COLLEGE STATION - In what looked like it first would be a blowout, then a potential upset, the Texas A&M Aggies ran away from the Rice Owls 40-21. After Texas A&M got a quick stop, score, and another stop, it looked like the Aggies would blow the Owls out of the water. Rice got right back into the game, though, when A&M QB Kellen Mond threw a pick six to Rice CB Tyrae Thornton. After another score, the Owls ended the 1st quarter up 14-10. This lead wouldn’t last long, though, as Texas A&M would finish the game on a 26-7 run.

Even in a loss, there was a lot to like from the Rice side of the field. From A&M’s standpoint, they’ll need Kellen Mond to throw much more efficiently if they have hopes of an SEC title.

Next game for Rice: @ Northwestern (0-1)

BLOOMINGTON - The Hoosiers suffered their first loss of the season in a disappointing battle against the Kentucky Wildcats. Indiana’s offense moved the ball at will behind the arm of Peyton Ramsey, but shot themselves in the foot too many times. They fumbled 3 times, and Ramsey threw 3 interceptions, including a critical one when the Hoosiers were down 3 midway through the 4th quarter.

The Hoosiers will be off in week 3 before looking to right the ship against the 1-1 Missouri Tigers.

DALLAS - The Portland Trail Blazers pushed past Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks for the 109-96 win in a game that was close early, but a blowout late. The Blazers led by just 1 point at halftime, 53-52, but pulled ahead in the 3rd and early 4th quarters, and by then they comfortably sailed to a 13 point win. Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum once again led the way for Portland, with Lillard scoring 29 points and McCollum adding 26 of his own. One thing of concern for the Blazers is the bench, which ranks 28th in the league in points per game, and added just 23 points in this one. When Lillard and McCollum are able to carry the weight of the offense this isn't a problem, but the lack of scoring off the bench may be an issue to watch as the season progresses.

Up next for the Blazers: vs. Phoenix Suns (9-15)

BREAKING NEWS - The Portland Trail Blazers and Atlanta Hawks struck a deal in swapping young big men, with the Blazers trading Zach Collins and Seth Curry to the Hawks for John Collins and Dewayne Dedmon
Posted on November 29, 2018 at 06:55 PM.

PORTLAND - In a season with a lot of questions for the Portland Trail Blazers, they handled LeBron James and the new look Lakers in game 1 of 82, 117-100. There are a lot of questions about whether or not the Blazers can win with Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum as the two centerpieces, but the duo performed just fine in game 1. Lillard dropped 39 points and 10 assists on the Lakers, while McCollum added 28 points and 7 assists of his own. On the defensive end, Evan Turner did a great job defending LeBron James, as James had just 21 points, 6 assists, and 1 rebound. That defense, coupled with an offense orchestrated by Dame and C.J., led to an easy win for Portland.

All-Star Break Update

The New York Knicks currently sit at 28-31 heading into the All-Star break, 2 games back of the Washington Wizards for the 8th and final spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs and 1 game behind the Charlotte Hornets, who sit in 9th at the break.

The Knicks are being led by Kristaps Porzingis, who scores 23.2 points per game and grabs 7.1 rebounds per game. Tim Hardaway Jr. is second on the team in scoring at 15 per game. As a team, the Knicks have struggled mightily on the defensive end of the floor. They rank 28th in points allowed per game.

Kristaps Porzingis was, unsurprisingly, the only Knick selected to the All-Star game.

NEW YORK - This was a hard fought win for a Knicks team that figures to struggle in 2017-18. The Nuggets dominated the 1st quarter and ended up taking a 6 point lead into the halftime break. After an even 3rd quarter, the Knicks stormed back in the 4th behind a monster night by their unicorn, Kristaps Porzingis. After New York got it to within striking distance, it was a back and forth affair until the end of regulation. With 30 seconds left in the 4th, Porzingis made a pass out of a double team to a cutting Enes Kanter for an easy dunk to tie the game, but Nikola Jokic came back with a dime of his own to Wilson Chandler for a layup to give the Nuggets a 2 point lead with just over 20 seconds left. Coming out of the timeout, though, Porzingis answered with a mid range jumper that tied the game and eventually sent it into overtime. The Knicks handled the Nuggets with ease in overtime, leading to a 115-107 win.

Kristaps Porzingis provided the majority of the scoring for New York, dropping 37 points and dishing 7 assists in the process. He hauled in just 2 rebounds, but Enes Kanter picked up the slack, grabbing 17 boards to go along with 18 huge points, including 10 in the last 3 minutes of regulation and overtime. Rookie Frank Ntilikina did his part as well, providing 14 points and 12 assists while running the offense for most of the game.

The Nuggets were paced by, no surprise, Nikola Jokic. Jokic dropped 26 points and 11 rebounds, along with 5 assists. Paul Milsap provided some scoring with 17 points, but he grabbed just 1 rebound and had just 1 assist to go along with the scoring.

BROOKLYN - The Brooklyn Nets handed the defending champs their second loss of the season in beating the Golden State Warriors 102-99 in a hard-fought game. The Nets led for most of this game, but the Warriors took the lead with just over 40 seconds left when Steph Curry found Jordan Bell beneath the hoop for an easy layup. That put the Warriors up 2, but with just 17 seconds left, Paul George converted a tough and-one to put the Nets back up for good.

Although George didn't shoot the ball well from the field tonight, he was there when the Nets needed him most, scoring the last 9 points for Brooklyn in this one, finishing with 27 for the game. While George was struggling early, it was D'Angelo Russell who controlled the offense and did most of the scoring, dropping 18 points of his own. The other point guard on the Nets added a great spark off the bench, as well. Spencer Dinwiddie made just 2 field goals tonight, but he finished with a big 15 points and 5 assists off the bench. One of the more unsung heroes was rookie Marvin Bagley III. He scored just 11 points, but he added 13 big rebounds and another 6 assists to his total.

For the Warriors, it was the Steph Curry show early and often. Curry finished with a game high 36 points while making 7 of his 13 3 point attempts. Klay Thompson gave Curry a bit of help in the second half, finishing with 16 points, but Kevin Durant was nowhere to be found. Paul George locked him down all night, allowing the former MVP to score just 8 points on only 9 shot attempts.

DETROIT - The Brooklyn Nets got off to a hot start to begin the 2018-19 NBA campaign, beating the Detroit Pistons 100-78. The new and improved Nets led this one from start to finish en route to their first win of the season. The first half was highly competitive, with the Nets leading 50-44 at the break, but it was all Brooklyn after that. After outscoring the Pistons by 9 in the third quarter, they outscored them by another 7 in the fourth to take a commanding 22 point win.

Newcomer Paul George was a big reason the Nets won this one, as he finished with a team-high 24 points. Other notable newcomer Marvin Bagley III had a nice start to his NBA career, finishing with 13 points and 7 rebounds on an efficient 5-9 shooting. For Detroit, Andre Drummond did all he could to keep his team in this game. Drummond finished with 28 points and 16 rebounds, but got little help from anyone else. His other star teammate, Blake Griffin, added just 8 points on a measly 4-14 shooting from the field.

After a few savvy trades in the season, the Brooklyn Nets continued their rebuild by adding some big pieces this offseason.

Signed: SG Will Barton to a 3 year/$32.07 million deal

Within the first 2 weeks of the 2017-18 NBA season, the Brooklyn Nets have already made 2 trades looking to correct the mistakes they've made in recent years. First, they traded the Timofey Mosgov contract and a 2021 2nd round pick to the Dallas Mavericks for Devin Harris in what works as a salary dump for the Nets.

The second deal was trading Jeremy Lin and their 2020 1st round pick to the Atlanta Hawks for Dewayne Dedmon and their 2018 1st round pick.

The next goal for the Nets is offloading the contract of either Allen Crabbe or DeMarre Carroll to free up space to make free agent moves this offseason and next.

All-Star Break Update

The Baltimore Owls have actually played above expectations all season, especially as of late. The Owls go into the All-Star break at an unimpressive 25-34, but for an expansion team in their first season, it's nothing to sneeze at. They currently sit in 11th in the now 16-team Eastern Conference and just 2.5 games behind the Orlando Magic for the 8th and final playoff spot.

The purpose of this season has been to find out who's going to be on the team in a meaningful role next season, and who will be riding the bench or off the team. So far no one has put together a season that has the front office ready to move on. It's been a balanced attack all season, with Josh Richardson leading the team in scoring at just 12.4 points per game. Overall this season has so far been full of development, and hopefully with a few more pieces added in the offseason, they could be a playoff team come next year.

CHARLOTTE - The Baltimore Owls showed everyone they won't be going quietly this season as they took the Charlotte Hornets to double overtime in their first game as a franchise. Ultimately the Owls couldn't pull it out, as the Hornets won 121-114 in game one this season. The Owls jumped out to a quick start but lost their lead going into the half, then got beat bad in the third quarter to get down by as many as 12 points in the fourth. Baltimore came back behind what was a full team effort to take this one to overtime. Josh Richardson had a chance to win it in regulation with a 3 at the buzzer but it rimmed out.

Overtime started strong for the Hornets but finished with Justin Jackson scoring the last 8 points of the period, including a fastbreak dunk with 14 seconds left to tie the game and eventually send it to a second overtime. Charlotte overpowered Baltimore in the second overtime, however, and pulled away for a 7 point victory.

It was a full team effort for the Owls, who had 7 players score in double figures. Josh Richardson led the way in scoring with 22, while Terry Rozier added a double-double of 19 points and 11 assists. For the Hornets it was a two-man show. Kemba Walker scored 36 points, but needed 40 shots to do so. The real killer in this one was Dwight Howard. Howard had a vintage game and finished with 22 points and 26 rebounds, dominating the offensive glass late in the fourth quarter and both overtimes.

Next up for the Owls: @ Denver Nuggets (0-0)
