ALL-STAR BREAK UPDATE
The Los Angeles Lakers got out to a solid start this season, jumping out to a record of 22-15, good for 4th place in the Western Conference. However, a stretch in late January continuing into the All-Star break brought them back to .500 with a record of 27-27. Coming into the All-Star break, the Lakers have lost 7 of their last 9 games, dropping them back to 7th in the conference. In the middle of that slide, center Hassan Whiteside became disgruntled with management that D'Angelo Russell was the star of the team and wanted to be traded. The coaches and general manager were able to talk Whiteside out of it, however, and there haven't been any problems since.

BREAKING NEWS: The Lakers have traded SF Thabo Sefolosha and their 2017 first-round pick to the Chicago Bulls for SF P.J. Tucker and the Sacramento Kings' 2017 first-round pick
LOS ANGELES - In game one of the 2016-17 NBA season, the Los Angeles Lakers showed some of the potential that has people in LA excited about this team. In a game that flashed their two-way potential as an all-around basketball team, the Lakers beat the Houston Rockets 104-78. The defense struggled in the first quarter, giving up 27 points, but they responded by giving up just 51 points in the remaining 3 quarters. They also managed to show great hustle on the defensive end, totaling 8 steals and a remarkable 13 blocks in the game. The Lakers also started hot, scoring 28 points in the first quarter, but they continued it throughout the game en route to a 104 point performance.
D'Angelo Russell was the star of the show in this one. He came out of the gates looking to get his teammates involved, and eventually got himself going as well. Russell led the Lakers in both points (28) and assists (16), and he was tied for the team lead in rebounds (6). The other star tonight was Hassan Whiteside. Whiteside struggled on the boards for his standards, but he finished the night with 27 points, 6 rebounds, and his biggest stat of the night, 6 blocks. The newest Laker looks as though he's going to be a big help to a defense that struggled mightily last season.

At the halfway point in the season the San Diego Padres are sitting at 51-30, good for 5 games ahead of the Los Angeles Dodgers for first place in the NL West and tied with the Miami Marlins for the best record in the National League. Overall the Padres have stayed remarkably healthy. No starting pitcher has missed a start yet this year and starting position players have only missed games when given the day off.

SAN DIEGO - In both the home opener and season opener, the San Diego Padres got the better of the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-0. In what was a pitcher's duel throughout, the Padres struck first in the 4th inning. Kris Bryant tripled into the right field corner, and one batter later Albert Pujols grounded out to shortstop to drive in Bryant. Two more solo home runs from Joc Pederson and Andrew McCutchen stretched the San Diego lead to 3 and they never looked back.
Jacob deGrom had an excellent first start of the season, giving up no runs in 7 full innings while striking out 12 and walking none. A high pitch count prevented him from going the distance, but both deGrom and the Padres will gladly take this start from him.

The Minnesota Twins got a huge boost at a position of need as they traded C Kurt Suzuki, CF Danny Santana, and LF Oswaldo Arcia to the St. Louis Cardinals for All-Star C Yadier Molina.

MINNEAPOLIS - The Minnesota Twins got a win over the division rival Chicago White Sox in their home opener, 5-2. Minnesota jumped out to a quick lead in the first inning after Brian Dozier was hit by a pitch with 2 outs and nobody on base. That extended the inning and brought up Miguel Sano, who promptly sent a high fastball over the left field wall for a two-run home run. The Twins took a 2-0 lead in the first and never looked back, eventually adding two more runs in the fourth inning and then another run in the sixth.
Phil Hughes was spectacular in this one, pitching 8 full innings and giving up just 2 runs while striking out 11 White Sox. This was a big bounce-back game for Hughes, who struggled in his first start of the year.

PHILADELPHIA - In a battle of rebuilding teams, the Los Angeles Lakers got the better of the Philadelphia 76ers 91-76. This was also a battle of the #2 and #3 picks in the 2015 NBA Draft in D'Angelo Russell and Jahlil Okafor. Russell had the best game of his young career, as he finished with 30 points and 9 assists on an impressive 11-14 from the field. Okafor had a decent game himself, finishing with 17 points and 5 rebounds.
The Lakers started this game extremely slow, scoring only 17 points in the first quarter and 41 in the first half. Behind D'Angelo Russell, however, they dominated the Sixers in the third quarter and continued it into the fourth to end up with a 15 point win, despite Kobe Bryant scoring just 5 points on 2-10 shooting. This game shows how the Lakers are moving away from a team dependent on Kobe Bryant to a team led by its young guys.

BROOKLYN - Game one of the 2015-16 showed a few things for the Brooklyn Nets. While this team has a lot of work to do and has a long way until they are at the level everyone wants, they're still a team that will win a fair amount of games. There's no point in tanking this season, as the Celtics hold Brooklyn's first round pick, so they will be looking to sneak into the playoffs behind their center and star, Brook Lopez.
