WWE 13 News Post

As of this afternoon, THQ as a company has been dissolved and all of it's licenses and properties have been auctioned off. We know where several prominent franchises and studios are going but we simply have no idea on where the WWE video games license has found as a home.

What we do know is that a new company will definitely be publishing WWE games starting immediately. The Twitterverse is abuzz with rumors that either of both EA and Take Two have bought the license -- and it would stand to reason that one side of the other is correct. The WWE was owed $45 million from THQ when the company went under, so most likely WWE will be looking for a stable and somewhat wealthier business partner this time around.

The status of a WWE game for 2013 will depend upon how the new publisher approaches WWE video games. If the publisher starts from scratch, there may not be another WWE game on the market for at least a year or two.

Requests for confirmation out of either EA or 2K have been returned with no comments as of this writing. I'll update this space as soon as any real news breaks.

Update #1: A formal court document shows that WWE's license was NOT auctioned off in the sale of THQ's assets. This tends to indicate WWE cancelled their licensing deal with THQ and has shopped or is shopping their property unilaterally.

Update #2: A source from 2K has confirmed that the company will be acquiring the WWE games license. IGN is also reporting this story on their site.

Pretty good pick up for 2k, if the wwe game can even be half as good as the nba games this could wind up to be a very awesome game

Hopefully 2K will be committed with WWE the way they are with the NBA2K series

I think the biggest plus from this is, obviously nothing confirmed and all hope, an amazing "My Player"-type thing with wrestling. That's all I've ever wanted.

Give us the ability to start in the FCW.. hell, let us start in some made up independent wrestling show and let us earn contracts.

I think EA and 2K would both be able to put out a quality game, that said, I wanted 2K personally because EA already has two games in almost the same genre. Don't need them spread out too much, and it's nice to see 2k get another sports related game that isn't NBA/MLB.

I think the presentation should become pretty damn good, which is a huge problem THQ has had for awhile.

I wouldn't mind having something like that. You have to wrestle a tryout match for NXT(since FCW/NXT merged),and depending on how good you do, determines where you start off in NXT(if you do bad, you start off in non title picture,if you do good, you start in tag title picture, before going to main event of NXT,then moving to main roster)

And then work your way up through WWE(hopefully with so many different branching stuff,so that it's not just like "win us title, then win tag title, then win ic title, then win whc, then win wwe title, and then career is done").

If anyone played NBA2K, you'd see how many diff options there were for interview answers. It was only 4 options, but it was like a diff question every single game. There had to have been hundreds of different possible answers in the game you could have given(and your answers determined if your chemistry went up and all that, so for WWE games, your promo answers determines if you become a bigger face, bigger heel,or continue to stay neutral(which is bad))

As long as they retain the creation suite, I'm more than happy that 2k is picking up the WWE license. The presentation should be top-notch, and the gameplay should be solid as well. Nice to see 2k spread out its game selection.

I hope they let us edit current wrestlers visually. Not just "Superstar Threads" either. Like Punk's hair or Cody's mustache, etc.

Also, I don't know what people are worried about when it comes to 2K servers and WWE. Downloading stuff from the vault will be fine(I never had any issue on NBA 2K when downloading anything from the vault), and playing people in matches won't be anywhere as long as NBA or MLB games. NBA games last like 20-30 mins in online play on average, a WWE match online I can see lasting like 10-15 mins. And there won't be anywhere close to amount of people online in WWE servers compared to NBAs, so it'll mean servers go so much faster

And the servers can't be worse than THQs right?

2k's servers actually aren't that bad. I think they're much better than EA's now, and the amount of people playing WWE will be much lower than NBA. The servers will be fine.

Interesting is the first thing that comes to mind.

I just hope 2k doesn't treat it simply as a fighting game, like THQ did.

now if we have to start all over again.. Say La Ve... untill 2015 lol

There's also the possibility of an online league of sorts.

2K will make by far the best wrestling game ever.

They did make No Mercy, one of the greatest wrestling games ever and the system was more primitive than what we have now.

I'm interested to see if 2k brings the games to PC as well. The modding and customization capabilities would be pretty damn cool.

I never buy PC games, but that would be one I'd actually get for that reason. Sports games, a downloaded roster update usually suffices. With wrestling, too much else can change.

Let's count all the good things 2K could bring to this series:

+ A complete working set of sliders that actually affect gameplay.
+ Multiple camera angles to choose from that are not automatically fixed to one position.
+ Regular stat and roster updates similar to what is provided for the NBA 2K series.

+ VIP profile system that stores user data and creates an AI file for offline play and diverse gameplay strategies.

+ A robust career mode similar to NBA 2K's My Player mode, with GM features, endorsement deals, locker room chemistry, fan support, social media, and stat tracking and building. Also skill acquisition through working with legends, trainers and developmental territory staff. Also post-event backstage interviews and charity functions / milestones like satisfying Make A Wish requests that lead to better positioning on the card.

+ Signature Skills that will differentiate characters and account for intangibles that stats alone do not.

+ Historic modes that celebrate past legends as seen in NBA 2K11 - 2K12, complete with the recreation of significant career moments, similar to the approach taken with the Jordan Challenge.

+ Dynamic commentary that references past events, as NBA 2K13 does.
+ Automatically adding arena effects to music files, as NBA 2K13 does.
+ The ability to create crowd chants, a feature in previous 2K outings.

+ Real arena modeling, like MSG, using some of the same resources already available by virtue of mapping NBA arenas.

+ A rebuilt and more robust General Manager mode (Association anyone?) where you manage your own organization from development to booking shows to increase TV ratings and revenue and try to satisfy the demands of your roster in terms of TV time and card position.

Any other features I've overlooked that should be borrowed or incorporated?

It would be interesting to see a mode like this in the AE. You can choose from WCW, WWF, or ECW and try to be the winner of the war, talent raids, screw jobs/wrestlers taking the belt to another company if unhappy.
