I don't think the mode is going anywhere. They're trying to capture more casual gamers/fringe baseball fans with all the trading card modes and now Retro Mode which is easier to play and takes less time than a regular game.

They didn't do this only because Griffey is on the cover. They did it because they thought it was a good idea and it made sense to add it this year.

At some point they will have to chill on adding new modes or pare some down, but it doesn't seem like they've reached that point yet.

They may not keep the "retro" presentation but I can see them keeping the simple one button gameplay if the mode shows any popularity.

Same here. Since the inception of MLB Network a few years ago, Matty is now way more popular than he ever was before, so it was great foresight by SECA to add him to The Show when they originally did, and now he's synonymous with The Show imo, so I'm glad he's not going anywhere.

You do know that there has been a one button mode in The Show since '11 right? The added it to help disabled gamers play the game. They have added the "Retro" features this year and I expect them to develop it more in the future. But the base mode has been in the game for a long time.

PS: They may have taken it out in the last year or so. I can't find it in '16

As someone who is working on getting into broadcasting, the commentary side of it anyway let me say that a one man booth is hard to do. At least right now because you havs to do A LOT of talking and I like having someone to bounce off of. Not eveyone can do what Scully does haha! But I'm just getting excited about the game more and more as we get closer to launch. Can't wait to see what the presentation looks like.

Reed is comin' atcha!

^ Over the course of recording for a decade though, it certainly is possible.

That being said, I'm for a two-man booth myself. What they really need though is an algorithm to stitch pretty much any dialogue together like Siri, but without sounding like Siri haha. No, but what I mean is that nothing they say should be specific to an individual, but written so that it can be generated by them given their code. Not an easy thing at all, but that's the end goal for me.

Someday, we may hear the commentators talk about a player who was just traded, chasing a record, divisional standings mid-game, upcoming games on the schedule, where a ball landed on a home run (2K4 had this, it was awesome), hot and cold streaks, speculation on how a manager will play out the rest of the game (or at least who's remaining on the bench)... I mean the list goes on.

As far as repetition goes, I'm getting back into ESPN NFL 2K5, and I'm hearing the same commentary three times in a single game. Not only that, I can even finish their sentences. But I love the commentary there. I don't want to turn it off. It doesn't bug me. Whether it's the enthusiasm, the generality, the connection they have with one another, maybe even the voices themselves... it's all fantastic, even twelve years later. Even the color commentary always referred to the player by his name, instead of giving some sort of "this guy" kind of thing.

I like Matt Vasgersian in real life, but he's not the same guy in the game. Neither were Duane Kuiper and Mike Krukow in the MVP series. If Harold Reynolds is joining the booth, I believe he was also in Triple Play Baseball. I didn't own that game, so I don't know how fluid he sounded, but I believe he can sound very natural on his own, and very analytical (which is a good thing of course). Let's just hope that within that 20 cm stack of papers for recording lines contains Matty V. revisions, and not just additions.

EDIT: I take it back, it was Triple Play 2002 that HR was a commentator in.

I've been playing since 2007 and never knew this.

Thanks for the link. At 49 years old I already notice my reflexes slowing down when gaming. I may need this feature in a few years.

Yes. Network presentation just adds so much as far as immersion for me in a sports game. I play EAs NCAA Basketball to this day because of presenation. The Shows on field game is A+ already so I know I'm in for a treat with 17.

Definately Harold Reynolds since he was on the july 10 livestream playing the game and after he left the next guy on was kirby (the script writer). Hope the other announcer is Shehadi.

Something new and fresh would be nice.
God I hope so. They even have the same post game animation of blue polo guy interviewing players 5 years running now. Hopefully we get sideline reporters and pre/post game stuff now that mlb network is involved and not just a logo osd replacement.

I can see the first set of asterisk spells out MLB Network, but the second set doesn't spell out Harold Reynolds for the March 2nd Twitch

Ramone said on twitter "One should not assume that number of * correlate to letters in a persons name." I'm just guessing Reynolds cuz he seems like a fan considering he did some lines for the easter egg and joined a stream once.

Would love to get a system similar to that Madden thing where commentary got updated as the season went along. But given the season's length, it probably isn't feasible logistically to put that kinda workload on announcers who probably already have their hands full. The NFL season is plenty slow enough and doesn't change all that rapidly.

He might have also said that because of a lot of people saying "O'Dowd" might mean that other characters can come into play that aren't just alphanumeric, such as punctuation marks like apostrophes.

I think I kind of hope it's Harold, but then again I don't ever really recall listening to him in an actual baseball game as opposed to the MLB Tonight studio, and if I did hear him (ESPN 2, LLWS, etc.) I don't know if he was my favorite. I do love him on MLB Tonight, though.

We'll see what we get soon enough!

I still think Matty has some of the best homerun calls in the game, and I hope they amp up his calls a bit this year, especially in the postseason.

His grand slam call in the World Series was one of my favorites:
