NBA 2K14 News Post

Here's some gameplay video posted by Bug (@Weezyy_F_Baby) of the final moments of some first half gameplay between the Thunder and Bulls -- you also get a peak at the halftime show in NBA 2K14 next gen. At one point, you see Derrick Rose being interviewed as he walks off of the court.

What do you guys think?

The halftime interview was a good addition PERIOD! Why is the reaction so ridiculous,"Rose answered a question before going to the locker room.. oh lawd" show me a looses ball situation with the guy your controlling running full speed after it and not jogging. I can't wait to play this (not a port)game. 2k14 for ps3 is really 2k13.5 for a reason. Everything that 2k14 next gen is was supposed to be what current gen received except for park mode. That is why we didn't get the DLC from last year(fake crew mode). We have it for free now in 2k14 called Crews. They made it possible to block shots but that was always possible until the unfinished 2k13 released. They left enough out of 2k13 to put it in 2k14 so we could feel like it is great. #TACTICS We had online leagues. Now we have them again and will be looked at like it is a new mode. I will get the super juiced all new 2k next gen video game because it is my only option( we STILL have no 5 on 5 LIVE). I play 2k and love it and hate it but I refuse to drink the kool aid they serve. I have every copy since the first 2k except for 2k12(worst) so I have experience just not an ultra fanboy.

The rest isn't personal preference. Maybe in regards to whether or not people enjoy this game and this style of gameplay. The way the current physics system works, it prevents the game play from having any fluidity or explosiveness that you see in real life NBA basketball. Everything looks so clunky and unresponsive, as it has for the past few years now.

The possession that starts at 1:34 pretty much sums up 2k basketball as it has stood for some time. Slow rotations, a bunch of running into the invisible defender wall, an easily blocked paint shot and then another block on a jumpshot, that if the passing physics were tuned properly should have been off before Boozer ever ran from all the way across the court and blocked it. This also is because of a larger issue of congested spacing and player size in relation to the court that haven't been resolved for some time and also animations that take way too long such as the gather and catch animations.
i couldn't have said this any better!

A few things:
- zooming out to give you a bird's eye view when coming up court off baseline inbounds
- shifting the camera to offset the dribbler more toward the edge of the screen when standing in the front court (around 35 ft). In the current one, you can't see what any of your teammates are doing unless you stand right by the 3PT line
- zooming in much closer during free throws
- zooming in much closer during fastbreaks. LD2K hates this though so I might pull it back some. Personally, I kind of like it cause it feels a little more visceral. Your vision kind of gets limited when you're in transition, so i was trying to replicate that feeling.

I'm sure I'll be making a few more tweaks after playing with it some more.

So asking for faster pass physics and increasing the speed of gather and catch animations is unrealistic? Wanting guys like Rose and Westbrook to have a noticeable speed advantage, and have that ability to change direction on a dime, like they have the capability of doing is irrational?

The difficulty of the game shouldn't effect the whole logic of defensive strategy and basic fundamental principals. Especially on a team that implores a defensive strategy of stopping all ball entry. I shouldn't have to play against my own team and the AI at the same time. That is a really poor justification.

Mike...this may be an odd request but could you shrink Bosh's head a bit? His head looks big which makes him look less lanky....current gen Bosh looks like Bosh to me compared to his NG version...

Wish they could incorporate more of the omg trailer camera angles for after the halftime whistle instead of that zoomed out view of the arena with players walking into the tunnel like the last few 2ks. In the real nba there's usually a few cameramen on the court following players

but for i would like more control of my player which i can't tell if this game on next gen is like that or not cause i haven't played it, like for the players to act like they have a brain and think like nba players, referees making the right calls..just somethings i would like to be fix or change but i haven't play the next-gen version yet
I definitely understand the players having brains and think like their real life counterparts and referees making the right calls. That's what we all want from our sports games. And of course control, but like you said you can't tell that from a video.

Precisely the reason the community needs to see footage earlier, so that the feedback gets implemented prior to gold certification. The diehards will buy the game regardless; hell, even the nattering nabobs of negativity buy the game inspite of the hate. And finally, the competition couldn't implement what they pilfer even if they tried. Give the people what they want and leave the hype trailers to the casuals.

Not at all man.. just asking for some clarification.

So you overall the game is just slow compared to real life and if they speed things up you would consider that standing out from current gen. I definitely understand you want them to have the their real life physical advantages. Also the difficulty thing is a reality of the gaming programming. They haven't perfect AI yet and thats obvious. How would you suggest setting up the difficulty levels, if you don't change the CPU AI/logic, what do you change?

That's all I was looking for. So does anyone else think the passing and player movement is unrealistically slow compared to NBA?

Not to me personally, but i can understand where he's coming from. On the other end of the spectrum though, what if they sped it up and then it's unrealistically fast and twitchy? There is a fine balance there and I think some people have to realize, this isn't real life and it never will be so no matter how close it ever gets people are always going to find flaws because we're comparing it to real life basketball.

any chance we will see cycle cams again? I liked those. also is it possible to have on option to toggle on the zoom during fast breaks? kinda like the option for zoom in the paint.

ps I like how on certain cams the camera pans out when bringing the ball up in half court sets, then pans in once you cross half court. very nice stuff ive been wanting more of this type of camera work for a while

Even from a cell phone upload the graphics look amazing. The gameplay on the other hand looks sub par. Live 14 really may have a chance to have the better gameplay after watching this clip and gameplay is the most important thing in my opinion, and most others.

It's more than just "speeding things up" tho. If I wanted to do that, I'd jack up the Game Speed slider.

It's a collection of issues that lend themselves to the overall clunkyness this game has possessed for some time now. Again, court spacing, player sizes in relation to court, finer tuned passing and passing animations. Players shouldn't slow down to make passes on fast breaks and players shouldn't slow down to field them. Overall, quicker pass/gather/catch animations in relation to context. Again, that play at the end of the half in that video should have resulted in at least a shot getting off, but because the passing is tuned poorly and catch and shoot animations are so slow, it resulted in Boozer running all the way across the court and jumping before the shooter ever got in the air to get the shot off.

Quick change of direction doesn't exist in 2k basketball either. Everything is calculated and methodical. I never really feel like I have full control of the ball handler and haven't for a while now.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the vid being released has to do with the real player voices part of Eco Motion lol

Couldnt have said it better. Slow direction change, no control over players, slow defensive rotations, player/court/hoop sizing still all off. Improvement over current gen of course but as significant as we expected ... doesnt seem to be.

I see. Thanks for the clarification. I'm still getting into 2k14 and haven't played it much so I will look out for these things as I play and whenever I play the next gen version. Thanks again.

See, and here in lies the problem of what I was mentioning. 2k has always looked more lifelike because of animations, but people complain that you're never fully in control. But that's what happens when you want it to look as close to the real product as possible w/o still looking like a game.
Live on the other hand always has felt like you were in more control, but the trade off is the jerkiness and the lack of smoothness to everything because they want to give you control. It's crazy, but I don't see this changing that much really anytime soon because the majority of people who want to play what they see on tv outnumbers the people who want to play a videogame.

Liked what I saw game wise, but their gameplay really took away from the experience. These are lobby guys I stay away from. But, thanks for showing us the game.
