Rumors have been swirling all day that the Hawks, coming off of three straight trips to the Stanley Cup finals are going to be major players today. From what we are hearing they want to get back into the top of the draft, and are willing to part with some key pieces to their recent success. Stay tuned...

BREAKING NEWS UPDATE

Blackhawks TV is reporting the Goalie Corey Crawford, backstop for the Hawks for two Stanley Cups, and four trips to the Finals in the last five years has been traded. Details to follow......

It's official, Corey Crawford has been traded....

Acquire
G - Corey Crawford
2017 - 1st Round Pick

Acquire
2017 - 1st Round Pick (6th Overall)
2017 - 2nd Round Pick
2019 - 3rd Round Pick

The Minnesota Wild fill a huge need by adding Crawford, as they were relying on burnt out prospects and stop gap options for the last couple of years. The Hawks side of things is puzzling, unless they draft a goalie (two goalies in the Top 5), because there are no solid # 1 UFA's on the market this off season. The Hawks could also look into the trade market to see if there is a solid #1 out there worth their time, but many teams aren't thrilled with giving up a true #1. Definitely an interesting story to follow this off season.....

Let the Draft Begin...

The Chicago Blackhawks are on the clock with the 6th overall pick acquired from Minnesota...

Stan Bowman.... "The Chicago Blackhawks are proud to select from the United States U-20 league, Nicholas Niedermayer..."

Miss-spelled on purpose so it would fit, haha, trust me!

Not going to lie, this draft was tough, meaning there really wasn't too much depth at all. I will do a pretty nice prospect write up, I know SEB will appreciate that .... Lot's of work to do this off season, here is my take on the Crawford deal...

Had to be done in my eyes, he was great for us, maybe a little inconsistent but what goalie isn't? Crawford was up at the end of next season, meaning he would have to be dealt during the year, and I really didn't want to do that to A, our team, or B, to Crawford. Having a goalie playing all season while being on the block is not a good thing. Toews is up at the end of next season and we would like him to get a long term deal keeping him here for the rest of his career, and I didn't want to have to choose between the two of them. Now the issue, is Timo Niemi ready for the #1 job at an 84 overall?? I can't say yes to that at this point, we have a lot of work to do to make this team what we think it can be, thanks for following.

We are about two and a half weeks from the trade deadline, what to do. Can we catch the Predators? I think so. Do we need outside help to do so? Probably. Therein lies the issues facing the Hawks, both immediate, and longer term. The obvious fix, or improvement here would be obtaining a second line center via trade. Odds are some prospects in the lineup would have to be moved in order to do so. We have a strong group of guys in the pipeline at the center position (see prospects report shortly). Do we sacrifice some prospects to compete with a depleted Western Conference to catch a, I mean the Predators? The way I see it is this, we have won the last two Cups, we sit in 4th place in the West with the 2nd best point total in the NHL. We have guys coming thru the pipeline, so I'm leaning more towards standing pat with the guys right now, and see if they can get it done in the playoffs. Last year I thought we were a year or two away from being elite, and I think that prediction is right on, because I think if this group comes back mostly in tact next year then things could get scary good. Stay tuned for the prospects report, and any possible moves at the deadline. Thanks for following!

STANDINGS AND STATS THRU FEBRUARY 20, 2017

PLAYOFF PICTURE

STAT BLAST

Okay, I know this should have been expected given how good the East looked, but holy crap are there some bad teams in the West. Usually it's never good to go 0-10-0 in your last ten games, and two teams are currently riding that streak, I think we found a few sellers. What a twenty game stretch for Carlson, 18 points, +14. The offense from the back end is picking up which is a very good sign, and it's never bad when your top pairing leads the conference in +/-. Thanks for following!

Hope you guys enjoy the new and improved updates. What a race in the Eastern Conference, literally, all 15 teams still have a shot at the playoffs and we are about two and a half weeks from the trade deadline, will any teams make a move? At this point it looks like there are no sellers, but things could change before then, who do you guys think will make the playoffs. Thanks for following!

*** BREAKING NEWS ALERT ***
Brought you by Blackhawks TV

CHICAGO -- Gm Stan Bowman has announced that organ-I-zation has decided to extend Mike Haviland two additional years. Haviland 3 year contract was due to expire at the end of the year.

Statement from Bowman: "Two and a half years ago this organ-I-zation was on the brink, brink of being dismantled, brink of greatness, we didn't know. That's when Mr. McDonough and Rocky Wirtz decided to choose the path of greatness. They trusted me with my vision of the future by giving me a five year deal, in turn I trusted Mike Haviland to lead this team to greatness. With his tremendous success over his first two plus years it is my pleasure to announce that we have extended his contract two more years beginning at the end of this season."

This doesn't really come as a surprise to many of the sources close to the team, but it is nice to see the team get this taken care of before the off season came, and there would be no other target for teams with openings than Haviland. Already thought of as being a solid coaching prospect his status has only been elevated by leading the Hawks to two straight Cups. It's nice to see the Hawks take care of their own.

Haviland Snapshot:

  • Signed a three year deal to coach the Hawks at the end of the 2013 season.
  • In his two plus seasons he has amassed a record of (127-68-17)
  • Won two Stanley Cups in his first two NHL coaching seasons.
  • New two year extension will keep him the coach of the Hawks thru the 2018-2019 season.

Maybe a little sluggish in the 1st period, but the last forty minutes might have been the best forty minutes of the year, spurred on by two excellent penalty kills. Hawks pull to within four points of Nashville in the Central Division.
