DETROIT - The Pistons squeezed out a win in a thriller against the Phoenix Suns 116-113. The Suns jumped out to a fast start, leading by 10 after the first quarter. That continued into the second quarter, but momentum shifted when, halfway through the quarter, Amar'e Stoudemire was ejected for receiving his second flagrant 2 foul of the game. The large rebounding edge that the Suns had up to that point eventually disappeared, and so did the lead.
The fourth quarter was neck and neck throughout, with the Suns consistently holding a 4-6 point lead, until Andre Drummond and Isaiah Thomas took over. Drummond finished with a game high 28 points and 14 rebounds, on an astounding 13-13 shooting from the field. His only blemish was missing 2 free throws in the first half. Drummond kept the Pistons in it throughout the fourth, as he gobbled up 5 offensive rebounds in the quarter, turning 4 of them into second chance opportunities. Drummond had 14 of his 28 points in the fourth quarter.
After Andre Drummond tied the game with just over a minute left, the teams went scoreless for close to a minute, until Drummond was fouled with 23.5 seconds left. Drummond made both free throws, then Grant Hill stole the ball from Steve Nash and was fouled with 16 seconds left. He only made 1-2 free throws, leaving the door open for the Suns to tie the game, but it never materialized, and the Pistons escaped with a 3 point win.
Injury Note: Ben Wallace missed his 4th consecutive game and will be out another 1-2 months with a broken kneecap
Next Game: Pistons (13-6) vs. Milwaukee Bucks (14-4)

ATLANTA - It was the offense that doomed the Pistons in game one of the 2015-16 season, as they lost to the Atlanta Hawks 100-93. Detroit went 1-7 from behind the 3 point line and turned the ball over 15 times, 8 of those belonging to Isaiah Thomas. Thomas had a very good defensive game, with 5 steals, but he only shot 8-21 from the field and turned the ball over 8 teams. Still, though, he led the Pistons in scoring and assists, with 19 and 10 respectively. Only 13 points from the bench (all of which from Richard Hamilton and Andre Drummond) also didn't help. The Pistons' bench was outscored 48-13, with Bob Pettet and Lou Hudson providing 34 of those points for the Hawks. The defense was solid for the Pistons, but if they want to have success this season, they need to be more efficient on offense.

ORLANDO - In the first game of the season, the Orlando Magic debuted a lineup that counters the small ball phenomenon taking over the NBA, with Dwight Howard at power forward and Shaquille O'Neal at center. Tracy McGrady and Penny Hardaway were the starting back court with shooter Hedo Turkoglu at the small forward position. The Wizards kept it close in the first half, but Tracy McGrady and Shaquille O'Neal took over the second half, leading the Magic to the comfortable win. The Wizards aren't one of the better teams in this legends league, so Magic fans and coaches will be paying close attention when they have to go up against a more athletic front court and how Howard and O'Neal match up against them.

NEW ORLEANS - It's a game of runs, and this contest was no exception. The Grizzlies came out on top over the Pelicans 102-93 in a hard-fought battle of two teams going in opposite directions. These two teams figure to be battling for a low seed in the Western Conference. After tonight, the Grizzlies have won 5 in a row and 12 of their last 14, while the Pelicans have now lost 8 of their last 9.
The Grizzlies got out to a 9 point lead at halftime after outscoring the Pelicans by 13 in the second quarter, but the Pelicans made it all right back in the third quarter. New Orleans outscored Memphis by 12 in the third, giving them a 3 point lead heading into the final quarter. In the fourth, however, the Grizzlies came out on top, en route to a 9 point win.
The game was much closer than the scoreboard shows. Marc Gasol was fouled and made both free throws with 40 seconds left to put the Grizzlies up by 4 and they didn't look back from there. Gasol finished with 25 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 blocks. Mike Conley once again netted a double digit assist night, finishing with 15 points and 16 assists in what was one of the more balanced scoring efforts from the Grizzlies.
Note: Brandan Wright made a three pointer in this game. This is the first of his career. His 3 point rating is a 26.

MEMPHIS - The season started off in a rocky way for the Memphis Grizzlies, but they bounced back to beat the Indiana Pacers in their season opener, 109-95. The Pacers dominated the first quarter, outscoring the Grizzlies by 8, due in large part to 9 offensive rebounds. The Grizzlies then took control halfway through the second quarter. They didn't have their first lead until the third quarter, but behind Marc Gasol's 16 points in the third quarter alone, the Grizzlies went from down 2 to up 8. The game was closer than the scoreboard shows, as the Grizzlies were able to get a few easy buckets at the end of the game.
Mike Conley had another great game, scoring 12 points while dishing out 21 assists. Gasol led the way in scoring and rebounds with 28 and 11 in each category. Newcomers Jae Crowder, Jeff Green, and Normal Powell each played big roles and showed that they'll be great fits with this team. Green adds a little bit of everything off the bench, Powell adds scoring off the bench, and Crowder adds versatility and defense to the starting lineup.

SEASON REVIEW
The Memphis Grizzlies finished with a record of 45-37, good for tied for the 5th best record in the West. Due to a tie breaker with the Houston Rockets, however, the Grizzlies got the 6th seed and will be playing the San Antonio Spurs (61-21) in the first round. Overall the regular season went about as was expected, as the Grizzlies were an above average team all year long.

LOS ANGELES - The season opener was a thriller and a roller coaster ride for the Los Angeles Lakers. The Lakers led 24-23 after a tight first quarter, but the San Antonio Spurs outscored Los Angeles by 17 in the second quarter to take a 16 point lead into the break. The Spurs' lead got as high as 20 points in the third quarter, and it looked like the Lakers were all but finished. A strong finish of the third quarter, led by Jeff Teague, cut the deficit to 13 going into the fourth quarter. That's when MVP candidate D'Angelo Russell showed up. Russell had a quiet first three quarters, but he took over the fourth. Russell hit back-to-back threes midway through the fourth to cut the lead from 9 all the way down to 3. From there it was back-and-forth until the Lakers finally broke through and took the lead for good with just under 2 minutes left. The Spurs went to LaMarcus Aldridge down the stretch, and Julius Randle's defense on him in the final 3 minutes was a major reason the Lakers came away with a win tonight. Even though the Lakers showed that it would take some time to work in the new pieces to the team, they also showed just how good this team can be when everything comes together.

Coming into the season, here's how the Los Angeles Lakers depth chart looks. In terms of ratings, everyone up through the 7th man Otto Porter is at least an 80 OVR, with D'Angelo Russell the highest rated player at 90 OVR. The main concern this season will be keeping everyone happy. Usually having high rated players on your bench, like the Lakers do with Jeff Teague and Otto Porter, they tend to complain quite a bit.
