WWE 13 News Post

As of this afternoon, THQ as a company has been dissolved and all of it's licenses and properties have been auctioned off. We know where several prominent franchises and studios are going but we simply have no idea on where the WWE video games license has found as a home.

What we do know is that a new company will definitely be publishing WWE games starting immediately. The Twitterverse is abuzz with rumors that either of both EA and Take Two have bought the license -- and it would stand to reason that one side of the other is correct. The WWE was owed $45 million from THQ when the company went under, so most likely WWE will be looking for a stable and somewhat wealthier business partner this time around.

The status of a WWE game for 2013 will depend upon how the new publisher approaches WWE video games. If the publisher starts from scratch, there may not be another WWE game on the market for at least a year or two.

Requests for confirmation out of either EA or 2K have been returned with no comments as of this writing. I'll update this space as soon as any real news breaks.

Update #1: A formal court document shows that WWE's license was NOT auctioned off in the sale of THQ's assets. This tends to indicate WWE cancelled their licensing deal with THQ and has shopped or is shopping their property unilaterally.

Update #2: A source from 2K has confirmed that the company will be acquiring the WWE games license. IGN is also reporting this story on their site.

I agree, Yukes was good for the New Japan Pro Wrestling series back on PS1 but they have lost their "thing" over the years. Sophia(AKI) should be good if not someone new who is passionate about delivering a great game engine over just shiny graphics.

Like goh pointed out, just because a company over a decade ago was good, doesn't mean they are now. They changed their name, possibly with reason. I doubt anyone who was there is there now. Let's just wait and see who all is involved with this.

look at the games they have, thats a formidable line up if you ask me
Before 2K was putting up record numbers with Michael Jordan, Take Two wasn't doing that well outside of Rockstar's GTA franchise. Things were to the point that they were nearly acquired by Electronic Arts. This was all just prior to the release of GTA IV. GTA, Red Dead, 2K 11, 12, 13, Borderlands have helped Take Two get to where they are now. It wasn't a rumor that they were on the way out, it was actually a fact confirmed by EA and Take Two themselves.

That was pretty cool. Very talented guy whoever made those videos. They were exact replica's of their games.

Funny how EA's version didn't have any gameplay videos.. Probably because it was glitched!

I think this is a good fit. 2K does make some good games though there's always some niggling problem with them (witness the many problems with the 2K baseball games) from my experience. If they can limit those issues than I think this should be a pretty good deal for both sides as WWE will have a pretty good developer and 2k should see its profile rise exponentially with the WWE license.

That Rockstar and EA thing was pretty cool.

I'm not going to lie, I liked that little set-up they had with the menus and presentation on the EA one. I also liked the view during the Rockstar one. It made you feel more in the match.

No kiddin' lol. The EA menu on that looked smooth.

It was FIFA's menu with CM Punk imposed on it. Looked good.

I wonder if this means I'll finally get Wrestle Kingdom III? C'mon, Yukes, do it for me!

It's interesting to see 2K get the license. I knew for sure EA would've scooped it up to rectify their awful WCW games. So many questions as to where 2K will go with this? Who will develop the next game? When is it coming? Man, s--- gettin' real!

My biggest concern is they will let one of there smaller dev teams get a shot and put out a shoddy representation of WWE wrestling.

WWE 13 was one of the worst game I've ever played, and I've been a gamer for a long time. The stupid a.i. refused to use their finishers, always tore apart the announcer table for no reason at all, and of course the 1 count glitch which pissed a lot of people off and it still isn't fixed I think. There was no natural flow to matches, every wrestler had this gameplan: random limb targeting move, counter everything, just stand there like an idiot when their opponent is on the ground, go outside the ring and tear apart the announcer table. I've played most of the smackdown games and no game pissed me off as much as WWE 13.

For years, THQ has gotten away with shoddy graphics, horrible gameplay, glitches and freezes, and yearly slapped on gimmicks instead of improving the gameplay. It was time for a change. Now if 2K can once again make NFL games again, my gaming circle would be complete!

I have a feeling that either Yukes or former members of THQ (Brian Williams or Cory Ledesma) may have some involvement in the first 2K project. They can't go into development with a completely inexperienced team or it maybe a while until we see a quality WWE title.

I think 2K will do a great job making WWE games. 2K should come up with a career mode for the games.

I was completely wrong about this.

I didn't think there was much chance of 2k jumping on the WWE license.

One thing I'm NOT going to do is talk bad about the game (IF they decide to release one this year) because this is their First time EVER developing a WWE game

Can't wait to see if they keep a "Universe" like mode in. I trust Take Two to do a good job with the series, but I hope they don't ignore what few things THQ did right. Universe was one of those things.

At first, it seemed like just a dream scenario, but once you started to think about things(like how WWE license would basically be for sure sold to someone) and that EA Sports got UFC rights already, it seemed like a realistic scenario for 2K wanting WWE.

The whole thing about WWE just taking themselves out of the auction and making the game themselves, sounded like just a business strategy. Meaning if another company found out that even without them, WWE game will still be continuing, it'd put pressure on them to get a deal done.

Well the idea of Universe was cool. The execution? Eh...

I think they can make WWE Universe more User friendly and Deeper than THQ did

I hope we get a "My wrestler" of some sort

2K share will be big for WWE Games

More range of sliders

Gameplay will be Good

etc....etc....
