Ten Game Recap

Tremendous start to say the least, there really isn't anything that I can say about this team that needs to be improved. We have a terrific balance of offensive power and defensive lock down ability, making teams play 200ft worth of hockey. Been impressed with Kuiper, the rookie, hardest shot I've seen in the game. Doesn't always hit the net, but my god that thing is a laser. All four lines are contributing, and rolling just the way we want them to. We had the luxury of quite a few games at home to start, we will see how this success translates to the road... Here are the top scorers so far (I will still do big standings and stat updates, but I like doing the 10 game intervals).... COMING UP -- Scouting trip down to Rockford!

Top Scorers
C - Jonathan Toews (9 - 6 - 15 pts)
LW - Jeremy Morin (4 - 8 - 12 pts)
RW - Patrick Kane (3 - 8 - 11 pts)

Rookie Skaters
D - Brad Kuiper (1 - 3 - 4 pts)
LW - Sandy McAllister (0 - 3 - 3 pts)
LW - Chris Reynolds (1 - 2 - 3 pts)
C - Gelen Smith (1 - 2 - 3 pts)

Goaltending
G - Jacob Markstrom (7-2 / 2.22 gaa / .911 sv%)
G - Matej Machovsky (1-0 / 1.00 gaa / .955 sv%)

Hawks announce lines heading into the regular season opener against Columbus at the United Center...

In my opinion this is the best lock down team we have put together. The defensive core has been together for the past three years at least, and now we are adding a young gun (Kuiper) to the mix. Offensively I feel like we have a brilliant combo of scoring talent, and defensive minded forwards. It should be difficult to put the puck in the net against us, and that is the goal, make the opponent work for everything they get. Very interested to see how this plays out, I think it is one of, if not the best team we have had here since this dynasty started. Thanks for following!

Entry Level Deals

Free Agency Acquisitions

Hawks announce two deals before pre season starts..

Acquire
2020 1st Round Pick
RW - Andy Grossman

Acquire
2019 1st Round Pick

-- Odds are the Oilers are going to be pretty good, but this gives us another 2019 1st round pick to play with. Maybe, with some luck the Oilers come back down to Earth and this pick turns out to be the better of the two. Grossman was a decent prospect, didn't see him ever cracking the NHL lineup.

Acquire
D - Frank Schumacher
C - Brandon Pirri

Acquire
LW - Sandy McAllister (25 years old, SNP, B-,B-,A-)

-- Have a lot of defensemen in the system that are now passing Schumacher, and likewise with centers, Pirri no longer holds a spot on the active roster. In losing Beach earlier in the off season it was necessary to get a LW that could play the 3rd line role, and I think we did that. McAllister should continue to get better as well, I like this move.

BOOM! Kuiper is an 84 overall, by far the best draft pick I've had in this dynasty. From the looks of it, he will step right onto the Hawks roster when we break camp. It wasn't a terribly deep draft, but when you can get that at the top it's hard to say you're disappointed.

LIVE @ The NHL Entry Level Draft

Bettman - "Good evening everyone, and welcome to the 2018 (yes I'm still alive) NHL Entry Level Draft. Tonight marks the beginning of many great NHL careers, unless the Islanders have the first pick. I would like to welcome all our broadcast partners, as well as the millions(?) of fans watching at home. I would also like to congratulate the Edmon... whispering to off stage.. is this right?, sorry, the Edmonton Oilers, they showed the NHL World the miracles can come true, even North of the Border. Without further ado let's begin the 2018 NHL Entry Level Draft, the Philadelphia Flyers are on the clock."

@BhawksTV
-- Rumors swirling that the Hawks are about to announce a deal, but Philly is walking up to make their pick, nothing yet.

Select
# 1 overall - Goalie - Marty McAmmond

@BhawksTV -- A deal has been confirmed by at least one Hawks source, nothing to announce yet as the Sharks are headed up to make their pick.

Select
# 2 overall - Goalie - Charlie Perrin

@BhawksTV
-- Nothing confirmed from NHL offices, could Hawks stay still with two top goalies gone?

Select
# 3 overall - Goalie - Brett Flick

Gary Bettman
-"We have a trade to announce...

Acquire
2018 - 1st Round Pick (4th Overall)

Acquire
LW - Kyle Beach
2019 - 2nd Round Pick

@BhawksTV -- BEACH ON HIS WAY TO CALGARY W/PICK. HAWKS GET 4TH OVERALL FROM CALGARY. More to come..

Bettman - "The Chicago Blackhawks are on the clock.."

Hawks GM Stan Bowman, "The Chicago Blackhawks would like to congratulate the Edmonton Oilers on their Stanley Cup victory. The Chicago Blackhawks are proud to select, from the Portland Witerhawks of the WHL, Brad Kuiper"

@BhawksTV-- Defenseman Brad Kuiper of the Portland Winterhawks joins the Chicago Blackhawks.

BOWMAN PRESSER AFTER PICK

"We felt that even though the three goalies were taken that we had an opportunity to grab Brad at the # 4 spot, and essentially get a #1 pick type of player at the #4 spot."

On Kuiper
- "He's huge, he's a very big kid (6'6") and he can skate like the wind. You don't find a lot of guys out there like that, and we felt it would be more than worth our time to go after him"

On Beach
- "Kyle has done a great job here, played wherever we asked him to play. Probably could have been a top 6 player if he weren't blocked by Neids (Neiderreiter) and Morin, he has the chance to go to Calgary and play top 6 minutes, very happy for him."

Wanted to take the opportunity to break down the top prospects entering the draft this year. The Hawks are said to be hot after the top three goalies, especially the #1 rated player overall (Marty McAmmond - G), a deal would have to be struck to even think about drafting him, so stay tuned.

The off season, a time usually reserved for parades and celebrations around this city, but not this year. For the second straight year the Hawks head into the remaining summer without Lord Stanley, and it hurts. “Of course it hurts, you want to win every game, win every series, every Cup, but it doesn’t always work out that way. We’ve been fortunate the past few years to win the Stanley Cup, but that doesn’t make it feel any better about not winning it,” GM Stan Bowman said. Bowman continued, “While we are all disappointed in the outcome, we are thrilled with what we learned from this season, and with what we have learned about our team. I feel like we are now in a position, personnel wise, and financially to head into next season as a serious contender.” The fact that Bowman hit on the financial aspect of the off season is important to pay attention to. Not only is the heart and soul of this team, Captain Jonathan Toews up, but nine other guys that played regular minutes last year are up as well. “We will do everything in our power to bring back every guy that we think should be here, Johnny (Toews), isn’t going anywhere, we will make sure he finishes his career as a Hawk, that’s what we both want,” Bowman said. When asked about the obstacles that might be in the way he was direct, “As I said we learned a lot about our team and the individuals on it last year, if players need to be shipped out of town, or sent back to Rockford to do so, then we will do it, we aren’t scared.”

Expectations Heading in the Draft

For the past few years it has been widely known that the Hawks want to secure a top goaltending prospect. Well, this year might finally give them their chance, as number one, two, and three in the final ISS rankings are goalies. Obviously the Hawks are not picking in the top 3 or top 5 for that matter so a move will have to be made in order to achieve that goal, and Bowman is ready. “It’s no secret that we want to move high up the board in the first round, I think there are some options, but that doesn’t mean a top pick will just be handed to us, something worth wile will be headed the other way.” In talking with various scouts we have learned that at least one team is not valuing their top 5 pick, and would prefer to get an established player in return, here are the options.

  • # 1 Pick – Philadelphia Flyers
  • # 2 Pick – San Jose Sharks
  • # 3 Pick – Vancouver Canucks
  • # 4 Pick – Calgary Flames
  • # 5 Pick – Florida Panthers
Well, if I would have named the three most likely teams to not trade with the Hawks, I would have said those top three. Not to mention the fact that all three teams are in need of a young goaltender for their system and future. I don’t think Bowman will just accept that, and I think he will pursue one of those picks, the more likely scenario however is dealing with Calgary or Florida, as both teams have been good trading partners in the past. Is it worth it for the Hawks to deal an established player for a pick outside the top three when it is very possible that the top three teams take all three goalies at the top? That remains to be seen, but Bowman has made it clear that goaltending is not the only thing to be gained in the draft. “The top three goalies are good, but the players in the top five are intriguing, we might take our chances on something other than a goalie, you just don’t know until it starts to play out.”

Off Season Goals
  • Acquire top 5 draft pick
  • Improve depth scoring (3rd and 4th lines)
  • Add a piece to the defense (5-6 type of guy)

Flat out domination by the Oilers, like I said before I thought they were the best team in the West, if not the whole NHL earlier in the year, they are proving it. SORRY NO GRAPHICS FOR THIS ONE BECAUSE I'M ABOUT TO MURDER MY COMPUTER, I need to get this move done....

HUGE season/off season previews coming, trying to get back to more writing again.

(7) Washington

3-2 WSH
4-1 WSH
3-2 WSH
3-0 TOR
2-0 TOR
1-0 TOR OT
3-2 WSH

Holy crap, Reimer almost did it. Literally, it was all Reimer, I think he scored the only goal in the OT game as well. The man had 8 SO's in the postseason and will not be playing for the Stanley Cup.

Offense Disappears, Ducks Headed to Conference Finals

I can honestly say that I'm not disappointed (well obviously, at the outcome I am) in the least. I knew going into the playoffs that this team had a propensity to stop scoring, for whatever reason. It happened again, but I thought the chances were there, and I think the effort is there. For awhile now I've talked about the team not being "elite" yet, and I thought it was close, well I think it is next year. This has literally been a 5 year process, and I think we will see the result next year. Trying to remain positive moving forward as we head into the 5th and final year of our contract.

Oilers Steamroll into the Conference Finals

If it weren't for a slump in the final two weeks of the season the Oilers would have had the #1 seed. They are the best team in the West, lets see if they can knock off the red hot #8 seeded Ducks.

The man is lights out right now, five shutouts in two rounds, amazing.

Caps Find Ways to Win, Head to Conference Finals

This team has just found ways to win, three OT wins in this series alone. Teams like this are dangerous in the playoffs.

WESTERN CONFERENCE SEMI FINALS

Oh man, on the surface it looks like everything is falling into place. However, I will caution this, the Ducks always give us trouble. We are in for a dog fight, and clearly they are playing their best hockey right now.

EASTERN CONFERENCE SEMI FINALS

Talk about a weird draw, lowest seed left is a three seed, anything can happen.

Rangers really no match for the Habs, which was rather surprising.
