WWE 13 News Post

As of this afternoon, THQ as a company has been dissolved and all of it's licenses and properties have been auctioned off. We know where several prominent franchises and studios are going but we simply have no idea on where the WWE video games license has found as a home.

What we do know is that a new company will definitely be publishing WWE games starting immediately. The Twitterverse is abuzz with rumors that either of both EA and Take Two have bought the license -- and it would stand to reason that one side of the other is correct. The WWE was owed $45 million from THQ when the company went under, so most likely WWE will be looking for a stable and somewhat wealthier business partner this time around.

The status of a WWE game for 2013 will depend upon how the new publisher approaches WWE video games. If the publisher starts from scratch, there may not be another WWE game on the market for at least a year or two.

Requests for confirmation out of either EA or 2K have been returned with no comments as of this writing. I'll update this space as soon as any real news breaks.

Update #1: A formal court document shows that WWE's license was NOT auctioned off in the sale of THQ's assets. This tends to indicate WWE cancelled their licensing deal with THQ and has shopped or is shopping their property unilaterally.

Update #2: A source from 2K has confirmed that the company will be acquiring the WWE games license. IGN is also reporting this story on their site.

From what I understand the license when back to the wwe and they they negotiated a deal with Take 2.

I'm not sure that's exactly what happened, but its pretty much 99.99999% done.

I'm pleasantly surprised by this one. I have confidence they'll make a really good game.

This is great news! 2k is slowly building their lineup back and I'm hoping that the next news we hear is that NFL 2k football is back!!!!!!

Please be Take Two, I just do not have any faith in EA. Imagine the Infinity engine in the WWE game, guys would get stuck in animations like in Madden.

Ea publishes some good games. Their problem has been tiburon. Their football games have been crap for the longest.

Ea canada developing is hit and miss but it seems the developers they have that are really good are the ones they bought out.

Although I would love to see what Take Two could do with the WWE, if this took any money from a future football game, I would be extremely dissapointed.

Honestly I would think the acquiring of this license is a way to further gain capital for a future football game. THQ should have dissolved a long time ago, but they've been able to limp along for as long as they have because WWE and Saint's Row basically print money.

Fixed that for you. Vince is still a control freak and I'm sure he'll be dictating a lot of the same stuff to 2K that he did THQ. First and foremost being the use of the word Superstar in place of wrestler.

I wouldn't expect a title from them this year, and a bare bones one next year. We shouldn't be expecting NBA 2k13 out of the WWE game anytime soon.

The last WWE game I bought was the first Smackdown vs Raw for the PS2, the one with McMahon on the cover. After that I out-grew wrestling.

But, hearing the news that Take Two acquired the WWE license, I think I might buy the next game. I love Take Two, NBA 2K series is insanely well made, best sports games I've ever played. So I can only imagine that the WWE games are going to be just as good.

Give it a couple years before 2K really make their own game and get the most out of it. But this is great news for WWE fans.

I think Yukes will stay on to help roll out the next two games, until 2K develop their own system.

I really hope 2K gives justice to the attitude era, the war between WCW and WWE and even ECW.

After what THQ did with MX vs ATV Alive I'm glad to see them go. Maybe now someone else can make a proper Motocross/Supercross game.

With Take Two getting it thats just a publisher, Visual Concepts makes the NBA2k game, just like Rockstar makes GTA. Either Yukes will come in under Take Two, or a new publisher will take over. THQ never had anything to do with the making of the WWE games, it was always Yukes.

And what happens to the Wrestlefest game that was in the making for XBLX & PSN?

Yukes made the engine, THQ did everything else.

Dead unless Take Two publishes it. It's a finished product as far as I know though.

Ea created the engine for def jam vendetta and fight for ny. the way they handle madden makes folks lose faith in all the other development teams i guess. i think 2k will make a decent game, but look at fight night and look at prizefighter. ea has the wrestling engine, ill even go as far as to say they will have excellent graphics. 2k would most likely have to build from the ground up. the appeal of instant success may sway the wwe if its not too late. im gonna get it either way most likely.

Aki (now known as syn Sophia, Inc.) did the Def Jam Vendetta and Fight for NY engines, not EA. And they are completely out of the wrestling/fighting game business since their name change.
