't guard the stretch 4 at the 3point line.

or just allow you to choose jersey AFTER you match with a team

both of these also irk me .... especially #2. ugh ruins branching out of sizeups/crossovers

1) No 4v4 courts in the flyers or rivet city parks and no 5v5 in any park

2) When you play pro am with less than 5 players they never give you a big man as your CPU teammate. You could be playing with 4 point guards and the best they'll give you is a small forward.

Pet peeve?

PLAYER FATIGUE!!!!!!!!! How many of you have started a game, offense gets the ball from opening tip and the defense blocks a shot and it goes out of bounds under the basket. With auto subs on or off, your defense will lose energy without the ball in play and the clock is not running. You should not have to sub your players in less than 10 seconds into the game. This doesn't happen only at the beginning of the game. Whenever the offense takes the ball out under the basket, it will drain your defensive players energy. This is not right. This is not basketball.

Another pet peeve??? When throwing the ball in after a made basketball, why do the players have a certain spot to throw the ball in? Why does it take so long to throw it in? In REAL BASKETBALL, you can run the baseline.

Pet peeve as in minor issues?

When I grab a rebound and while I'm trying to push the ball up court, I get sucked into an overagressive bumping animation by the defense.

That animation where someone jumps on you and you stumble for a few seconds. It should be a foul but you get stuck into an unbreakable animation.

# 54 Skyflame21 @ 02/10/16 07:11 PM
Mine is the inability for players to maintain their dribbles when they get bumped. Absolutely drives me nuts. I'm ok with a bad dribbler losing control but to have your PG with a high rating he shouldn't just lose the ball as often as the do.

# 55 nova91 @ 02/10/16 07:53 PM
The CPUs trash defense being rewarded with miss after miss by my guys and my guys good defense being crapped on by make after make with smothering defense on the CPU.

# 56 Tekkonkinkreet @ 02/10/16 08:57 PM
When the CPU posts up and in a blink has floated through the defender to the basket.

# 57 2_headedmonster @ 02/10/16 09:11 PM
- how on a fastbreak MY WHOLE EFFING TEAM runs to the rim

- brick wall perimeter defensive wins

- how i have no control over how my big jumps for blocks (we've all had a great shotblocker do a passive lunge when he should have went up after the ball)

- how i cant do a quick counter move off the dribble

- how all fouls are aggressive fouls

- screens that create no contact as if by defensive voodoo

Yeah that's just it. I have only played the game offline. The only time I had the game online was when I first bought the console and was installing the day 1 patch to my xbone at my girls place and decided to install the game afterwards... i never started a game away from home though. When I got home and decided to play the game offline where there is no connection, all of those problems I listed existed. My console is never online when I'm home playing ******ly. That's when I realized the game doesn't allow to save any progress or settings of you're offline. If you go to 2ks forums on their site there are others experiencing this.
